The moment Lunar retreated into the mindscape, he immediately regretted it. Or was it going into the mindscape he regretted, or something else? He'd been bored. Eclipse was working on something and refused to do anything with him, and he had played every arcade machine who knows how many times now. He'd normally bug Eclipse until he stopped working, but his brother had gotten even more moody lately. What used to only be harsh words was now a little more than that.
Wait, what was he thinking about again? OH, yeah. Entering the mindscape. Lunar wasn't even sure if that was something he could do after the spell; he didn't know if it was possible for both personalities or souls or whatever you wanted to call them to reside there with no one controlling the body. Speaking of which, what did the body look like now? It probably looked creepy, just sitting there not doing anything.
Oh boy, Lunar had gotten sidetracked again, hadn't he? That'd been happening a lot lately. More than usual, anyway.
The point is, lunar was bored so he decided to see if moon wanted to talk or hang out or something. Of course that was unlikely since Moon didn't really like Lunar that much (for understandable reasons) but it was worth a try, right? Moon was grumpy, but not nearly as much as Eclipse was, and lunar thought he was a good person. He wouldn't mind spending time with Moon if he let him; he'd actually like that a lot.
But now he was regretting that decision. Not because Moon was mean or rejected him or whatever; it was because of anything Moon did, but actually kinda the opposite?
Moon didn't look good. He looked quite awful, actually. Even though animatronic faceplates aren't as expressive as, say, humans, Lunar could still tell that moon was in a lot of pain. So much so that he didn't even notice Lunar was there.
It was one thing to be told Moon was hurting. Eclipse had told Lunar about what he had done to Moon, of course. He seemed very proud of himself for it. But seeing it firsthand was a lot different from knowing about it. Even without seeing it, Lunar had tried to help; he did his best not to move too much. But he was a very movie person, he couldn't not move. But it hadn't been enough, of course it wasn't enough. He was never enough. So moon was still in pain, still hurting, and lunar couldn't do anything about it.
He should be okay with that. It's what Eclipse wants, so it should be what he wants. But he doesn't—he doesn't want this, and he doesn't know why!
Oh wait, how long was he just standing here? He'd been here for a while. That's creepy, isn't it? Good thing Moon hasn't noticed him yet. Or was it? The whole point of coming here was to talk to Moon, but should he? This was a bad time, wasn't it? Okay, he's just going to go for it.
"Moon?"
Lunar's voice comes out softer than he'd planned, softer than it's ever come out before, probably. Still, it's enough to get Moon's attention, and his head shoots up. If he was a human, a movement like that would've likely broke his neck. His harsh red gaze locks with lunar's.
"Lunar," Moon rasps. It was probably meant to be scary, but it mostly just sounded pained. The hiss he let out afterwords further sunk in that impression. "What do you want?"
Moon felt hopeless. It wasn't a feeling he was familiar with; before this, he had always had a plan. Always had a goal. But now he was trapped in his mind, his brother was the same, and he was in the worst pain he had ever been in. And to think, this was the same agony he had unknowingly (at least not to this extent) subjected Sun to not too long ago. Guilt, pain, and hopelessness. That's his life now. And it's great.
He thought he felt a presence in here with him, but he chalked it up to being delirious with pain. That is, until said presence spoke up. Moon knew that voice.
Lunar stood there in front of him, looking as absentminded as usual. "I just wanna talk," he replied, completely oblivious to how truly unwelcome his little visit was.
Moon groaned, trying his best to disguise it as irritation instead of the pained focalization it truly was. "Whatever Eclipse wants from me, I. Won't.—"
"Eclipse didn't make me come here." Lunar cuts his beginning of a rant off, in the matter-of-fact, cheery way that only he could pull off.
Moon froze, taken aback. As much as he loathed to admit it, this surprised him. As far as he knew, this was the very first time he had seen Lunar do anything not Eclipse related. Well, anything big like this, anyway.
"Then, why are you here?" Moon grumbled, tensing his jaw as a fresh wave of pain rolled over him.
