The Watcher grew worried as he saw what Goblin had done to himself. Seen what the Reverse Flash had done. He sees that a lot of things were unfolding too differently than he foresaw. "The world is collapsing. This timeline is becoming too chaotic to predict. Something is going wrong."
Back down to Earth in STAR Labs, Peter looked over to Cisco as he was tearing apart the cameras he managed to find. All of which Peter managed to locate due to his Spider Senses. His house wasn't bugged due to the same reasons as it seems even Thawne knew if he had them in his home, Peter would find them.
"You know, it's a little creepy that you're keeping those things," Peter commented.
"First rule of engineering, never waste good tech," Cisco tells his friend's brother. "Where's Bobby?"
"Taking a sabbatical with Crystal," Caitlin answered as she made her way inside. "He's still a bit shaken up for killing Chameleon to save you."
"How's he doing now?" Cisco wonders.
"He knows he did the right thing," Caitlin assured him. "But he just needs a few days."
"It's understandable," Barry said as he made his way inside. "Taking a life, intentionally or unintentionally, isn't going to sit well with anyone for a while."
"How about Gobby? Any updates on his whereabouts?" Cisco asks Peter.
"MJ and Harry are helping out in the search," Peter said with a sigh, unsure how he feels about letting his friends put themselves in danger. "Harry is using some resources in OsCorp while MJ is keeping up with anything spotted on social media."
"Is it weird being friends with the son of your sworn enemy?" Barry asks Peter. "I mean, how do you know he's not working worn Norman?"
"Harry wants his dad back," Peter assured his brother. "He will do whatever it takes to bring him home."
"Alright." Barry decided to trust his brother's judgment.
Cisco then got an alert on the computers and looked it over. "Central City Gold Reserve is under attack."
"Gold?" Barry asked. "That's the case Singh wants us on. I'll be right back." He then looked at Peter. "Wanna give me a hand?"
"Sure." Peter shrugged as he didn't have anything going on.
With that, the two of them sped off and made their way toward the gold reserve. Luckily Peter was in his suit, ready to go if he got any alerts on Norman. When they arrived at the scene, they found a lone figure without any weapons and very minimal gear.
"This guy?" Peter asked. "Really?"
"He doesn't look to be much trouble." Barry agreed. "You go high, I go low?"
"Deal," Peter confirmed.
But then when the two of them took a step closer, their ears and even their heads started to ring. Things then started to get worse when suddenly images start emerging in their minds and they see the same happening to the attacker as he just walks off and leaves them alone. As soon as the figure for away, their heads stopped ringing and they were left with the gold, but the attacker escaped.
She flashed her small pen light in each of his eyes. "Your eye movement is normal. No signs of neurological damage."
Barry nodded as he agreed with her diagnosis.
"Do you think the thief might've been a metahuman that put the whammy on you?" Cisco suggested.
"Look, I don't know. When... Rainbow Raider," Caitlin smiled, pleased that he had used her name. "Got in my head, and all I felt was anger. But this was not that. This was just... overwhelming fear."
If Barry had a choice, he would never tell anyone what he had seen inside his own head.
Cisco leaned over his computer, a video from the crime scene playing in front of him. "Huh. Looks like when you went down, the thief got disoriented, too."
"Maybe we... both got whammied." Barry frowned in consideration.
Caitlin turned away from him and their hearts nearly stopped as everyone in the room froze. There, in the doorway, feet away from them, from Barry in his suit, stood none other than Iris West.
"Then you know how it feels," Iris said unhappily.
Peter was checking in with Harry back at OsCorp about any leads. Things have gotten worse for the company and Harry had to take over in the absence of his father. That could mean this is a temporary position or he could be taking over everything soon.
"So, we don't have anything?" Peter asked as he looked over anything that could help them locate Osborn.
"Nothing on the glider tech. No matching signatures similar to the glider. That could mean he isn't using the glider anymore, or it could mean that he changed it to cloak it." Harry was sorry to tell his new friend.
"If he did find a way to cloak it...that could mean bad news for us," Peter commented as the threat of an invincible Goblin is scary enough. But as he was considering the possibility, his senses went off, causing him to look around in confusion. "You said you cleared this office, right?"
