Madison finally reached her room and took her hair down and headband off. Zor was in her room, resting near by the fireplace until he notices that his mistress returned.
"What a catastrophe party that was. Barely meet more people and the stage got caught on fire."
Zor chirped and growled like he was talking to her.
"No, Zor. I know that wasn't all you, it was all Shrek's. But that was really an accident." she said as she was now in her nightgown and lied down on her bed. "Plus, I can still see that Shrek doesn't really want to be king. Doing all the duties and responsibilities it's just not him. That's what he said."
The dragon looked at her and chirped.
"At least no one got hurt, which is good, although there is something that got my attention and worry."
Zor gently got on the bed and looked at her in concern.
"About Fiona. She's been started to act strange like she's been eating a lot lately. I don't why unless... she could possibly be..."
Suddenly, there came a few knocks on the door and Viola quickly entered.
"Maddie! You better get change quick!" said the maid as she grabbed one of the dresses.
"Why? What's wrong? What's the matter?" she asked but Viola didn't answer, "Please, just tell me!"
Viola looked at her with concern and sadness in her eyes.
"It's the king."
In the king's chambers, Queen Lillian along with Puss, Donkey, Madison, Shrek, and Fiona were gathered around a big bowl with a lily pad. The frog, King Harold was lying there, coughing and wheezing as he looked at all six.
"I'm dying!" the king spoke inhales and launches into a violent coughing fit.
All five looked at him with worry and sadness but Shrek cringed like he had done something.
"Harold?" the queen spoke as she held her husband's webbed hand.
"Don't forget to pay the gardener, Lillian." he spoke softly to her.
"Of course, darling." the queen nodded as she was used to these kinds of non-sequiturs.
Madison looked sadly at the king. She felt like a tear coming out of her eye and a memory came to her of her grandfather and her other grandfather. She was close to one of them, but she loves them both.
"Fiona..." the king spoke as he looked at his daughter.
"Yes daddy?" the princess answered.
"I know I've made many mistakes with you."
"It's okay."
"But your love for Shrek has taught me so much. And your friend has also taught me such wise words." said the king as he looked at Madison for a moment and then looked at Shrek. "My dear boy, I am proud to call you, my son."
"And I'm proud to call you my Frog… King Dad in-law." Shrek spoke as he smiled to him.
"Now, there is a matter of business to attend tooo…"
Suddenly, the king starts wheezing and coughing. The whole looked at him in worry until the king stops as his eyes were closed.
"The Frog King... is dead." Puss spoke as he solemnly removes his hat.
Madison tilts her head down in sadness while Fiona sobs in Shrek's arms until the king suddenly wakes up, coughing. He was still alive for a moment.
"Put your hat back on, fool." Donkey whispered to Puss as he put his hat back on.
"Shrek, please come hither." said the king.
Fiona and Shrek looked at each other and the ogre kneeled down beside him.
"Yeah, dad?"
"This Kingdom needs a new king. You and Fiona are next in line for the throne."
"Oh!" Shrek laughed, thinking it was a joke, "Next in line. Now you see Dad, that's why people love you. Even on your deathbed you're still making jokes."
Shrek chuckled but then notice the King was looking at him with stern, stone-faced.
"He's not joking, Shrek." Madison spoke to him.
"Oh, come on Dad…" Shrek spoke as he leans closer, "An Ogre as King? I don't think that's such a good idea. I mean, there's got to be somebody else. Anybody!"
Harold thought for a moment and then looked at his son-in-law.
"Aside from you there is only one remaining heir."
"Really?" Shrek was brightened as he heard what he said, "Who is he, Dad?"
"His name is… is… is…"
"What's his name? What's his name?!"
"Is..."
The King starts to hyperventilate. He was coughing and wheezing hard.
"Daddy!" Fiona cried out as tears roaming down her cheeks.
The frog king let out one final cough and lay back down, with his eyes opened and a fly came out of his mouth.
Puss starts to take his hat off, thinking that the king is now dead. But as the fly buzzes around, a tongue caught it and pulls back. The cat puts his hat back on as the king wasn't dead. Harold chewed his last fly and then looked at Shrek.
"His name is Arthur."
"Arthur?" the ogre questioned as the king coughed.
"I know you'll do what's riiiight…" he exhaled his final breath, and his eyes were now closed.
"Harold?" Lillian questioned.
"Your majesty?" Madison spoke.
"Dad? Dad! Dad!" Shrek spoke to the frog but no answer.
The king is now dead.
"Do your thing, man." Donkey whispered to Puss as he bows his head and cat took his hat off.
Fiona starts to cry and hugs Shrek. The weight of the King's request hits Shrek and he was in a state of shock. Madison bowed his head down in sorrow and let a single tear fall.
On a grey, cloudy morning, the streets of Far Far Away are empty and the stores on Rodeo Drive were closed. In the castle, the knights of Far Far Away marched toward the castle as the flag was lowered to a half-masked.
At the pond with a statue of Frog King Harold, people, animals, and creatures were gathered around for a funeral and a bunch of frogs were singing "Live and Let Die." Queen Lillian was holding an old shoe box and set it on top of a lily pad, sends it floating out into the water. Everyone along with Madison, Donkey, Puss and the Fairy-tale Creatures all bow their heads solemnly and Shrek puts his arm around Fiona to comfort her. As the funeral has ended, the crowd begins to disperse, heading back in the castle. Leaving Shrek, Fiona, Madison and Queen Lillian as they sadly gaze at the pond.
Moments later, in the ballroom, people were gathered with food, chat, watching the rain through the windows, and giving their condolences to the queen. Madison was standing by the table with food, looking at everyone with sad looks and talking about the king. She noticed Fiona was alone by the corner, crying. She thought of talking to her but felt like she need some alone time.
A memory came to her Madison's mind, about her grandfather (her mother's father). He was like a second father to her and how close she was to him. Always give him hugs, kisses on the head, and telling how much she loves him. When she heard he passed away, she was heartbroken. At the funeral, before she leaves, she did plant him a kiss on the head before the casket closes.
"Maddie?" a voice spoke.
Madison snapped back into reality, wiped the tear off of her cheek, and then turned to see Shrek standing beside.
"I need to tell you something."
"What is it?" Madison asked.
"I've been thinking a lot. I've decided to go out and find Arthur."
"What?"
"He has to be king, Maddie. I can't do all these duties and king stuff. That's not me. If this Arthur guy was supposed to be the next heir, it's him. Which is why I'm asking you to come with me and the guys."
Madison looked at her with a surprise look. She has been staying in the castle for a while but didn't get to have a single adventure in Shrek's world for a while.
"Are you sure you want my help?"
"You've been wanting an adventure for a while. Plus, I'm pretty you and your accessory could do something."
Madison looked at her necklace as it was glowing a few times which she understands what it means.
"Alright. I'm in."
