Puck reacts with shock to that answer whilst Subaru remains confused
"No family name so that's the way you may address me alright"
"Satella? That's a pretty name" Subaru responds
"You've got terrible taste" Puck whispers into Satella's ear
"Right, let's get back to finding that thief girl!" Subaru yells in excitement
More minutes pass but the duo and spirit are still unable to find the blonde thief, soon after the duo come across a lost girl
"Subaru, that child over there do you think she's lost?" Satella asks
"Yeah but our #1 priority should be finding that thief girl right?" Subaru responds
"That's also important but if she's lost we have to do something" Satella states
"Fine, but let's not take too much time with her" Subaru says as he swallows his impatience
Satella nods and attends to the child
"Looks like somethings the matter, maybe I could be of help. Did you come here on your own or with mommy and daddy?" Satella asks the child
The little girl appears unnerved by the look of Satella and begins crying. A coin appears in front of the girl
"What you see here before you is a rarity coming from the exotic nation of Japan, a jagged ten yen coin. Observe closely as I take this coin and clutch it tightly in my hand!" Subaru says to the girl in an effort to comfort her
"Now, where did it go?" Subaru says to the girl as he plays the trick
"Well take a look at this, I found where the coin was hiding" Subaru says as he finished the trick, brushing the coin from her hair between his fingers
"Here you go it's yours, like I said it's rare so take good care of it"
"Thank you sir" the girl says, now comforted
Satella and Subaru begin walking with the girl
"Ah I see, you got separated from your mom. You don't need to worry, this girl and I will help you find her" Subaru says to comfort the little girl
"Wow look at us, we really look like a married couple holding their kid. As much as I'd wanted to do that, I unfortunately couldn't find the 'right girl'" Subaru trails off on
"More like couldn't bother on pursuing a girl let alone talking to one, man i'm really lame with these excuses" Subaru thinks to himself
The trail of thought Subaru soon ended as the girl yelled in excitement upon seeing her mother
"Looks like she found her" Subaru says
"Yes I'm so relieved" Satella says
The duo now sit together on a bridge to take a break
"Ok so in my opinion that whole string of events with that little girl really just sapped our time and energy from finding that thief so I wonder what you got out of that" Subaru asks Satella
"Thats easy, now we can continue our search for my insignia at ease knowing we did the right thing, you care too much about finding that thief and for a much more petty reason than me y'know" Satella responds to Subaru
"Hey, it's not petty! You saw how I was about to be murdered over there and she just ignored me" Subaru pouts to Satella
"If you were that much more interested in finding her then why did you choose to stay with me and help that lost girl instead of going off without me" Satella asks Subaru
"Well it doesn't hurt too much to take some time out of your day and help someone does it? You should know that by that display of yours in the alleyway" Subaru responds to Satella
"If I were to guess you're the type that nobody can't seem to get along with" Satella says to Subaru
"Seriously? How did you know, it's such a struggle getting friends when you act like me, even I get annoyed by it sometimes but to drop a bombshell on me like that" Subaru responds
"But I will admit you haven't been much of a bad boy though" Satella says
"Why do you act like I'm so much younger than you? There shouldn't be that many differences between us, right?" Subaru asks Satella
"Well you may think that but you'd be wrong because I'm actually half-elf" Satella responds to Subaru
Subaru's face turns into an expression of uncertainty and fear
"Wait…did you say half-elf?" Subaru says to Satella
"I was really expecting a reaction like that, yes im a half-elf" Satella states
"What's the other half" Subaru asks as his expression turns into a frown
"That'd be human" Satella quickly responds
Subaru begins thinking to himself