"SWAT team cleared it out the other day," Harry confirmed, everyone thinking Norman hid his Goblin stuff here. "Why? Something wrong?"
"My senses are warning me something is wrong," Peter said as he was wondering where it was coming from.
What neither of them knew was that outside the window, there were over several dozens of pumpkin bombs flashing and counting down. Peter finally got down to the location where the alert was coming from and quickly tackled Harry to shield him.
The pumpkin bombs then went off, sending the entire office up in flames. The two managed to survive due to Peter taking most of the explosives and shielding Harry with pieces of furniture.
Peter looked over the destruction as he made it out to the balcony and looked outside to see a figure flying in. He recognized that Goblin skin anywhere when he saw the man coming in, but with no Glider in sight. But then when Norman came into the light, Peter got a look at the now newly upgraded Green Goblin.
After being mutated through a modified serum, he is now monstrous with his skin turned into green scales, with larger pointy eyes, small green goblin ears, a double chin with horns sticking out and yellow eyes without pupils, dragon-like wings, horns, and still had his cargo shorts.
"Norman!" Peter cried in anger, quickly shooting out two strands of webbing and yanking himself into the air. "I was wondering when you'd show your ugly face again!" Then he shoots out a web to grab Norman and pulled him closer to him. "I just never thought it'd be this ugly!"
Norman retaliated by shooting out fire from his fists and his fire was sent toward Peter. The Spider did a flip to dodge the attacks sent by Norman, trying his best not before fried spider.
"It's been so long, Spider!" Goblin cried as he rammed Peter into the wall, holding him by the throat. "Did you miss me?"
"Can't say that I did," Peter said as Norman flew him across the sky. "Ahh!"
Goblin flew after the falling spider before he punched him, sending him flying once again. Peter cried in pain and terror as he flew and slammed into a wall.
"Ow." Peter groaned. "I'm missing Bobby."
"I love to see a spider squirm!" Goblin said as he flew down and there more fire toward Peter.
"Strike one!" Peter said as he dodged the first attack, squirming his way up the wall. Another fireball came flying in and Peter leaped off the wall and landed on another. "Strike two!" Shooting a web and jumping to miss another fireball, he managed to escape. "And I'm out of here!"
With these new power upgrades Norman has, there was no way that Peter could defeat this Goblin in the state he was in. He would need help to take him down. But as he landed down on the rooftop to look around, he noticed that there was no sign of Norman left.
"What?" Peter asks as he looked around to try and find him. "Where'd you go, Norman?" When he looked around and still didn't see any sight of Norman but didn't see anything. This new Goblin was stronger, faster, and more powerful than the old Goblin. "I don't get it. Where are you?"
Just then, there was an explosion out in the distance and Peter figured that was Norman. He quickly leaped and began chasing after the explosion.
That explosion was from the gold reserve truck that was derailed by the attacker. Nothing to do with Norman, but something that Peter could easily take care of. At least that's what he thought.
When they arrived at the scene, Barry was already there and had gotten the first hit in and sent the figure flying into the truck. Peter arrived on the scene and webbed their arms to the side before they had a chance to move.
"Nice move," Barry said as he was happy with how fast it was.
Peter was going to reply when they noticed the figure wasn't down. "Don't congratulate me yet."
They watched as the figure ripped their way out of the truck with the webbing tearing off. Peter was shocked as he took a few steps back, never meeting anyone who can rip their way out of his webbing. Barry went in at full speed, but it was even more shocking to see the figure grab him and slammed Barry into the ice cream truck.
"Okay, maybe we got off on the wrong foot," Peter said as he raised his hands. "Perhaps we can talk-"
Quickly working, he shot out two taser webs at full blast and electrified the figure. But to his shock, they just walked it off and kept going.
"Uh...can we call this even?" Peter asked, trying to think of something.
Joe then shot at the figure, and they were shocked when they watched them raise their hands, using their wrists to block the bullet.
"What the hell?" Joe was even more shocked.
Peter then started to put some of it together and got an idea. "Hold back, Joe." He then quickly leaped into the air and shot out a web and attached it to their back. Then when the figure spun around, Peter leaped in the opposite direction, Turing the figure up.
To their surprise, that seemed to be enough to hold them down. That was a confusing method as the figure was trapped and still managed to break free. Peter then punched the figure and knocked them out before they could escape.
