A/N: This will be the last chapter, although there will still be an epilogue. This was such a hard chapter to write! I wanted to keep it accurate as far as firefighter funeral customs and what Gabby would and wouldn't be entitled to since it wasn't a line of duty death, but I also wanted to ensure I did her justice.
The next day was the funeral. Kelly once again put on his dress uniform, going through the motions but feeling so empty and alone. He didn't know how to go on without Gabby. While they'd only been together for five months, it had felt like they'd been together for years. The only thing keeping him going right now was his daughter. She'd been improving every day and would soon be able to come home.
He had no idea how to be a father, much less how to raise a baby on his own. He didn't know how he was going to do it. He wasn't ready for her to come home.
While he was thankful to have a piece of Gabby still with him, their daughter was a reminder of everything that he'd lost. Every time he looked at Allie, he saw Gabby. Allie was also a reminder of why Gabby wasn't here. As hard as he tried not to blame their daughter for Gabby's death, and as guilty as it made him feel, he couldn't help but feel some level of resentment towards Allie.
"Kelly? Are you ready?" Katie asked, standing in the doorway to his and Gabby's room, dressed in a black dress. "Benny's outside waiting for us."
No. he wasn't ready. He would never be ready. He didn't want to bury his beautiful Gabriella in the ground. It would make everything seem so much more real, and he wasn't ready for that. He wasn't ready to admit that Gabby would never walk into the firehouse again, would never hold their daughter, would never look at him in that way she had that made his heart melt and his legs feel weak.
He nodded and followed his sister out of the apartment that had once been filled with so much joy and laughter, first with Shay, then with Gabby, and was now only filled with sorrow, regret, and painful memories. He was silent as he climbed into the passenger seat of Benny's car and remained silent the whole drive to the church.
When they arrived, all members of Station 51 and the Intelligence team were waiting for them. Although it was unconventional for a firefighter's funeral, the Intelligence team would be serving as honorary pallbearers. While Antonio had let Kelly have control over planning the funeral, having the Intelligence team involved had been his one request.
Herrmann, Otis, Casey, Cruz, Capp, and Tony, who had been chosen by Kelly as the official pallbearers, opened the hearse and slowly, carefully pulled Gabby's casket out, the flag of the city of Chicago already draped across it.
Chaplain Orvlosy, whom Kelly had asked to officiate Gabby's funeral, entered first, followed by the Intelligence team. Behind them the pallbearers, led by Chief Boden, carried Gabby's casket into the church. Kelly, Antonio, his parents, Katie, and Benny were next, with the remaining members of Firehouse 51 bringing up the rear.
As they walked down the aisle, they saw pew after pew filled with firefighters, paramedics, and police officers, as well as medical personnel from Chicago Med as well as the other hospitals that Gabby had frequented as a paramedic. It was evident just how many people cared about Gabby.
Chaplain Orlosvky stepped up to the front of the church. "Today we remember and celebrate the life of Firefighter and Paramedic Gabriella Dawson. Gabby, as she was known to her family and friends, was a loyal member of the Chicago Fire Department. She stood forth as a woman, highly regarded by her brother and sister firefighters."
"Let us pray: Holy and Eternal God, help us in sadness and darkness as we remember our fallen comrades. Comfort and strengthen us, as we honor those who have offered selfless service and the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives in response of their duty; and may, we, O God, pray that they have taken their rest from their labors, and have entered into the light of God's eternal rest.
"Holy and Eternal God, we pray for their families, friends, and us. May they, and we, be comforted in our sorrow in the sure confidence of everlasting hope. And, direct us in Thy Great Wisdom , as we remember those who have gone before us. In Thy Matchless and Holy Name we pray. Amen.
"Thank you all for coming today to help us honor the memory of Gabriella Rae Dawson. Those of us who were blessed to know Gabriella Dawson know that she was an amazing paramedic and firefighter. Her compassion and care for the people of this city saved many lives. We will be forever grateful to her for her service to this city. She will be dearly missed by many, including her Firehouse family from Station 51, her boyfriend, Kelly Severide, her brother, Antonio, and her parents. She also leaves behind a daughter, Allison Leslie Severide. While our hearts are hurting today because of her absence, we take comfort in knowing that she is at peace and has been reunited with her friend and former paramedic partner, Leslie Shay."
Mouch stepped up to the front of the church. "A Firefighter's Prayer.
"When I am called to duty, God
Wherever flames may rage
Give me strength to save a life
Whatever be its age.
Let me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
and quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
To give the best in me,
To guard my friend and neighbor
And protect their property.
And, if, according to your will,
While on duty I must answer death's call;
Bless with your protecting hand
My family, one and all."
After Herrmann sat down, Jay Halstead made his way to the front.
"Let the words of the 23rd Psalm give comfort: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want: He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters: He restores my soul. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
When Halstead had to his seat, Chief Boden stepped up to give the eulogy.
"Gabriella Dawson began at Station 51 as a young paramedic. She was an amazing paramedic and quickly worked her way up to Paramedic in Charge. Her care for the people of Chicago saved many lives. She never hesitated, even when her own life was in danger. When she later decided to attend the Fire Academy and became a firefighter, that still held true.
"While Gabby was an amazing paramedic and firefighter, she was so much more than that. At Firehouse 51, we pride ourselves on being a family. Gabby was a sister to everyone at the firehouse. She held her own against some of the house's best pranksters and was always ready and willing to provide a listening ear and a helping hand to those who needed it.
"Gabby was also a friend to many outside of the firehouse. Members of the Chicago PD Intelligence team, of which her brother is a member, were among those that she counted as friends, as were many doctors and nurses from Chicago Med.
"Gabby's death leaves a gaping hole in so many lives, mine included. Over the years that she worked in Firehouse 51, she came to be like a daughter to me. She was dating Squad Lieutenant Kelly Severide, with whom she shares a daughter, was a business partner with firefighters Christopher Herrmann and Brian Zvonecek at Molly's, a sister to Chicago Police Detective Antonio Dawson, and daughter to Ramon and Camila Dawson.
"I'm not sure how we'll go on without Gabby, who was an integral part of so many of our lives, but I do know this: Gabby would want us to go on. She would want us to live our lives to the fullest. She would want us to continue running into burning buildings, rescuing injured people, arresting the criminals of this city. Most of all, she would want us to continue loving each other. She would tell us that the love we have for each other will carry us through."
"Gabriella Dawson, you will forever be missed. I promise you will never be forgotten at Firehouse 51 as long as I am there."
When Boden finished, he had tears staining his cheeks. As he walked by Gabby's coffin, he paused for a moment to rest a hand on it. "Rest in peace, Gabriella."
After Boden returned to his seat, Chaplain Orlosvky gave some closing remarks, and then Deputy District Chief Riddle walked to the front.
"The life of a firefighter is closely associated with the ringing of a bell. As she begins her hours of duty; it was the bell that started it off. Throughout day and night, each alarm is sounded by a bell, that called her to fight fire and to place her life in jeopardy for the good of her fellow man. And when the fire is out and the alarm has come to an end, the bell rings three times to signal the end. And now Gabriella Dawon has completed the task, her duties well done, and the bell rings three times followed by a pause, three times followed by a pause and three times in memory of and in tribute to her life and service."
"Detail, attention" he called. All of the firefighters in the room stood to their feet, standing at attention. "Present arms!" They slowly raised their hands to their head, rendering salute.

"May she rest in peace with her brothers and sisters above."
A/N: Just the epilogue left now.
