Fossil Fools

After Serena's unfortunate loss at the Olivine City contest in Johto, our heroes are now on a ferry heading towards Galar for Ash's next Frontier Battle. Ash was sparring with Kabu against Gary's Blastoise while Serena was practicing some contest moves while Oliver, the news addition to the girl's team, lookedout at the horizon, only seing nothing but water as Aiden approached.

Aiden: So, you're this "Oshawott" I've heard about?

Oliver: Huh? Oh, uh… Yeah. I'm Oliver.

Aiden: *nods* I'm Aiden. So…. You're also an abandoned?

Oliver: Uh… *saddened* Yeah. My old trainer, Evelyn…. She doesn't really like me. She only got me because I was the only one left at the lab in Unova. But I lost the contest we entered in and I caused her to lose and after… She just dumped me and called me ugly.

Aiden: Damn, that's horrible. I'm sorry about that. But…. If it's any consolation, you're not alone.

Oliver: Huh?

Aiden: Back when I was a Charmander, I had this jerk of a trainer named Damian. I wasn;t that strong back then and he left me on a rock, promising he'd come back. I nearly died out there, but then… Ash saved me and brought me to the Center. And when I was there, I learned Damian was a real jerk, so I went with Ash. *smiles* And I don;t regret a second of it.

Oliver: Woah….

Aiden: The point is that don;t give up hope. You'e gonna be great with Serena as your trainer, like how I am with Ash. You understand?

Oliver: …I do. Thanks a lot.

Aiden: Don;t mention it.

Loudspeaker: Attention passengers, this is your captain speaking! We will be arriving at the Hulbury port in exactly 2 hours! I repeat, we will be arriving at the Hulbury port in exactly 2 hours!

Gary: Hey, he's right! Look over the horizon!

As the battle tension ceased, the group looked over the efront of the boat to see a rapidly approaching continent, which also seemed to have a stadium incoming. With this information, bth Ash and Gary recalled their bigger Pokemon as they and Serena retreated to their rooms to get their things.

Later on, the ship stops as passengers get off, where Ash, Serena, Gary, Cobalt, and Green reach the port and walk into Hulbury, which seems to be a small wharf town.

Serena: So this is Galar. I have to be honest, this is the first time I've ever heard of this region.

Gary: Hey, Ash. Aren;t Inteleon native to Galar?

Ash: Oh yeah, you're right. We're pretty much in Azula's ancestral home. That's pretty cool.

Cobalt: Hey, look over there!

Ash follows Cobalt's paw as he looks to see something crawling out of the water. The Pokemon seemed to resemble a Slowpoke, however it's skin was a different shade of pik, its tail didn;t curl, and a yellow stripe extended from its back starting from its forehead.

Ash: A Slowpoke!

Gary: Yeah, but… *takes out Pokedex* It looks kinda weird.

Pokedex: Slowpoke, the Dopey Pokémon. A Psychic type. Slowpoke facial expressions are normally spacey, but sometimes, they appear focused. Because they eat Galarica seeds, their tails have a spicy flavor.

Gary: What? That can;t be right.

Serena: Why not?

Ash: Slowpoke are supposed to be Psychic AND WATER types, but this one is pure Psychic.

Pokedex: Ths is the Galarian form of Slowpoke. Even among the same species of Pokemon, there is the possibility of different aspects between them depending on where they live or where they are raised. These differences are called "Regional Variants".

Green: Woah. There can be differences between the same Pokemon defending on where they live? That's so cool!

Ash: Yeah, it is, huh? But we shouldn't waste time here. Come on, I think I see the train station.

—-

Later on, Ash and his friends are seen riding on a train that's leaving a large city called Motostoke, which is one of the region's capital cities besides Hammerlocke. As they rode the rein, Serena looked outside, looking upon a wiide open plain that seemed to stretch on forever as multiple Pokemon dwelled out in the open.

Serena: Wow, look at all the Pokemon!

Ash is seen looking out the window with the girl, while Cobalt and Green lounge back, with Gary reading a travel pamphlet.

Gary: Says here what we're passing by is called the Wild Area.

Ash: Wild Area?