"Okay, now I think we can celebrate," Peter commented as he shook his hand in the air. "Now, let's see who this truly is."
Barry for up and walked over as he undid the armor that the figure, taking off the mask they were wearing along with the suit. Underneath the bodysuit, they found out that it was a woman underneath. A tall and fair-skinned woman with straight waist-length black hair, blue eyes, and broad shoulders. She is sporting a slender and athletic frame with a well-toned yet muscular build.
She wore a strapless red bustier held up by a brace of gold resembling two W's. She has a large golden belt and blue briefs with five white stars on them. She wears red boots with a white stripe on the front side. She also wears silver bracelets around her wrists, red star earrings, and wears a golden diadem with a red star on her forehead. She also has a golden lasso, which hangs from her belt.
"Oh my god..." Peter was shocked when he saw who this was and looked at Barry. "That's Wonder Woman!"
Seemed that tying Wonder Woman up in Peter's webbing was the only way to keep her from using her powers to fight back. So that's how they transported her into the pipeline to keep her from fighting back. Caitlin had to remove a bullet from her shoulder that Joe managed to get in while she was shooting down the men, which she did not react to the entire time.
"What is wrong with her?" Barry asks, getting really uncomfortable with her blankly staring at them.
"I pulled a bullet out of her shoulder," Caitlin tells them and Joe intersects.
"Something like that should hurt like hell," Joe informs them.
"And it didn't even seem like she noticed," Caitlin finished her statement. "I did a complete body scan, and otherwise, Wonder Woman is perfectly healthy."
"I did a quick facial recognition on our guest here," Cisco said as he approached. "Seems our guest's name is Diana Prince."
"Diana, why were you trying to rob the gold reserve?" Joe asks Wonder Woman as she once again says nothing.
"Maybe she's been hypnotized, or something?" Caitlin wonders when Barry approached the glass.
"Diana Prince, do you know who I am?" Barry asks her.
"Flash." Diana finally speaks in a menacing voice.
"How does Wonder Woman know who you are?" Joe asks him and they don't have an answer to that.
"I don't know," Barry admitted as he looked back at Diana. "Wonder-"
"Wonder Woman not here," Diana tells them and that gets them confused.
"Maybe it's a psychotic break presenting itself as dissociative identity disorder," Caitlin suggests and Wonder Woman looks towards Caitlin.
"Caitlin. Good." Diana states and that gets them even more creeped out and confused.
"Oh, thank you?" Caitlin didn't know what to say to that.
"Forget multiple personalities," Cisco commented in fear. "This is a complete possession."
"Yeah, you guys have seen The Exorcist, right?" Harry asks them.
"You and your movies," Joe replies to the two of them.
"Keep talking to her. She seems to respond to you, Barry." Caitlin informs her boyfriend.
"Why is Wonder Woman bad?" Barry asks her.
"Wonder Woman hurt me," Diana tells them, and that seriousness doesn't narrow it down since Wonder Woman probably hurt multiple people breaking the law. "I hurt Wonder Woman."
"Okay, then who are you if you're not Wonder Woman?" Peter asks her, hoping to get an answer.
"I... am...Grodd. Fear...me." Diana tells them and that shocks Caitlin and Cisco since they haven't seen the gorilla since the particle accelerator explosion.
"What's a Grodd?" Peter asks them since he never met him.
Cisco and Caitlin bring them to the cortex and show footage of Grodd in a cage and Caitlin feeding him. Inside a cage was a giant gorilla creature who was taking the food from Caitlin.
"Oh, Grodd is a gorilla." Harry clarifies now getting annoyed at these metahumans. "I'm out. Done."
"He's kinda cute." Mary Jane commented, getting an odd look from Peter. "I have a soft spot for animals."
"Note to self, next date we go to the zoo," Peter tells her.
Mary Jane laughed at that statement. "With your luck, you'll end up fighting the rhinos in the zoo."
"That would be my luck." Peter had to admit she was right.
"Five years ago, Eiling and Wells were working on a project to expand soldiers' cognitive abilities during battle," Cisco explains to them.
"What we didn't realize is that Eiling was trying to create soldiers with psychic abilities." Caitlin finishes his thought.
