"I should really get going now," Uni muttered as she looked at the sky. She ended up spending the whole day and even part of the night with Ultra Noire just messing around. It was strange. Ultra Noire didn't quite feel like 'Noire' but that wasn't a bad thing per se. It just felt like she was seeing a different part of her sister than usual.
"Where did the time go?" Noire seemed to lament as she looked towards the portal. "Don't tell anyone, but this is honestly the most fun I've had in a while." She admitted. "I wouldn't mind if you decide to drop more often in the future. Of course, I'll have to give the guards notification as well."
"I'll definitely visit." Uni smiled. "But you have to promise something as well." The candidate added. "You have to visit me and my Noire sometimes as well."
"Fair enough." Ultra Noire shrugged. "I'm actually quite curious to see how a Big Sister me acts."
"I still can't wrap my head around that," Uni admitted. Ultra Noire had told her about her family which was still a strange concept to Uni. She understood being sisters. She knew what family was like but hearing about Noire's family was such a strange feeling. The idea of Noire being a daughter to someone else, having both a mother and father and grandparents.
It wasn't something she could envision. She tried to picture Noire as a baby in the arms of two a mother and father, but the image never stuck. At the very least there was one concept she was familiar with. Ultra Noire…was a little sister, much like Uni was to Hyper Noire. However, rather than have an older sister, Ultra Noire had a brother…which was also strange for Uni.
"Next time I'll show you pictures…after I sort out the embarrassing ones." Ultra Noire answered.
"I'll hold you to that," Uni said as she transformed into Black Sister. She waved goodbye to Noire before taking off to head back to Hyperdimension. Ultra Noire kept her focus on Uni's fleeting form, her lips curled into a sad smile, until Uni disappeared completely from her view.
"Alone again." Ultra Noire thought as she turned and walked back inside. She went and showered, changing into her pajamas. Afterward, she went and hand-washed her 'Noire Lastation' jersey before drying it with her powers. Finally, she folded it and went to put it away in the closet.
Opening her closet, Noire reached and pulled out a simple black chest that was hidden in the back. Upon opening the box, she was greeted by familiar items. An old gaming console, a recipe book, a pair of swords, four other jerseys neatly folded, and finally a photo album.
Noire took the first jersey on the pile the smallest of the set. It was baby-sized. Unfolding the jersey, she looked at the name. It read 'Uni Lastation'. Her vision soon became a little fuzzy as water started to fill her eyes. A few words drifted back into her mind from her previous conversation.
"Perhaps an Ultra Uni will be born sometime in the future." She recalled telling the candidate. It was…a half-truth. Perhaps a girl named Uni would be born in the future, one that would be similar to the candidate. It was possible after all that such a thing could happen.
"But she wouldn't be my sister." Noire thought as she looked at the jersey.
"Am I really going to be a big sister, Mom? Daddy wasn't lying like when he said he'd get me a pony right?" Noire asked as she sat by the table.
"Hey…I never said I wouldn't get you one, I just said I needed to find one without wings first." Her father had protested. "Maybe if someone decided to help me hunt monsters instead of play games all day, I would find it sooner." He joked as he glanced to his right.
"Don't bring me into this old man. You promised her, you deliver. Besides, I'm trying to make a game, not just play. There is a difference." Her brother shot back. "Besides I already promised I'd help her take of it." He then smirked. "Or would you rather we switch jobs."
"Never mind." Her father huffed. "I'll see about looking for one the next time I'm doing work for the Guild."
"Now dear, don't be so worried. I'm sure when little Eunice is born, Noire won't even have time for a pony." Her mother smiled.
"What kind of name is Eunice?" Her brother remarked. "That sounds silly."
"Really, but I thought it sounded so lovely."
"I thought we agreed to never let the old man name anything ever again."
"Hey, I'll have you know the names I pick are top-notch." The old man argued. "And stop calling me old man, I'm only in my forty."
"But forty is old Papa." Noire laughed before turning to her brother. "And you are bad with names." She added.
"That's not true."
"But big brother said Grandma was ready to use her thorny sword if you named me."
"Actually, it's Tornado Sword." Her brother corrected.
"That's not true. Your grandmother, rest her soul, thought it would be best if your mother named you since I already named your brother and I happened to agree with her after we talked." Father admitted though from the way his cheeks were flushed the two kids could tell he was embarrassed and lying to save himself.
"Papa is a liar." Noire deadpanned.
"Without a doubt." Her brother agreed.
"Alright wise guy if you are so good at naming how about you pick your sister's name." Their father challenged them. Noire turned to stare at her brother who seemed to ponder the idea. She could have sworn she heard the gears begin to click in his head he thought of something. It was probably going to be something weird.
"I got nothing." He said without shame.
"Not so easy, is it?"
"I at least admit my failures." Her brother answered. "What about you Noire? What do you think our sister should be called?" He questioned.
Not wanting to be put in the same boat as these two hopeless fools, Noire thought about a name to give her little sister. Eunice wasn't the worse name, but Noire thought it could be a little shorter. "How about…Uni." Noire answered.