Gary: Basically, it's a huge area full of Pokemon that connects most of Galar together. Think of it like Gramps's corral, but for an entire region.

Cobalt: Amazing. And all we need to do is ride the train to the stop of our next Frontier Battle… Where's that again?

Green: Stow-On-Side. It's called Stow-On-Side.

Cobalt: Gotcha. You know, besides a good old hike, traveling by train has to be my favorite way to go around.

Serena: Same here. I love the train.

As they spoke, a worker came by pushing a cart, where she then took a small basket filled with small baked goods within.

Worker: Complimentary scones?

Ash: Oh, yes. Thank you.

The woman nodded as she sets the basket down and keeps moving, where the boy takes a scone and eats it.

Ash: Delicious. Not as good as Brock's, but still good.

Serena: Who's Brock?

Cobalt: Well-

Suddenly, the train starts to slow down, much to the confusion of our heroes.

Green: Huh?

Gary: Why are we stopping?

PA: Attention passengers, due to a small herd of Mudbray passing by, we are forced to stop as to avoid any injury. As we may be stopped for a while, several car doors will be opened. Feel free to step outside if you wish.

And just like that, the train completely halted as the doors outside became unlocked.

Green: Aw, what?! This is Tauros-crap!

Cobalt: Relax, Green. I'm sure it's nothing too serious.

Gary: Hey, Serena. How far is this "Stow-On-Side" place from here?

Serena: *takes out Poke-Nav* Actually, not too far. We just need to head noth towards that massive bridge.

Gary: So, if that's the case, maybe it'll be easier for us to just walk there?

Ash: *opens window* Maybe, but I don;t know-

Suddenly, a small gray squirrel-like Pokemon hops in through the window and starts eating one of the scones Cobalt was gonna get. Shocked at the new Pokemon, Ash scanned it.

Pokedex: Skwovet, the Cheeky Pokémon. A Normal type. Skwovet keeps Berries in its cheeks, but if its stomach is already full, it can temporarily store food in the tufts of fur on its tail.

Cobalt: *growls* Why, you little…!

The Lucario then proceeds to try and punch the Skwovet, only for it to stuff two more scones into its cheeks before hopping out the window and running off. This only elicits Cobalt to jump out the window and run after it

Cobalt: HEY! Come back here with those scones or at least an apology!

Ash: Cobalt, come back here!

Serena: Well, at least he's going the right way…

Green: Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go!

As such, the rest of the group went out through the door as they followed Cobalt into the Wild Area as he chased after the Cheeky Pokemon. However, Cobalt finally stopped as he crossed under a bridge, coming upon a small crag as he sighed in disappointment as the others caught up.

Cobalt: It got away….

Ash: Don;t worry, Cobalt. I promise we'll get you some more scones before we leave for the next region. Now, how about we head off to the Battle Arena?

Cobalt: *sighs* Okay….

As they walked forward through the crag, a voice seemed to call out from off-screen.

?: Now, Mudsdale! High Horsepower!

Suddenly, a huge crash is heard as large pieces of rock are sent flying towards them, causing Serena to yell out and attempt to shield herself as many wre falling in her direction.

Ash: Serena! Cobalt, use Force Palm! And Green, use Leaf Blade!

Gary: *throws Pokeball* Jolteon, Double Kick!

All three Pokemon rushed forth, destroying the rocks that came towards the girl as she then uncurled and looks towards them.

Jolteon: Are you okay?

Serena: I…. Yes. Thank you.

The group then turned to the source of the voice, finding a man with ruffled up dark gray hair, a lab coat, and smudged glasses stood by with a large brown horse Pokemon with a black and orange mane. Confused, Serena scanned the equine with her Pokedex.

Pokedex: Mudsdale, the Draft Horse Pokémon. A Ground type. Mudsdale's heavy, mud-covered kicks are its best means of attack, and it can reduce large trucks to scrap without breaking a sweat. It remains calm and unmoving no matter the situation.

Man: I didn;t realize there were others here. My bad.

Gary: What do you mean, "My bad"?! You could've seriously hurt my friend!

Ash: You're wearing a lab coat… Just who are you anyway?

Man: Bray Zenn. I'm a fossil digger. And judging by your lack of tools, you're not here for fossils, huh?