"What do you mean exactly by psychic?" Joe asks, wanting that clarified.
"Eiling was trying to create these super-soldiers with telepathic and telekinetic capabilities," Catilin explains to the rest of them. "Like Captain America, but with more advanced capabilities."
"But when Dr. Wells found out about the terrible experiments Eiling was doing, he shut down the entire project," Caitlin tells them.
"So, our psycho killer has a soft spot for animals," Peter commented. "Explains Norman."
"What happened to Grodd?" Barry wonders since nobody ever mentioned the gorilla.
"We don't know. After the particle accelerator exploded, we went down to check on him and his cage was empty." Caitlin tells him, never finding out what happened to him."
"So, he could have been affected by the same energy that hit Barry?" Joe asks them.
"When the dark matter hit Grodd, all the drugs and serums that Eiling injected him with could've activated," Cisco tells them and they realize Grodd's now a meta-gorilla. "And we know what happens when an intelligent ape who hates the human race escapes captivity."
"Cisco's right about the first part," Caitlin replies as she types on her computer. "This is the first brain scan that I did on Grodd." She says while pulling up the pictures.
"His primary motor cortex and Broca's area are lit up like a Christmas tree," Barry states seeing the photo.
"All from Eiling's experiments," Caitlin said as she pulled up Diana's brain scans.
"So Grodd and Wonder Woman are connected somehow?" Joe asks them, seriously not liking the thought of a psychic-controlling gorilla.
"What do we think Grodd wants?" Mary Jane asks them.
"I do not like the fact that Wells rescued Grodd," Joe tells them and they agree this has to do with Wells. "And I don't think it's a coincidence that this gorilla shows up at the same time we're looking for Wells."
"Grodd and wells always did have a special bond." Caitlin has to agree it was a good point.
"So, if we find Grodd, we might be able to find Wells. We find Wells-" Joe was saying when he gets interrupted.
"We find Eddie," Iris tells them as she marched into the labs. "And I'm gonna help."
"Know anything about gorillas?" Caitlin asks her.
"I might," Iris said as she pulls up news sightings of a gorilla. "There have been reports of some sort of animal down in the sewers." She explains while they look over it all.
"Alligators," Cisco says and they're confused by the statement. "C.H.U.D.s. R.O.U.S.s. Am I the only one who watches movies around here?"
"A few months ago, two sewer workers went missing. The search party reported hearing strange animal-like noises down in the tunnels." Iris explains to them.
"Looks like we can get in two blocks east of the intersection they went missing," Peter tells them and they start coming up with a plan.
"Okay, I'll go down with Peter, use his senses to help out," Barry said and looked at Peter. "Good?"
"We'll, I've for an octopus, a goblin, a lizard, why not add a monkey?" Peter said sarcastically.
"I'll come with." Joe offered. "I don't feel good sending the two of you alone."
"Wading through a mile of rats, roaches, and human excrement, count me out," Cisco stated when he noticed Joe wasn't having it. "Count me in."
"It's your monkey." Joe scoffed.
They go through the sewers with Joe carrying a flashlight and Peter uses his lenses to see in the dark. They walk to the point and are seriously creeped out since all of them have seen at least one horror movie and this is how they all end.
Back at STAR Labs, Iris was leaning against the wall of Caitlin's lab. It was strange having her there, after so long of having to keep it all a secret. Harry and Mary Jane were hanging out and watching the camera feed, worried for their friend.
"Hey... thanks for listening to me," Iris tells Caitlin.
"Of course," Caitlin assured her with a smile. "For what it's worth: Barry feels terrible about lying to you."
"He should." Frowned Iris. "It wasn't right."
"No." Caitlin tilted her head. "And if I was in your position, I would feel just as angry about all of this as you. But the thing is Iris, I'm not. I can see it from both of your sides. Barry is going through so much right now, and he needs you. He needs his friend."
"He has you." Iris shrugged as she leaned over the table. "That's obviously been enough, lately."
Caitlin smiled as she tried to help her see what she means. "Barry and I are dating, so the rules are a bit different. He needs as many people to have his back as possible right now. He has Peter, but their relationship is a bit... strained right now. And if you are with him, he'll be able to focus so much better on everything else. Like catching Wells and stopping Grodd."
