It was Wednesday.
Sonic had been running through the night with Amy in his arms and all their essential belongings on his back. No matter how well Amy knew her husband, she could never have predicted this kind of madness from him. No matter how old she was, Amy was still powerless to Sonic the Hedgehog's charms. At any other ludicrous request, she would stand her ground and go down screaming until Big the Cat came home. Sonic managed to convince her to drop everything; work, home and her responsibilities, all in the same clothes she wore the day before. All in the name of a second honeymoon. Granted, Sonic had sacrificed his old plane to fund this trip and the freedom to never worry about the cost of a phone bill, but Amy still felt scorned. Was their life not good enough for him? Had he tired of her? Their marriage?
Or was she the selfish one? Amy Rose's head shifted from her husband's chest to sneak a sneak glance at him. He had a determination in eyes when he ran, unlike in his job searches. Regardless of his unhealthy lifestyle of eating chili dogs combined with drinking in recent years, Amy stayed besotted with her childhood crush. His quills had grown longer and unkempt, his muzzle darkened slightly with a permeant scar on his cheek, and his chest fur had finally grown in, although not as developed as Shadow or Silver's in their teenaged years. Amy certainly wouldn't complain as she snuggled into his chest contently. Sonic had grown up handsomely, which was why Amy's jealousy towards other women outside their inner circle only heightened.
Amy only wished his age came with maturity, but these last few hours told her that was wishful thinking, foolish in fact. Sonic would never change. Amy knew that. She never wanted to changed him, but subconsciously she still tried.
'Maybe that's why our relationship's changed. Sonic's been too kind to say no to me since we got married.'
Sonic finally admitted he missed Amy's own sense of adventure, lamented how her sassy independence was replaced with stoic pragmatism, or in his own words 'just no fun anymore'. Whilst Amy loved having her way, she also missed him challenging her. Like when any honeymoon faze ends, reality sinks in. They weren't Freedom Fighters anymore. The world was going to give them a free ride because they stopped Eggman time after time. The couple had to live for themselves. Amy could sense Sonic felt lost after Eggman went senile. Saving the world was his job, not delivering pizzas. No one could be paid to roam the world for free and he needed to accept that. Amy acknowledged she could be too hard on him. Not because a loss of love for him, but to help him to move on. She thought she was enough, but that was wishful thinking too.
The moon was high in the sky with the stars sparking above the couple. Amy was still unsure where they were going. Aside from revealing that their end destination would be Spagonia, Sonic kept their pit stops a secret. Amy knew her husband would be getting a kick out of leaving her out of the loop considering she was used to being the woman of the house. Until they arrived at... wherever they were going, the pink hedgehog decided to get some rest and enjoy the ride.
The rush of the wind combing her quills, her view of world reduced to flashing lights, the warmth of Sonic's chest... It had been years since they had gone on a run like this. It took her back to memories as a little girl, scared to open her eyes as Eggman's base on Little Planet exploded around them.
Amy closed her eyes and dreamed about the two of them back at home, safe and sound.
'Hey, Ames I'm home,' Sonic quickly threw his smart shoes off and ran straight to the kitchen to hug his wife from behind, stealing kisses whilst hot soup sizzled in a pot.
'Sonic~, not until after dinner,' she used her wooden spoon to enforce a distance between them.
'Forget dinner, we can eat out later.' He offered mischievously, and then suddenly he picked her up bridal style, leaving his wife in blissful shock as he carried her upstairs, leaving the house to burn down for all she cared.
Amy smiled and unknowingly giggled whilst in dreamland, alerting Sonic to her more relaxed demeanour who was unaware of the not-so-innocent dream she was indulging in.
Sonic stopped slowly, trying his best to not wake his wife from slumber since she looked so peaceful. He laid her down at the base of a tree, and dropped his backpack beside her to get to their provisions. Unbeknownst to Amy though, there was more than toothbrushes and light snacks in this bag.
It was time to put his plan into action.
Hours later in the early hours of the morning, Amy awoke and thought her dream turned to a nightmare. She was in the middle of nowhere with no sign of life for miles.
"Sonic! Where are you?" She started to panic. She knew this impromptu trip would lead to them getting lost. Not that she knew where Sonic was planning to go.
"Oh God, I knew it! I knew this was a bad idea, I can't believe I let that idiot talk me into-"
"Don't you mean a handsome idiot?"
"AHHH!"
Sonic sped up behind her and lifted the pink hedgehog in the air by the waist. After the shock subsided, she demanded she be placed back on the hard ground.
"Tsk. Tsk. Your past self would think you're taking me for granted," he teased, but acquiesced to her plea. He offered her his hand and told her, "Let's take a trip down memory lane."
Amy knew if he took his hand again there would be no turning back. She considered screaming at him. To get it through his thick head that the past was in the past. However, that smile... she couldn't say no to that.
She composed herself and took his hand, caressing it for a moment before he led them on a short walk. They were silent for a while until Amy broke it.