Gary: Uh…. No.

Cobalt: This guy creeps me out.

Green: Oh, really? What gave it away?

Bray: Well…. *looks around* You guys wanna see some fossils from Galar?

Gary was still angry, but he had to admit; Fossil Pokemon truly did interest him and these were Pokemon from a new region. Sensing his friend's curiosity, Ash answered for him.

Ash: Okay.

Srena: Sure.

Bray: Right. *turns around* Over here…

The digger then led the group down a little bit as he recalled Mudsdale. After walking for a quick minute, Ash and his friends stumbled up a series of four skeletons that seemed to be almost dug up. These skeletons happened to be an upside-down jawed head and fins, a pelvis with a plaited tail, a top half with a beaked skull, and what seemed to be part of a fish skeleton.

Green: Woah. Now THESE are some crazy fossils.

Gary: Are those hands?... Or fins?

Serena: Is this supposed to be a tail?

Bray: That's the thing, we don;t know. These aren;t even the Pokemon's complete skeletons. *picks up pickaxe* If we keep digging, we're sure to find the whole thing.

?: There you go, skimming the details again.

Bothered, the man turned around, showing a woman arriving onto the scene, She hd a black bowlcut on her head and a smudged face, she too had a lab coat on and she heaved a heavy backpack on her back.

Bray: Okay. Why are you late now?

?: It always seems to happen when I set my alarm clock.

Cobalt: Wow. Talk about ironic, huh?

Ash: *playfully punches Cobalt's arm* Oh, shut up.

Bray: Constantly careless, as always.

Gary: Who's she?

Bray: My research partner and fiance, Cara Liss.

Serena: Oh, congratulations!

Cara: Thank you.

Bray: Well, now that you're here, let's get to work.

The woman nodded and set down her backpack to root through it… Only to stop and look around awkwardly.

Bray: You forgot your pick again, didn;t you?

Cara: *chuckles nervously*

Bray: *sighs* So careless….

Ash: Uh, hey. I know you don;t know us, but would it be okay if we helped? We do have some time before we need to go to Stow-On-Side.

Gary: Plus, I kinda wanna see what these fossils are all about.

Bray: *smiles* That would be great.

Cara: If you wouldn't mind, of course.

Serena: Not a problem.

And so, the group spent another hour chipping away at the rock of the crag, finding more and more of the bones they needed. Eventually, their search was called off as they put each of the bones into 4 separate containers.

Ash: Well, we have the fossils. How do we revive them?

Serena: Well, I think we have to match them up, but… I can;t tell which one goes where.

Cara: But that's what's so great about Galar fossils!

Cobalt: *tilts head* Aroo?

Cara: As a researcher, I find the best way to make a conclusion is to throw out conventional means and look at the outcome ina new way.

Gary: What are you talking about?

The woman then took two of the containers, one of the jawed head and one of the finned skeleton. Sensing something scientific going on, Ash decided to send out Psi to watch.

Psi: What is happening? Where are we?

Green: Galar. We're watching these two explain fossils and theorizing how they'd turn out revived via simple thoughts.

Psi: ….Oh, I just know this will make me sick to my stomach.

Cara: See, these two bone sets must make up one Pokemon. It must've lived in the water, so it needed to have fins in order to swim and… *turns skull upside down* It's head would have to be upside down in order to eat. I've decided to call it "Arctovish".

Ash: Huh.

Gary: Well, that's… Interesting.

They then turn to Bray, who then takes the plated tail bones and the beaked skull.

Bray: Now here's my theory. These two sets go together as my theory states that long ago, it lived in dense forests where flying Pokemon found it easier to run instead of fly. As such, they needed to develop strongr and thicker legs. I shall name my final result "Dracozolt".

Cobalt: Oh….

Psi: I can see where they are going with this, but…. This is just sick.

Gary: Really….. Let's say, interesting thoughts.

Cara: We gathered all of the fossils we need, so now we can start getting them restored!

Bray: Sounds good.

They then take the trays of bone and place them onto the ground before closing them off with several colored lids; red, orange, blue, and aqua. Though, when they tried to group the containers to make the Pokemon they wanted… They ran into a small complication as the lids were tinted and unable to be seen through.