Iris's eyes shifted away. "My life has been... crazy these past few days. Everything has been going wrong."
"I have had times like that, on occasion." Caitlin sighed. "I find it's easier if you talk about it. And if you have friends."
Shaking her head, Iris turned to go. "Thank you for trying Caitlin. I'm just not ready to forgive him yet."
"I know." Caitlin breathed. "Just wanted to say my peace."
Joe places a flare on a pipe wanting a trail to lead them back. Peter was trying to scan through the sewers, but the signal isn't reaching the sewers.
"Give me that banana," Joe says and takes the banana from Cisco. "Stay close."
Peter has his arms out, ready to shoot his webs, knowing they should be strong enough to hold back Grodd for a while. But as he was walking, he accidentally slipped, and his feet fell into the water, and he groaned in disgust.
"After this, I'm putting this suit on super cycle," Peter said in disgust.
"I can't believe I'm down here looking for a supernatural gorilla. I'm terrified of regular gorillas." Joe tells them and they agree with him.
"Hey, guys, you should see this," Cisco tells them and they look to see the writing of the word Grodd everywhere. "Grodd's getting smarter."
"Somebody wanna tell me what we're looking at here?" Joe asks and they see more showing Grodd is getting smarter.
They keep walking and they hear growling from down the tunnel. That got all of them more on edge as they were looking around for the dangers.
"If I hadn't seen Jurassic Park, I wouldn't be nearly as frightened right now," Cisco informs them.
"So, if he's getting smarter, you think he might be getting bigger, too?" Peter asks.
That was a thought that has never occurred to them when they keep hearing growling, and it was getting louder.
It's Grodd.
When they hear the growling coming at them, Barry shot a dart and managed to get a hit in when Peter's senses start going crazy as Grodd comes behind them and throws Barry down the tunnel. This was making even the slightest water droplet unbearable. When the gorilla showed itself for the first time, Joe tries shooting Grodd but doesn't know where he went as he suddenly vanished.
Peter managed to get his mind back as he quickly raced at the giant creature and tried to punch it. But that ends with him quickly getting backhanded and sent flying. Skidding across the water, he is smacked against the wall and groans.
"We have to get out of here," Joe tells Cisco as he's checking on Barry.
"Barry's out cold," Cisco says when Grodd grabs Joe.
"Joe!" Peter and Cisco shout seeing him disappearing with the gorilla.
Peter groans as he was getting his head wrapped by May after earning an injury from the gorilla. She was actually on her way over when she saw the new Goblin attacking him on the news, but was shocked when she showed up for them to return from the sewers.
"We're gonna have to talk if this is something that's going to constantly happen," May comment as she caressed his head. "How does it feel?"
"Like I got punched by a gorilla in the sewer walls." Peter scoffed as he sniffed his suit. "Ugh, this stinks. The pun is intentional."
"I don't remember a time you said a pun that wasn't intended." Mary Jane commented from the doorway.
"I got the results back from your scans," Caitlin said as she walked in with Barry. "You were both experiencing a spike of activity in your primary motor cortex. It's the same thing as what we saw in Diana. The images that Barry was seeing were some kind of psychic attack from Grodd. Peter's mind must have enhanced itself so all it did was give him a headache."
"I think I'd prefer the images," Peter commented.
"Where are we with tracking this monkey?" May asks the group.
"I put a tracker in the tranq that Barry shot Grodd with," Cisco assured them. "As soon as it activates-"
"We can't wait that long," Barry stated. "I'll search every inch of that sewer if I have to."
"And what happens if you find them?" Caitlin asks in worry. "What happens if Grodd takes over your mind like with Wonder Woman?"
"I don't - I mean, can you guys make some kind of tech so he can't get into my head?" Barry asks the team.
Cisco and Caitlin eye one another, wondering about it. "I don't know," Cisco says. "Maybe if Dr. Wells were here."
Iris, who was standing in the corner listening to the whole thing, walked away and Barry chased after his step-sister and friend.
"Guys." Peter quickly got their attention. "We don't need Wells or Thawne or whatever his first name was."
"Eobard." Mary Jane and Harry answered him.
"Gazuntite," Peter replied to that. "Cisco, you created something that saved mine and Barry's life a dozen times without Wells. Caitlin, you've saved my brother's life more times than I can count. We might not have an explanation yet, but you two are the few of the smartest people I know."