"That's…not bad." Her brother admitted. "Looks like you got more than just your good looks from mom." He teased.
"And you got yours from dad." Noire retorted.
"Hey...I'm much better looking than dad."
"I'm right here you two."
"Relax dear, the kids are only joking. How else would I have such beautiful daughters and a dashing son if it weren't for you?" She questioned.
"You're pretty beautiful yourself." Their father told their mother as he hugged her.
"I'm gonna hurl." Her brother groaned.
"Papa and Mama are flirting," Noire added. The two parents soon pulled away in embarrassment at being seen by their children.
"We are not." They both answered. There was an awkward silence among the four of them before her brother coughed.
"Okay, dinner's getting cold. So, let's eat." Her brother tried to change the subject.
"But I have one more question," Noire told them.
"Alright spill."
"Where is Uni coming from?" Noire asked. The other trio members of her family blinked at her as she looked at them expected. It was her brother who once again broke the silence.
"Well, you see Noire, when a mommy and daddy love each other very very much they…"
That conversation was never finished as their dad brought out his own sword which became rainbow colored before chasing after her brother, who managed to grab his own sword and engage with his father. While the two guys duked it out, Noire and her mother looked on while eating cookies. Her mother promised to tell her and Uni it later when they were older.
"Those were the days," Noire thought as she put the jersey back. She had saved up for weeks to have them custom-made. Her present for when Uni finally escaped Mom's belly, except Uni never did.
"Is this the Lastation resident?" An officer asked. Noire had been watching them from by the stairs as her brother talked to them.
"Yes. Is something wrong?" Her brother questioned.
"I'm afraid there was an accident on the freeway." The office said. The conversation trailed off but soon it became clear. Her parents had gone to the doctor for Uni's arrival. They never made it.
That night Noire found her brother crying. She hadn't known at the time what had happened just that they weren't coming home ever again. He didn't say much to her, but Noire had known what she needed to do. She hugged her brother tightly that night and the two slept in each other's arms.
It had only gotten worse from there. They lost their house and left them with only the clothes on their back. The two didn't have other relatives to turn to so with nothing else left they started to wander the world looking for a place to call their own.
"Are we going to be, okay?" Noire asked.
"Don't worry Noire. I'll take care of you." Her brother smiled. "We don't need to stay where we aren't wanted. If this nation doesn't want us, then fine, we'll go and find another one. I hear there's a one-off the coast in the South." He told her.
"Don't bother." Noire had told him. "We don't need any nation. We'll just make our own instead."
"That's a pretty tall order little sister. You need to be a Goddess to do that." He warned her.
"So. I'll become one and then we'll have a home," Noire told him.
"We have a home," Noire repeated as she closed the box. She put it all away as she went to prepare for tomorrow. She had a lot of work to do later. She had her home to take off after all.
Lying on her bed Noire let her mind wander with thoughts of her family both old and new. Perhaps she'd be able to dream tonight. That sounded nice. A dream with all of them together what a dream that would be.
Meanwhile in Hyper Dimension…..
Uni arrived in Lastation a little before Midnight. Once she had reached home, she found herself frowning at the sight before her. Noire, Hyper Noire, had been fast asleep at her desk. The candidate sighed as she walked over to her sister's sleeping figure. It was nothing new, Noire always worked herself to the point of exhaustion, but Uni had thought she'd learn her lesson and stop after it started making her feel sick sometimes.
"Why are you like this?" Uni asked herself as she took care to lift up Noire. She carried her sister back to her bedroom before gently resting her on the bed, taking care to remove her sister's shoes and accessories. Once Uni was sure Noire was comfortable turned to leave, only to stop midway. Uni turned back to her sister. Being extra careful she covered her sister with the blankets before kissing Noire on the forehead. "I love you, sis." She whispered as she left.
"I love you too Uni," Noire spoke in a drowsy state as she turned with the covers on her.
"Alright now let's see what we have left." Uni thought as she looked at the papers remaining. For the most part, Noire had finished the bulk of it, so it only seemed fair that she does the rest. As she cleared up the workspace the Candidate found a sticky note on her sister's PC, a reminder.
Thinking nothing of it, Uni merely read it expecting it to be another meeting or something. She was pleasantly surprised it wasn't. Instead of being something like an appointment or a meeting, it was for a party, a birthday party to be exact, Uni's birthday party.
"Uh, wait a second, but my birthday isn't till…" Uni checked the calendar and to her surprise, her birthday was…tomorrow. "How did I forget that?" Uni wondered. It was kind of embarrassing forgetting your birthday but on the bright side, her sister clearly did remember her at least.
"What are the odds?" She wondered. Her Noire had been trying to finish all the work so they could spend time tomorrow on her birthday, meanwhile, Uni had spent today with Ultra Noire. Perhaps if she had known in advance, she could have told Ultra Noire to push the day off till tomorrow. It would have been nice having both of her sisters present after all.
"Maybe I'll call her in the morning." Uni thought as she finished up the rest of things. There was nothing better than spending time with family after all.
