Chapter 7: Friendly Spar (Yuji)

A new day had started in Republic City.

And with it, presented new possibilities for it's citizens.

But for a certain young avatar, and a certain jujutsu sorcerer,it granted them the opportunity to engage once more in what was quickly becoming one of their favorite joint activities together.

Sparring.

It started off as a suggestion from Korra to help both her and Yuji better understand one another by dwelling on their love for fighting.

And though this was only the second time they had chosen to spar each other, their eagerness was palpable.

And just like their previous bout,the stage for their matchup remained unchanged.

Air Temple Island.

The openess and spacing of the Training Grounds, coupled with the absence of the Island's other residents made it the perfect place for Korra and Yuji to have their bout.

The rules were simple; whoever got knocked down on their back lost.

Yuji would take a 'On Guard' stance while Korra would take a classic boxing stance. Both of them grinning,as they eagerly awaited for the other to make the first move.

In an instant,Korra would throw fire blast jabs at Yuji,to which he would duck and take a step forward while slightly weaving to the side to avoid. Korra would then follow up with a low, 180, roundhouse sweep kick that would send a wave of fire towards Yuji's legs, causing him to jump in order to avoid it.

With her back turned, Korra would then throw a jumping reverse roundhouse followed up with a normal roundhouse kick, which would cause two fire balls to fly towards Yuji who was still in mid-air. Yuji would barely hold up his hands to block the attack, causing him to grunt in pain in the process. Both of them would land on the ground, with Yuji's arms still held up, and with slight smoke coming off them.

With narrowed eyes, Korra would reach her right hand to her left side, before thrusting it forward, causing a water whip to lunge towards Yuji. Yuji's eye would widen upon the water whip wrapping around his right hand.

"Uuahhhh!" Shouted Yuji as he would be sent stumbling towards Korra once she dragged on the water whip. Once Yuji was inches away from her,Korra would let go of the water whip, causing it to dissolve and fall on the ground. She would then throw a kick aimed towards Yuji's face, but Yuji would manage to duck even further while stumbling to avoid the attack.

Yuji would then bring himself to a stop, but upon turning back to face Korra, Yuji would arch his neck back in order to avoid a fiery uppercut from Korra's right hand. He would then jump back slightly to avoid a left legged, roundhouse kick aimed at his midsection, before weaving to his left to avoid a right legged, reverse roundhouse kick from Korra.

Not relenting,Korra would throw a left legged, roundhouse kick aimed for Yuji's temple, but Yuji would hold up his right hand to block it. Yuji would then throw a left jab, but Korra would duck down to avoid it, before throwing a right legged,sweep kick as a counter,to which Yuji would jump back to avoid.

Using the momentum of the failed sweep kick to get up with her back turned,Korra would then throw a straight kick with her left leg, causing a fireball to hit an already blocking Yuji.

Due to the power of the attack,Yuji would begin to fall back slightly, but before he could land on his back,he would stretch out his hands, and perform a backhand spring to land comfortably, and a few feet away from Korra.

With her left leg still held up,Korra would bring it down in a stomp like fashion, causing the ground beneath her to slightly crack. She would then clench her hands into fists, arch them backwards, before swinging them forward with them being held in front of her face, and while kneeling on her right leg. This motion would cause a massive landslide to rush towards a slightly frantic Yuji.

Yuji however, would then let out a deep breath in order to maintain his composure, and place a steely gaze on the oncoming attack. His clenched fists would then begin to give off a faint blue aura with a black outline.

"Divergent Fist"

With a battle cry,Yuji would then run towards the landslide, before punching it, causing it to shatter instantly and for a gasp of shock to escape Korra's mouth. Upon coming to a stop,he would then hold his left hand above his head, before doing the same with his right hand. And with another battle cry, would slam them both on the ground, causing the ground beneath Korra to shake violently, and for her to begin to lose her balance.

Seeing this as an opportunity, Yuji would get up to his feet, before running towards Korra. Vigilantly, Korra would slightly regain her footing, and immediately send a water blast with a right palm thrust, along with a weak fire ball with a left jab. Though Yuji would dodge the water blast by weaving to his right, the fireball would hit him on his right shoulder as a result, causing him to grit his teeth in pain, and slightly slump forward.

In spite of this however, Yuji's speed wouldn't be hindered as a result,as he would continue to run towards Korra. Once he was a few inches away from her,he would jump into the air towards her. Uncurling his left hand and stretching it forward, and holding up his right fist to the side of his face, preparing to land a Superman punch.