Bray: Okay, so… *takes blue and red containrs* These two make my Dracozolt, right?

Cara: Hold on, I thought part of my Arctovish was the blue one.

Bray: No, this one's mine! Your's is the aqua one!

Cara: I'm pretty sure you mean mine is the blue o-

Green: SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP AND JUST CHOOSE TWO OF THEM!

Sensing their compatriot's annoyance, Psi used Psychic to split the four containersbetween the two scientists as the woman simply shrugged and brought out a pair of yellow devices via wagons, these devices having funnels on top and a slot on the bottom half.

Cara: Behold! Our very own fossil restoration machine!

Serena: Wow!

Ash: Amazing!

Gary: This is gonna be good… How does this even work without the complete bone structure?

Cara: Good question. You see, it works similar to a Pokeball, as it uses light particles to-

Bray: They won;t understand, just get on with it.

Cara: Jerk…. But he's my jerk. Okay. *presses button* Collection, on!

At the press of the button, two stalks rose from the funnels on the machine, which zapped beams of light at the orange and aqua containers while Bray's machine zapped the red and blue ones.

Cara: Okay, not for the reservation button-

Bray: RESTORATION.

Cara: Oops!

As the man rolled his eyes, he hid a smile as both scientists pressed another button on the machine, where a ball symbol showed up on a screen, similar to a loading sequence.

Cara: And now with the restoration process in place, the separate fossils are converted into light particles and are traced for any primitive DNA to restore it to the complete Pokemon.

Bray: Basically, it's like putting together a puzzle.

Ash: So, how long does it take?

Bray: approximately….. 4 hours.

Cobalt: 4 HOURS?! What are we supposed to do until then?!

Psi: ….Do any of you know how to play Mahjong?

—-

Later on, for the next 4 hours, Ash, Gary, Serena, Bray, Cara, Cobalt, Green, and Psi were sitting on the ground. In the middle of the circle is a large mahjong board Psi had teleported as they played to their best ability… Though, Green wasn't xactly a mahjong prodigy.

Serena: Two crack.

Ash: Five dot.

Gary: East wind.

Cobalt: Three dot.

Green: Gin!

Cobalt: Green, for the last time, this is Mahjong!

Green: Oh. Dammit.

Psi: Soap. I win again.

Bray: *looks at board* Wha- Your Alakazam won again?!

Cara: That's 13 games in a row!

Psi chhuckled to themself, but it was interrupted by a series of beeping comin from the two machines.

Bray: The fossil restoration's complete!

Ash: Already? Well, let's go!

Gary: *excited* This is bound to be the scientific discovery of the century!

The group then approached the machines, Gary and Psi becoming the most observant as Cara and Bray reach for the buttons.

Cara: Alright. Let's see if our hypothesis pays off, Bray.

Bray: Remember to use the EXTRACTION button.

Cara: I know, I know.

As they press the buttons on the side of the machines, two beams of light emerge from the slots on the bottoms, much to everyone's excitement as they then take shape. Suddenly, the light from Cara's machine died down to reveal a Pokemon unlike any other. It had a blue fish-like head with fins on its bottom jaw, jagged fangs, and white eyes with black rectanglar pupils. Ot's bottom half resembled a dragon-type's bottom half with red and green swirled skin and green feet with red claws. Its body curved inwards as plates lined the "tail".

?: Yay~! Morning~! I love morning~!

And from Bray's machine also came something unique. It had a light-blue body with a snow-like patch on the top, blue fins with white patches on the ends and some spots for feet, and a blue tail with a fin on top. It also had two yellow hands and a raptor-like head with closed eyes and a blue spot on each cheek, with a nostril always producing mucus.

?: Cold…. So…. Cold….. ACHOO! *sniffles* Bless me.

Cobalt: Woah! They actually came to life!

Serena: They look… Different than I expected.

Gary: Guess there was a bit of a mix up with the fossils.

Bray: Here's the thing, Galar fossils can be quite odd.

Psi: "Odd" is barely scratching the surface of this….. Thing that is happening….

Bray: Sure, this sin;t how we theorized, but who'd imagine these results?! *to his creation* You! Judging by your shivering and your fin-like feet, you must've used your cold powers to keep your fod frozen! Therefore, I shall name you… "Arctozolt"!