"Dammit! I really found this girl cute but she's a half breed, think Subaru think, if she was fully elven it'd be completely off limits to get with her but she just told me she's half human as well, would it be ok then to get with her since our kids would be only a quarter elf? I've got so many questions like what would the effects of that quarter elf blood be, how would they look like, more importantly how will they act. I made a vow not to get with any girl that'd dilute my family blood with unworthiness but she really seems like a good person, this is tearing my fucking head! Just act a little cold with her alright? Alright" Subaru thinks to himself, his burst of speculation overwhelming himself
"Did my response cause you any feelings of fear or general unwellness?" Satella asks Subaru
"Hmph, it quite did 'half-breed'" Subaru responds, unable to quickly think of a better answer
"Half-breed?" Satella says in confusion
"Well now that you've told me your little heritage secret, that's what my opinion of you has become, you're just a half-breed" Subaru responds
Puck appears from Satella's crystal
"Acting cold now? Hmph you were really promising Subaru, I can't blame you though Lia just looks like the witch too much" Puck says to Subaru
"It's not that I care about, it's the fact she's got eleven blood" Subaru says
Puck stares at Subaru with a new found feeling of hostility
"So you're one of those people" Puck says to Subaru in a cold manner
"One of those?" Subaru says in confusion
"It's like this world thinks there's not enough people that hold hatred towards demi-humans, let alone my daughter" Puck says
Subaru begins to feel colder, he begins feeling like frost is being directed towards him from the direction Puck is facing
"Puck that's enough! Subaru is justified to hate me for being a half-elf, I don't need to be embarrassed any further" Satella pleads to Puck
"Fine, but don't get too attached to vermin like him Lia" Puck states as he goes back into his crystal
"I may have acted too cold there, damn I really was not expecting Puck to react so strongly but why did Satella tell me that i'm justified to hate her? Does she hate herself or is there something deeper that i'm not aware of" Subaru thinks to himself
"I'm really sorry about that Subaru, it's…it's fine if you don't like me for being a half-elf really, I understand" Satella says to Subaru
Subaru stares at Satella and struggles where or not he should tell her about his true feelings
"We should get back on our search alright?" Satella says
Subaru decides not to tell Satella about his true feelings for the time being
"Wait, we've got no clue where that insignia of yours is being held so could we stop walking around aimlessly and think of a plan first?" Subaru says to Satella
"What do you mean?" Satela asks Subaru
"Like going back to the scene of the crime, where exactly was your insignia stolen?" Subaru asks Satella
The duo go back to the appa stand
"And then she told me it was right around here so I told her to leave everything to me" Subaru says to the green haired vendor
"I thought I had a customer but you're that broke kid from earlier" the green haired vendor says to Subaru
"Now don't you think I've got a new acquaintance with me? If you help us answer some questions she might become a regular customer" Subaru says to the green haired vendor
"Subaru im not sure what you expected of me but I don't have any money either" Satella says to Subaru
"Look boy I don't have time to answer any questions for not one but two broke customers so I'll tell you this again, get out of here!" the green haired vendor exclaims to Subaru
"Hey mister!" a voice belonging to a green haired little girl that the duo had helped earlier yelled
"Thanks for your help earlier" the mother of the little girl says
"Why're you back here?" Subaru asks the mother
"Its my husbands shop so we just wanted to stop by" the mother responds
"Hey there's my girl" the green haired vendor says as he hugs the little girl
"Now wait a second, how do you know these two broke kids?" the green haired vendor asks his wife
"She got lost and these two helped bring her back to me" the mother responds to her husband
"Thanks again lady, here" the little girl says to Satella as she presents her a flower
"She was hoping we'd find you so please accept that token as a way of gratitude for what you've done" the mother says to Satella
"Thank you very much" Satella says as she pins the flower to her dress
"Sorry about that from before, I wanna show you appreciation for helping my daughter so ask me anything" the green haired vendor says to the duo
"There you see, a little bit of time 'wasted' and some extra effort put in came back around and worked in our favor" Satella says in a triumphant attitude towards Subaru
The duo walk into the slums district of the capital