Moon was silent for a significant amount of time, staring into moon's soul with that expression of his that frustrated him to no end. Then he finally spoke. "If you want me to go, I will. I understand. It's fine, it's cool, I don't care. Just say the word and—"
"NO!" In a burst of anger, Moon forced himself to stand upright, taking a few steps forward. "No, you don't get to do this, lunar!" If Moon had a heart, he was sure it'd be pounding in his ears right now. Presently, his simulated breathing was going nuts, making him sound like some crazed animal. 'Now, tell. Me. Why. YOu're. Here!"
Lunar took a step back, seeming to shrink in on himself, and… was that a flash of fear in his eyes? Moon's anger was suddenly gone as his vision shifted, and instead of Lunar standing in front of him, it was Sun. His energetic and annoying but kind and empathetic brother, who he was baring down on, threatening him. Hurting him.
Moon felt a pang in his chest, different from the pain that had plagued him for the past while. Worse. "Br—"
His vision glitched again, and he shook himself. What was he doing? Okay, he was definitely out of his mind. That isn't Sun, it's Lunar. Still, Moon can't help but notice how small he looks at the moment, how young and fragile. He used to fantasize about this, tearing both Lunar and Eclipse apart for what they'd done, but the reality was far different.
"I-it's like I said before, I just wanna talk. But I'll leave, if that's what you want."
Moon lets out a long sigh. He wants to be angry again, it would be a lot easier than whatever this is. But he can't seem to stoke the fire that burned within him only a few seconds ago. "And… Eclipse didn't put you up to this?"
"Nope~" And lunar has seemingly bounced back to his usual bubbly self. Moon never thought he'd see the day that this would make him feel relieved.
"Okay, ya know what? Sure. Maybe you being in here will make it stop hurting so much."
"Maybe!" Lunar plops himself down, a bit too close to Moon for his liking. He doesn't have the energy to reprimand him, so just sits down as well. "So." He begins, still in disbelief that he's actually doing this. "Are you and Eclipse," it takes more effort than Moon would like to admit to say hisname in a neutral tone. "Are you playing games together?"
"Yeah, we are. Eclipse is always so grumpy about it, though. I don't think he actually wants to play."
Okay, at this point, Moon is going to lose track of how many times Lunar has surprised him today. Never in a million years would he have thought lunar able to pick up on something like that. Maybe he's smarter than he's letting on? Now that is a scary thought.
"I'm not surprised," Moon replies, matter-of-fact. "He probably just wants to focus on his plan, but can't because he'll risk losing the support of the fans."
"Yeah, he does. He barely even talks to me anymore. He's the only one I'm allowed to talk to, so it's been really boring."
"He won't let you talk to any of the others?"
"Not unless he's there, and I pretend to be you. He says they'll get me if they know about me, but I don't think that's true."
Yes, Moon is definitely losing count, and probably about to blue screen, too. He has half a mind to ask lunar if that's the only thing Eclipse has told him that he doesn't think is true, but ultimately decides not to push his luck. Especially when a fresh wave of pain flares up. "Aargh!" He cries out, unable to stop himself. "It hurts, it hurts!"
"Maaan, I was hoping I could've kept it from being so bad."
Before today, Moon didn't think it was possible to feel shock at the same time as agony. "What…"
"I know you feel pain every time you move, Eclipse told me. I've tried not to move too much, but I-I move a lot. Not much I can do about that."
"But you… why—"
Suddenly there were harsh sounds filling the air, and the entire mindscape itself seemed to crumble. "I can't stay here anymore." Lunar, that was Lunar. But he sounded staticky and far away. "I'm sorry. Maybe we can do this again sometime. Would you like that? I would like that."
It's strange, but as Lunar faded away, Moon could've sworn he heard his counterpart say something else. Something like: "I wish you were my brother." But that would be ridiculous. For all he knew, the whole scenario could've been a delusion caused by pain and isolation. Was he crazy for hoping it happened again?
A/N: So yeah, this thing I wrote. I don't know if the characterizations are right or not for sure, but I think it's cute and sad, and I wanted to share it with you guys. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing it.