"We can look into something," Caitlin assured and the two walked off to find out a way to find out.
"Stay off your feet for at least a half hour," May asked of Peter before getting a call and needing to take it.
"Got it," Peter promises as May left the room.
"So, what do we do?" Harry wonders, not knowing what he and MJ are supposed to do.
"How about talking about the fact your dad has upgraded himself?" Peter said as he eyed Harry.
Harry sighed and knew that was a conversation they were going to need to have. "That isn't something you could find from a drug store. Whatever he did to himself, he had help. Or worse... he has personal labs somewhere."
"What is it with billionaires and their secret labs?" Mary Jane asks them with a sigh. "And why is every villain feel like they've been ripped from a comic book?"
"Well, whatever this is, I don't think Norman has a way to control it. I would even go as far as to say that this is a power boost." Peter started to come up with solutions. "Meaning he'll sooner or later turn back to normal."
"Normal for my dad at least," Harry said as he crossed his arms.
"We just have to wait for him to show back up." Peter guessed, not sure what else they can do.
Turns out Peter was right.
Normal panted and gasped as he looked down at his hand morphing back to normal.
"What the hell?" Norman asks.
"It didn't work!" Goblin snarled as he threw the vial across the room. "It only gave us an energy boost. We only get an energy boost." Then he grew an idea and realized that's all they need. "That's something we can use. A boost. And we can have some fun in the meantime."
"What are you talking about?" Norman asks in fear.
Goblin smiled as he looked towards the mirror. "Let's visit his aunt and girlfriend."
May had just made her way home, tired after a long day and the fear of Peter after his fight with Goblin. She has just walked in the door and placed her bag down on the coffee table as she sighed.
She couldn't believe the hero her nephew was turning into. After all of this time, she never thought that this was where she would be after she agreed to take custody of him with Ben. Now she was raising a superhero who goes out there every day risking his life to save the world.
As she looked on the news and noticed Jameson was ranting about Spider-Man again, she rolled her eyes and changed the channel. Peter always warned May about going home alone, but she hasn't been attacked by anyone from her work, where everyone knows where she works. Not to mention she needed to stop by and pick up some things
But as she was settling in for the night, a small orb was thrown into their home. That caused her to stop and looked just as a pumpkin bomb made contact with the couch. The impact caused an explosion that sent everything up in flames and sent May flying into the kitchen.
"An anti-telepathy strip. It uses magnetic resonance to neutralize any unfamiliar neurological stimulants." Cisco tells them what the device does and hands it to Barry.
"So it will protect Barry from being mind controlled." And Iris was back again!
"That's the hope." Caitlin tried to keep her voice steady, but she was nervous. "But we have no way of actually knowing if works."
"It'll work." Barry looked for confidence then she sounded.
"The tracker just came online!" Cisco called from his computer. Caitlin gave Barry the headset. "We have Grodd's location."
But when they got the news, Peter's phone went off and he saw it was the hospital. "I-I gotta go!"
"What is it?" Mary Jane asks him.
"It's May. Goblin went after her." Peter said as he quickly raced out of the building.
"You need me to go with you?" Barry asked him.
"No. I've got May, you take care of Joe." Peter assured Barry as he ran off with Mary Jane.
Barry decided to trust his brother and flashed away to save his adopted father. They all moved quickly over to the tracker screen and watched Barry's tiny red dot as it dashed through the city. It slowed in the sewer, but only for a little bit.
"What is Barry doing?" Iris asked.
"He's maneuvering Grodd so that he can run through a tunnel 5.3 miles away," Caitlin explained. Her boyfriend was truly a genius. She would have to tell him that later.
"So Barry can do what?"
"Same thing he did to Girder." Cisco looked exceedingly pleased with everything. "Super-sonic punch baby. Hit it!"
Barry shot forward, and Caitlin waited with bated breath. Grodd moved at the last second, and Barry went flying into the subway.
"The supersonic punch failed!" Cisco yelled.
"It's ok, Cisco. The headset's working." Barry told them, and Caitlin sank into a chair, glad that some part of their hastily assembled plan was working out.
"Ok, uh, try some speed punches on him," Cisco suggested.