"This place really is a travesty, you're sure that thief is out here?" Subaru asks Satella
"That vendor told me the thief's name is Felt and that she lives out here in the slums, hope he got the right person" Subaru thought to himself
"Maybe someone will tell us if we ask" Satella says
"Or we could come back later, it's getting late" Subaru says
"I'd ask Puck but you're right, it is getting late so I'll need him to continue resting"
"So should we come back tomorrow?" Subaru asks Satella
"No, we need to keep moving forward on this" Satella says to Subaru
"So how are we gonna find Felt now?" Subaru asks Satella
"I can contact the lesser spirits" Satella answers
"Lesser spirits?" Subaru says in confusion
"They're not full fledge spirits like Puck, they grow little by little overtime and when they grow enough strength and self awareness then they can become full fledged spirits" Satella answers to Subaru
Bright orbs surround Satella as she contacts them for direction, Subaru looks at Satella in astonishment
"Should I make an exception for her? Should I even consider her to be someone lesser than me?" those encroaching thoughts played out in Subarus head
The day becomes night as the duo continue looking for Felt
"It's getting more desolate and quiet" Satella says
"Hard to believe she actually lives out here" Subaru states
"I know but the lesser spirits specifically said they saw someone who looks like Felt headed in this direction" Satella says to Subaru
Subaru notices a passerby
"Excuse me man, know where a girl named Felt would be?" Subaru asks the passerby
"Felt? There's nothing that way except old man Rom's loothouse, I guess she must have stolen something pretty important for you two to come out here. Well I wish you luck on bargaining to try and get it back, live strong ok?" the passerby says to the duo
The night grows darker as the duo approach the loothouse
"What was he talking about, why do I have to pay money to get back something stolen from me" Satella says
"Don't worry about it, I can handle the negotiations" Subaru says
"Then I entrust you to handle this, even if you don't like me I wish you the best of luck Subaru" Satella says
"Sure, sure, but don't come in until I say so Satella" Subaru says
Subaru looks at the unresponsive Satella
"What's the matter?" Subaru asks
"Its nothing, if you manage to get my insignia back then I'll apologize" Satella says
Subaru opens the door and begins searching the loothouse for Rom
"So am I walking into a snake pit or a saw trap, there's all this stolen goods but it sounds like nobody is here to guard it" Subaru says
Subaru continues walking until he notices the puddle sounds his shoes are making, Subaru looks down to see what he stepped on
"Wait…is all of this…b-blood?" Subaru asks himself with a sense of shock
Subaru looks up and notices the corpse of Rom, his mouth gushing out with blood
"What the fuck is going on?" Subaru says under his breath
"Oh dear you found that?" a woman's voice from the shadows said
Subaru, feeling unable to move out of fear, immediately looks behind him to know who said that
"Well I have no choice then, no choice at all" the woman's voice says
Subaru is slashed open from the shadows and begins tumbling onto the floor
"It…burns" Subaru thinks to himself
Subaru soon notices the gaping wound on his stomach
"What the fuck is happening,What the fuck is happening,What the fuck is happening" Subaru incoherently thinks to himself from the shock
"This is bad, this is really bad, i'm really gonna fucking die here" Subaru thinks to himself
"Subaru, What's wrong, you ok?" Satella asks as she begins walking into the loothouse
"You idiot, don't come in here!" Subaru shouts in his mind
"Stop…don't come in…get out…run…away" Subaru says in a struggle
Satella does not hear Subarus pleas and continues walking into the loothouse until she herself gets stabbed in the back by the shadowy woman and drops dead on the floor next to Subaru
"You stupid half breed…" Subaru says in a struggle
"Why didn't you listen to….me" Subaru continues saying as he reaches out for her hand
"Why does see..ing you hurt...make my heart…feel…feel...so…awful?" Subaru says as he holds onto Satella's hand
"Why does it hurt…..Satella" Subaru says in his last breath
At that moment, Subaru Natsuki had lost his life
Authors note: I originally intended for Subaru to admit to Satella that she's cute but I then I realized it'd be better for him to suppress his feelings for her