Looking up at the oncoming Yuji, Korra also held up her left fist, with it being surrounded with fire. Both combatants bracing for impact. With a battle cry,Yuji would throw the superman punch, but to his astonishment,Korra would weave to the left while dropping her left hand down,hook Yuji's right hand with her own,turn back, and use her grip on Yuji to perform a judo throw on him, causing him to land hard on his back and to let a grunt of pain in the process.

Letting go of his arm,Korra would stand over Yuji from behind with her hands on her leg while panting to catch her breath.

"Heh heh. Looks like you got me." Said Yuji with a chuckle, which would cause Korra to smirk lightly.

She would then walk around in order to face Yuji directly.

"I' m pretty good, aren't I?" Said Korra smirking even wider as she offered him a hand,to which Yuji would accept with a smile.

"True, but i was pretty good too." Said Yuji as he got up to his feet.

"Almost had you that time." Korra would look at Yuji slyly as a result.

"Emphasis on almost." Said Korra as she tapped Yuji's chest lightly with her index finger playfully.

"I'll admit,i didn't expect you to pull off that judo throw on your first try. I only showed it to you once after all." Said Yuji sincerely.

"What can I say? I'm a pretty fast learner." Said Korra cockily.

"I guess so." Said Yuji with a mild shrug, causing Korra to look at him with surprise.

"You don't believe me." Said Korra with dissapointment.

"What?!" Exclaimed Yuji as he noticed Korra's sadness.

"N-no,of course I do, where'd you get that idea?" Said Yuji with a nervous smile. To his surprise, Korra would then begin to laugh heartily.

"I'm kidding Yuji." Chuckled Korra.

"Ahh." Said Yuji as he had realized Korra's intentions.

"That was pretty mean Korra." Said Yuji with a pout and his hands crossed.

"Sorry,I can't help myself from teasing you from time to time." Admitted Korra with a broad smile.

"Your reactions are always so funny." Yuji would look away in an attempt to show that he hadn't yet forgiven Korra. It would fall apart once Korra noticed a small smile on Yuji's face.

"But hey..." Began Korra as she initially looked away from Yuji, causing him to look back at her with curiosity.

"I wouldn't have been able to do that move if you didn't show it to me. You're a pretty good teacher." Said Korra as she looked towards Yuji with her hands crossed, and with a sincere smile.

"Don't mention it,Korra. It's nothing, really." Said Yuji with a sincere smile.

"You really should give yourself more credit." Said Korra before softly punching Yuji on his shoulder.

"Ow." Whined Yuji as he held his shoulder.

"C'mon Yuji,I know that didn't hurt." Said Korra as she rolled her eyes.

"Aww,I thought I'd get you that time." Snickered Yuji as he stopped holding his shoulder.

"You're going to have to try harder than that,Yuji." Said Korra with a smirk.

"But you get points for effort." Praised Korra.

"Kinda sounds like cold comfort, don't you think?" Asked Yuji teasingly.

"Well then, you'll just have to get me next time." Said Korra with a grin, causing Yuji to grin as well.

Some time had passed since their spar came to an end, and as such,Yuji and Korra sat near the hallway on the island, observing their surroundings with delight.

"So,Yuji..." Began Korra after an initial wave of silence stood between the two.

"Hm?" Said Yuji as he turned to face Korra with a raised eyebrow

"You told me before that you've known how to fight for a while now, right?" Asked Korra.

"Mmhmm." Hummed Yuji with a nod.

"And some of your friends are pretty good fighters too." Stated Korra.

"Yep." Nodded Yuji again.

"Ok then. If you were to rate them on just their fighting ability,how would you do that?" Asked Korra.

"Are there actually any you can say is a better fighter than you are?" Yuji would look forward due to being deep in thought over Korra's question.

"Hmm." Said Yuji as he placed his right hand under his chin.

"They are two that come to mind almost immediately." Said Yuji.

"Really?" Said Korra with shock.

"They must be really good if you think they're better fighters than you." Observed Korra.

"Well... it's mostly the first one, but the second one is really tough." Said Yuji in agreement.

"I see." Contemplated Korra.

"So,who are they?" Asked Korra.

"For starters, they're both my seniors. But one's actually from Jujutsu Tech, and the other isn't." Explained Yuji.

"Is it that guy you told me about before? What was his name again?" Asked Korra, leaning forward slightly as she looked at Yuji.