"Gah!" Barry growled. "This isn't working!"
Caitlin desperately searched for another idea. "Well, what if you tried-" Suddenly, Barry's body scan showed signs of intense squeezing around the neck area. "Oh no."
"Barry!" Cisco yelled. His friends red down smashed, not around, but through a wall, and Caitlin saw that Barry was now lying in the middle of train tracks. "Barry!" Cisco tried again.
"Oh no," Caitlin muttered. "The headset's offline."
They heard the horrible sound of Barry's screams again, and Caitlin gripped her armrests, resisting the urge to either burst into tears, cover her ears, or throw up. "Barry's brain activity is off the charts. This is worse than the last time."
"What's happening?" Iris' voice was hoarse.
"Grodd's attacking him psychically. He's paralyzed."
"Oh no..." Cisco brought up more bad news. "There's a service train coming!"
"Do something, please!" Iris begged.
"I can't stop the train!" Cisco yanked his fingers through his hair.
"Barry, you have to get out of there now." Caitlin was crying, but she wasn't even paying attention.
"What do we do?" Cisco asked.
Caitlin, spur of the moment, leaned forward, towards the mic. "Barry." Her voice was surprisingly calm considering the situation. "Listen to me, okay? You've got to concentrate on my voice. What is happening to you, you have to fight against it. I know you can do this. I know how strong you are." Her heart was racing, and her hands were shaking as they clenched the tabletop. "Stand up to Grodd. You can do this. Please." Her voice broke. "Barry!" She took a deep breath, and then, quieter, but still loud enough for him to hear. "Barry, I love you."
In the sewer, Barry closed his eyes, listening to Caitlin's voice as it surged around him. He saw her in his head, stronger than Grodd. She was in the pipeline, telling him about Ronnie. When they bumped into one another, learning their family already knew one another. Then he was at her apartment and snuggling up next to her. She was kissing him. They sang together on stage. She hugged him while he cried for everything he had lost.
She was Caitlin. And his love for her overpowered any other emotion. Barry quickly got back up and moved away from the train. It came speeding past him as the two of them waited for it to pass.
As soon as it did, Grodd came leaping for a second attack. But Barry saw that coming and quickly moved out of the way as a train came and hit him. Finding Joe was quick enough and bringing him back even faster.
Back with Peter, he raced down the halls of the hospital as he was looking for his aunt. Pushing open the doors down the hall as hard as he could without breaking them, he frantically looked around the halls.
"May?" Peter asked as he saw a few nurses. "Where's May Parker?!
The nurse then gestured to a room down the hall.
"Thank you!" Peter cried as he raced down the hall.
But to his surprise, when he found where May was, all he saw was her sitting up in bed. She was being looked after by a doctor but didn't seem to be as hurt as he thought she was.
"Ah, see, there he is," May said in happiness when she saw him. "Doctor Bromwell, this is my nephew."
Peter however was more confused about the situation as he looked at May and the Doctor. "May? But I..."
"Your aunt was hit by an explosion," Bromwell informed Peter. "Luckily she avoided most of the blast. The house took most of the damage."
Peter sighed as he walked over and hugged May. "That's good to hear."
"We just want to keep her here for a few days to make sure there are no long-lasting effects," Bromwell explains to Peter.
"Thank you." Peter thanked the doctor.
He had a smile on the outside, but on the inside he was angry. Not at himself, but at the man who hurt his aunt. Goblin has now gone too far this time.
Norman was going to pay.
Back in STAR Labs, there was one thing left they had to do.
Barry walked down to the pipeline and opened it up to reveal Wonder Woman, finally free of her mind control. Opening the doors to let her go, he stood out of the way.
"We did a scan of your mind and you're back to normal. Grodd has no control over you anymore, Ms. Prince." Barry reported to her. "You're free to go."
"Thank you, Mr. Allen," Diana said, surprising Barry that she still knows. "Don't worry, I got your name from a friend who knows to keep secrets. Impressive work with the gorilla."
"Yeah, how'd Grodd find you?" Barry was curious to know.
"I was on a mission," Diana explains to him. "General Eiling went missing, and I was sent to find him. I found what was left of him."
Barry remembered the story of Eiling and sighed. "Grodd killed him."