Arctozolt?: *chuckles* Okay.

?: Yay, you have a name now! Can I have a name too?

Ash: What about this one?

Cara: Well, it has both aspects of Water and Dragon-type Pokemon. So, I shall call it…. "Dracovish"!

Dracovish?: Dracovish?... *cheers* Yay, I'm Dracovish!

Green: Hey, I'm the one who urged Psi to give these two dingalings the fossils! I should at least name this one!

Psi: Okay, fne Green. What do we name them?

Green: Alright, let's think about this logically…. It looks like a fish… But it's also a dragon…. A dragon that's a fish…. I got it! I will name him….. Jaws.

The others that could understand Green looked at him in confusion, except for the two fossil Pokemon, before Ash turned back to Cara.

Ash: So it's called Dracovish?

Cara: Yep. I theorize that with its strong legs and powerful jaw, it must've ruled over its home, but went extinct when it overhunted its food.

Psi: But, you just revived it. Would that not mean that this Pokemon technically never existed until-

Green: See?! Proof that Jaws is the better name!

Cobalt: Dude, seriously. Stop.

Ash: Well, nonetheless. Welcome to the world, Dracovi-

Suddenly, Cobalt pulled Ash back as the new Poemon almost bit down on Ash's head. It took a step forward, which then caused Ash and his Pokemon to run away, the Dracovish running after them.

Cobalt: What's wrong with this thing, why is it after us?!

Ash: Maybe they're hungry or something!

Green: But we're not food!

Ash: Psi, Dark Pulse!

The Alakazam then fired a beam of darkness at the Dracovish. However, instead of deterring it, it simply got angry and opened its massive mouth, spitting out a huge torrent.

Green: It's using Hydro Pump!

Ash: Everyone, dodge it!

The four get out of the way as the Hydro Pump barrels into Arctozolt. The sudden water blast angered the fossil Pokemon as it growled while breathing on the ground, snow flakes lined its breath as it laced the ground Ash and his Pokemon were running on with ice.

Serena: Ash!

Gary: Arctozolt just used Powder Snow.

Ash, Cobalt, and Green slipped on the ice as Psi simply levitated in the air as suddenly, Dracovishslipped as well. But it crashed into the trio, sending them into the air and eventually onto its back before running off as Arctozolt kept firing Powder Snow.

Psi: Ash!

Cobalt: We'll be okay, Psi! Help out with Arctozolt, we'll deal with Dracovish!

Eventually, a Powder Snow hit the two scientists, freezing them in a huge block of ice.

Serena: Oh no, what do we do?!

Gary: Serena, send out Kyyubi. You can use her Ember to melt the ice.

Serena: Huh- Oh! Right. *throws Pokeball* Kyubi, thaw them out with Ember!

As the Fennekin was released, Kyubi hacked a small cloud of embers on the ice block, melting it slightly as Gary turned to the raging Arctozolt while Psi stood by him as he took out a Pokeball.

Gary: So, you wanna help, huh? *Psi nods* Alright. Let's calm us down a raging fossil. *throws Pokeball* Go, Blastoise!

—-

Meanwhile, the Dracovish is seen running through a small desert-like area, Cobalt, Green, and Ash still on his back.

Cobalt: Dude, calm down!

Green: Stop this crazy thing!

Ash: How far are you gonna run?!

Suddenly, the new Pokemon comes across a small forest-like area as it runs between all of the trees before jumping up. The three scream before Ash quickly ccloses his mouth and covers the mouths of his two starters as they then fall into a river. As Dracovish swims through the water, it then surfaces, allowing them all to breathe.

Cobalt: Hey, he's calmed down.

Ash: I get it. You just wanted to swim, huh Jaws?

Dracovish: *happily* Yeah.

Green then smirked at his trainer as a small blue and yellow bird Pokemon landed on his head. Ash chuckled as he took out his Pokedex.

Ash: Okay, I admit. The name's growing on me.

Pokedex: Rookidee, the Tiny Bird Pokémon. A Flying type. Rookidee will bravely challenge any opponent, no matter how powerful. This Pokémon benefits from every battle, even a defeat increases its strength a bit.