"Yuta Okkotsu. And yeah, it's him." Said Yuji with a smile.

"What makes him a better fighter than you?" Asked Korra, eagerly awaiting Yuji's answer.

"Well for starters, he's just as skilled as I am, but with more experience. Not to mention,as strong as I am." Explained Yuji as he lightly stroked his chin.

"As strong as you are?" Asked Korra with shock.

"On second thought,he might be even stronger than me." Yuji corrected himself upon recalling the outcome of their first meeting.

"Get out of town!" Exclaimed Korra in disbelief, evident as well by her getting up and standing in front of Yuji.

"You don't believe me?" Asked Yuji

"Kinda hard to." Admitted Korra.

"I can't think of many people who can stop a moving truck with their bare hands." Said Korra with a smirk as she referenced Yuji's first encounter with the Equalists.

"Heh heh,I guess." Said Yuji with a sheepish smile.

"But I guess I'll take your word for it." Said Korra with a shrug.

"With the points you raised,I can see why you'd think he's a better fighter than you." Yuji would smile as a result of Korra's words.

"Yeah, but that's not even the most surprising thing about him." Said Yuji, taking Korra aback.

"Oh?" Said Korra with confusion.

"I don't know how to say it exactly, but when I fought him, he always game off that vibe that he was much more powerful than what he letting on, and that he was holding back against me." Explained Yuji,to which Korra sat beside him once more.

"You lost?" Asked a shocked Korra.

"Yeah. I never saw it coming." Admitted Yuji with a slight tone of embarrassment.

"Wow." Said Korra with awe.

"I'd hate to ever have to fight him." Stated Korra.

"You and me both." Chuckled Yuji in agreement.

"So I'm guessing the second guy's pretty close to him." Assumed Korra.

"Aoi Todo." Said Yuji with a nod.

"Like i said, he's really tough, but he's not on Yuta's level." Clarified Yuji.

"The first time we ever fought,we were evenly matched, actually." Said Yuji with a small smirk.

"Oh, good on you,Yuji." Praised Korra.

"It was nothing really. He wasn't fighting me with everything he had, and yet he still gave me a hard time." Said Yuji with a tone of humility.

"That strong,huh?" Asked Korra with a tone of understanding.

"Yep." Nodded Yuji.

"I've gotta say, Yuji, you're friends with some pretty amazing fighters." Complimented Korra.

"Yeah, I'd say so too." Said Yuji in agreement.

"You know... there's another fighter that just came to mind." Revealed Yuji.

"Hmm? A third one?" Said Korra in surprise due to the late addition.

"Yeah." Said Yuji with a low tone.

"I'm guessing he's as strong as you." Guessed Korra.

"Actually it's a she." Said Yuji sheepishly.

"Ohh,a girl. I'm liking it already." Said Korra with a grin.

"Y-y-yeah,i guess." Said a flustered Yuji.

"So... what's she about?" Asked Korra.

"Well...i haven't known her for that long,nor do i know just exactly how strong she is." Said Yuji with evident hesitation in his voice.

"A running theme with the other fighters you mentioned." Noted Korra.

"Right." Admitted Yuji with mild embarrassment.

"But...i can say that she's a natural when it comes to fighting. Perhaps even more so than the other two." Said Yuji coyly.

"That's pretty high praise,Yuji. Who's the lucky girl?" Asked Korra mischievously.

"Well,uh..." Began Yuji before cutting himself off due to being unsure of what to say.

"Uh..." Said Yuji, looking away from Korra due to words failing.

"Yuji?" Asked Korra with concern.

"It's you,Korra." Yuji managed to say.

"Me?!" Said Korra with surprise.

"Y-y-yeah." Stuttered Yuji, his cheeks becoming a notable shade of pink due to embarrassment.

"Well then..." Began Korra as she cleared her throat.

"I probably should have seen that coming..." Said Korra in an attempt to downplay the growing awkwardness between the two of them.

"Though you aren't wrong,as you've seen today..." But just like Yuji, Korra's embarrassment would also slip through the tone in which she spoke.

"But really,what I'm trying to say is..." Began Korra as she took in a deep breath to regain her composure.

"Thank you,Yuji." Yuji would look at her with his eyes widened in shock,not even remotely expecting her to say what she did.

"That's means a lot... coming from you." Said Korra with sincerity and a heartwarming smile.

Yuji's expression would soften, his embarrassment now gone.

"You're welcome,Korra." Said Yujias he would smile as well.