"I have to report his death," Diana tells Barry as she walked off. "We'll be in touch, Mr. Allen."
Barry nodded as she walked off and quickly stopped. "Wait, we?"
Barry was in the treadmill room, and this time, Caitlin and Cisco both went to join him. "Maybe it's a good thing we didn't catch Grodd." Caitlin walked up to him, averting his eyes carefully. "I mean, where would we put him?"
Barry smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "The pipeline isn't exactly equipped to hold a super-giant telepathic gorilla." She sat down next to him on the treadmill.
"Joe mentioned that Grodd called Wells father," Barry said. Caitlin tilted her head, soundlessly asking him where he was going with this. "Wells must have told Grodd to go after us. That's why Grodd didn't kill Joe." He paused. "I think Joe is right- I think everything Grodd did... It was just to distract us."
Cisco remained oddly silent, and Barry looked up at him. "What's wrong? Are you ok?
"I'm just thinking about the headset." He sat down. "It wasn't strong enough. You could have been killed out there, man."
"No, dude, your tech worked." Barry insisted. "And it proved that we don't need Wells. The three of us took on Grodd and rescued Joe. Together we can do anything."
Barry turned to her, and their eyes met for the first time since he had fought Grodd. He smiled at her.
That was all that she needed.
"Actually, it was the six of us," Caitlin remembered Peter and Mary Jane did have a part to play, and Harry did help out as he could before he had to leave.
"True." Barry couldn't forget Peter's contributions. "Speaking of which, I should go and check in with him and May at the hospital."
Caitlin watched as he stood up and got ready to head out. "How about I come with you?"
"I'm okay with that." Barry agreed, knowing that she could be with him when they go.
But little did they know, someone was watching the footage of Grodd vs the Flash in the sewers and was pinpointing where the gorilla could be. He was watching and changed it to one of Spider-Man vs Goblin from earlier the same day.
"You were right," Diana said as she walked up to him. "They are working out of STAR Labs."
"Well, that's one part done." The man said. "What about what you saw?"
"They stopped that gorilla, but he and the Goblin got away," Diana said to him.
"That's a problem for them." He said as he shut down the computer. "We'll let these heroes grow on their own."
"Then what do we do?" Diana wonders.
He then stood up and walked over to the stand where he saw there was an outfit in it. "Keep our eyes on them. They have potential."
"Potential for what?" Diana asks.
Bruce then pulled up a lot of other files that he had put together over time. One was a photo of Iron Man, another of the recently discovered Captain America, a red hourglass, a pink arrowhead, a tiger amulet, and now a lightning bolt, a spider, and a figure of ice.
"The future."
"I'll trust your instincts, Bruce," Diana assured him.
The man then turned around and revealed himself to be the face of Bruce Wayne. He looked over at his Batman suit and knew that these heroes were coming out of the woodwork. Things were only going to turn more and more into madness.
Diana then felt her phone go off and saw it was a familiar number, quickly answered it. "I guess you got my gift?"
In a phone booth back in Central City, a hooded figure looked down at the vial she had created from the chemicals that Diana stole from STAR Labs. She could have gone in herself, but that would have been too much for her.
"Just what I wanted for my birthday." She said as she hid the vial. "Thanks."
"Why didn't you go in and get it yourself? I remember you saying you had connections to STAR Labs." Diana was curious to know.
"It's not the time. They won't trust me after one vague message about where to find their father." She said as she eyed the street, seeing the destruction of May's house. "But I have a personal vendetta now."
"This wasn't personal when you asked for those chemicals," Diana commented. "What changed?"
"The Goblin I'm trying to help hurt someone too close to home." She snarled at the sight of destruction. "Not to mention I have a vendetta against Harrison Wells. Or whoever the hell he is."
She then reached up and caressed her face, revealing to have a burn mark leading up the left side of her neck. On the same side of her face had what looked to be scorched marks just stopping below her eye.
"They're both going to pay for what they did." She proclaimed and hung up the phone.
Walking out of the booth she would call Diana from; she knew that this needed to come to an end. The Reverse Flash wasn't going to take another life or kill the people she cared about.
All she needed to do was inject Norman Osborn with this vial she was given. She saw the news, saw how deadly Norman has become. She knows this needs to end.