Cobalt: Huh. So it's like this region's version of Pidgey.

Ash: Yeah, I guess so. Alright, Jaws, you've had your fun. Now, can you take us back with the others?

Jaws: Okay!

The Pokemon then jumps out of the water and runs off again back to where the others resided. Speaking of which, back at the base camp, Gary is battling the Arctozoly with Blastoise as Psi stands with him. Meanwhile, Serena was ending to Bray and Cara as they had finally melted out of the ce, but shivered like crazy.

Serena: Are you two okay?

Bray: Well, we're alive.

Gary: Blastoise, use Gyro Ball!

The massive turtle tucked into itsshell and spun towards Arctozolt as it cried in aggression and charged itself, its beak sparking up with electricity.

Gary: What's that?

Serena: I've never seen that move before.

Psi: Must be a new move. Fascinating!

Despite this, Psi picked up the Pokemon with Psychic and threw it back beforeit could strike Blastoise.

Gary: Now, Hydro Pump!

Blastoise fired two high-powered water blasts from his cannons, only for the Arctozolt to withstand the blast.

Gary: Hydro Pump did nothing. That really takes guts… *smirks* I like this guy.

Green: GET OUTTA THE WAY!

Gary: Huh?

In the distance, they see Jaws running at top speed, Ash, Cobalt, and Green screaming from adreneline as it kept its pursuit towards the camp.

Psi: Is that not Ash and the-?

The Alakazam then screams as Jaws crashes into Arctozolt and Psi, knocking all three of them out and allowing Blastoise to take a sigh of relief as Gary recalled him. As Serena walked up to Gary, Ash and his party sat up as Jaws sat back up.

Green: Psi, are you good?

Psi: *groans, gets up* That was… Most unpleasant. What happened?

Cobalt: Turns out Jaws here just wanted to swim.

Psi: Of course! Due to Dracovish- I mean, Jaws's sudden restoration, it must have gone berserk at the sight of Ash. Since it is a Water-type, the water must have caused a natural instinct to calm down.

Ash: Amazing. *to Jaws* Are you hurt?

Jaws simply smiled and playfully bit onto Ash's head in response, causing the boy to chuckle.

Ash: Okay, okay, I get it. Just stop it!

Arctozolt then gets up, looking much more calm than before.

Arctozolt: *sighs* Much better…

Gary: Glad to see you got your head on straight.

Bray: Seems like these two have taken a shine to you two.

Ash: Are you two okay?

Cara: Thanks to you, kids.

Gary: Hey, uh… What's gonna happen to these guys now that you've restored them?

Cara: You know… I didn;t think that through.

Bray: So careless…

Cara: But you asked me to marry you, anyway.*to Ash and Gary* So basically, we don;t know…. Why, you guys want them?

Ash: Wait, seriously? You'll just give them to us?

Bray: Yeah, we already got the data, so we're happy. Plus I think it'd be best if you two took care of them instead of them going to some weird research lab.

Gary: Hmm… What do you say, Arctozolt? Wanna join me?

Arctozolt: Sure! You put up a good fight!

Ash: Jaws, I bet we're gonna get along just fine.

Jaws: *flaps fins* Yeah, yeah, YEAH!

With a smile between the two, both Ash and Gary took out an empty Pokeball and tapped them on the Pokemon they wanted, sucking them inside, with the balls locking after a minute.

Ash: We just caught a once in a lifetime Pokemon.

Gary: Gramps is gonna flip his lid. I'll have to tell him once we reach Stow-On-Side.

Bray: Oh, you're looking for Stow-On-Side?

Cara: *points forward* It's about an hour that way. If you hurry, you guys could make it before nightfall.

Ash: Wow… Thanks for the firections, guys.

Cara: And thank you all for the research help.

Bray: Now, if you'd excuse us, we're going rto warm up by cuddling near a fire.

Ash nodded as the group said their farewells to Bray and Cara before leaving. The boy looked at the ball containing his newest catch. H ewasn;t sure what a Pokemon like Jaws would have in store for him, but he'd have to wait and see and he and his friends made their way towards Ash's second Frontier Battle.