"So... are you gonna' tell me why you insisted on dragging me to the middle of nowhere?"
"Just wanted a change of scene," He answered coolly. When they first met, Sonic short answers would grant him an air of mystery that Amy found intriguing and attractive. Now, she knew he was doing it to tease her on purpose.
Amy stopped in her tracks. Sonic turned around to find his wife with her hands to her hips, tapping her foot impatiently. Sonic would've laughed aloud and noted Amy was taking a page of his book, but Sonic sober now and didn't have the Liquid Courage to test his wife's patience anymore.
"You don't know where we are, do you?" He asked with a smirk.
"Of course not, you brought me to the sticks. I don't know why you're so happy to-" Amy paused, what seemed like an eclipse blinded her for a moment.
Sonic's smirk widened. His plan was finally in motion.
The ground shook unexpectedly as the Earth's gravity began to be shared by another floating object. Amy almost fell over until Sonic caught her in his arms, and sat her down beside him.
The Little Planet was back in the Earth's atmosphere above Never Lake.
"It's so beautiful..." The sight of orb made Amy cry.
"I knew you'd love it," he brought his hand up to wipe her tears and then wrap it around her back.
"Happy early Anniversary," he whispered in her ear. Amy only replied by hugging him tightly to the ground, and then laid on his chest to watch the sun and Little Planet rise and fall respectively.
The hedgehogs stayed in mutual silence until Little Planet stopped its descent.
Amy could no longer contain her happiness, "You remembered. You really remembered," she cried happily.
"Of course, I did," he said proudly.
"Yeah right, our last anniversary you remembered was the first one," she quipped but there was no anger in her voice. This moment more than made up for all the anniversaries missed.
"Well, I was going to take you down to the lake a couple times, but every time you made it more difficult to surprise you."
"But I don't understand, if this is Never Lake then... where's the lake." The lush lake and wildlife around the lake she remembered from her childhood was gone, replaced with an arid landscape.
"Beats me. Tails said it might hafta' do with global warming. It's been getting hotter every season so the lake must've dried up."
"That's awful." The most treasured place of her childhood. Where she met her soulmate, was reduced to a shadow of its former self.
"So, I thought we could fix it."
"What?!" While Amy was a green thumb, she didn't think their trip would involve hard labour.
"Well, we can't make it rain here again." He pulled out a small trough from his bag. "We can make it a little nicer."
They spent the morning planting a few seeds and watering them. Amy had missed gardening as a hobby. With all the other bills to take care of, the garden Amy was proud of became too expensive to maintain.
"There. With some better conditions and sunshine, these flowers should help make the place look better at least." Amy sighed as she sat down by her husband who offered her a sandwich. "Still, it's such a shame the Lake is gone."
"Maybe... but not for much longer," Sonic laughed.
"What do ya' mean?" Sonic only took out his phone and made her read out a news article.
"'Former President advocates for better restoration and conversation efforts for Mobian regions: Sonic the Hedgehog's home, Christmas Island, South Island, Westside Island and Never Lake are all considered for landmark environmental project...' , Oh my goodness. That's amazing! Do you have something to do with this?"
"What can I say? The guy's still a big fan, so he didn't need a lot of convincing." He said nonchalantly. "Besides, now that we're millionaires we can spend money on things that are actually important."
Amy beamed, so proud of her husband's ever powerful charisma. Even without smashing badniks, Sonic was still a hero, just fighting different battles.
Sonic shot up and stretched. "Well, its nice to be sentimental, but we gotta' go. Come on. We still have the whole world to see, before we check into Spagonia."
"But Spagonia's miles away, more than you can run, especially on water, how are we going to the get there at this rate?" Her question was answered by a large freighter plane whizzing by over their heads. Sonic waved at the waved at the pilot in the cockpit before he landed before the blue and pink hedgehogs. The pilot removed his aviator googles and jumped out of the plane to greet the pair. Amy gasped.
"Dexter!"
"Yo Dex, long time no see!" He ran up to the tan hedgehog a fist bump and half hug.
"I'm good, Tails called and said you guys needed a ride. You're lucky I'm on a long haul to Spagonia too. You guys don't mind if I make a few stops though?"
"Course not? You got Amy's stuff in the back?"
"Yep." Dexter winked back at the family man. "As well as all the stuff you ordered."
"Perfect! Come on, Ames! If we leave now, we can see the sunset in Adabat." Amy ran into the transport, holding her husband's warm hands from take off to when they landed. Amy wasn't sure what was going to happen after their anniversary trip ended. All she knew is that the life she knew before Monday was over, and she never wanted life back.
This chapter wasn't intended to be in the story, but I wanted a chapter in Amy's perspective about their relationship, so I extend this part. Also Dexter cameo. Read 'Sonic the Matchmaker' if you're confused.
Don't worry, next chapter will bring the good stuff. If you like like spicy sonamy, make sure to tune in next time. The next chapter's about their first honeymoon ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), Nothing raunchy mind you.
