AN: Trigger warning for mention of death-wish (that's the best way my sleep-deprived brain can think to call it). Definitely not a light and fluffy chapter (sorry, I should have written one of the other ideas but they felt a little sad and I thought starting angry would end up differently).

Kara had lied to her. When Lena came away from killing her brother, the only thing going through her mind was the thought that Kara had lied to her. She had invested so much of her time and emotions in the friendship with Kara, had thought there was finally someone she could trust, but it had all been a lie.

Getting a message from Kara when she returned home left Lena feeling numb. Kara had no idea what had happened, no idea that Lena was now the one holding a secret.

So Lena did what she had been taught to do by the Luthors. She pushed aside her feelings and plotted, waiting for the right moment to strike back.

If the war between Superman and Lex Luthor had ever grabbed the attention of the nation, the war between Supegirl and Lena Luthor erased it from memory. Their battleground was the whole planet. Lena threw everything she could at Supergirl, from joining with those trying to repeal the Alien Amnesty Act, to engineering a formula to create meta-humans to fight her. There were so many people who wanted power for themselves and they all stood with Lena, sensing a chance to get it. Surprisingly, the civilian casualties were low. Lena drew Supergirl to isolated areas of the planet for their battles, it was only when others double-crossed her that their battlegrounds ended up in front of the planets population. Lena dealt with them swiftly, even if Kara had offered them mercy.

"Miss Luthor, are you sure about this?" Eve asked, standing in a white lab coat, in one of the many secret Luthor strongholds.

Lena nodded. She had been fighting for nearly two years, neither side able to claim victory - Supergirl had never found her, she had never captured Supergirl. It was time for a new weapon.

Kara limped back into the DEO, supported by J'onn, looking weary. When they came into the medical bay, Alex hugged her and switched on the sun lamps once she was lying down.

"I know what you're going to say. Don't," Kara begged her sister.

Alex shook her head, "two years, Kara. Tomorrow is the anniversary of Lex Luthor's death and last year..."

Last year Kara had blown out her powers and had to be rescued by her cousin. Everyone had wanted her to go to Argo, to at least have a break from it all, but she'd refused.

She hadn't seen Lena in person for two years. Sure there had been video messages, holograms, but no Lena. She felt certain that eventually Lena would show up, would stand in front of her and she would finally have a chance to explain.

"You'll need to stay here for a couple of hours, I'll bring you dinner," Alex told her.

"Thanks."

Kara closed her eyes once she was left alone, their voices just background chatter that she had learnt to block out. She was drifting asleep when she heard the voice, intended for her ears only.

"Tomorrow, midday. Come alone."

There were a string of numbers, co-ordinates Kara realised. She held onto them in her mind, knowing that if she wrote them down Alex would find out. If there was a chance she would get to see Lena again, she would go alone.

The location turned out to be a private island. Sandy beaches, homes hidden under tall trees, exactly the sort of place that would be perfect to hide. Kara wondered how long Lena had been there as she flew overhead. The island was mostly silent, a few human voices in a building below, servants she guessed from their conversations. Kara circled the island again, noticing two chairs on the beach, with a small table between them. A woman walked out of the trees and sat on one of the chairs, and Kara shot to Earth, bringing up a cloud of sand when she landed.

She stood and stared at Lena, having hoped to see her, but hardly daring to believe she was really there.

Lena was wearing a large floppy sunhat with large, dark glasses, staring right back at her.

"You need to work on your landings," Lena told her, brushing imaginary sand off her green dress.

Kara knew the sand hadn't reached her. Sure there was a little dip where she had landed, but the circle of disrupted sand was less than half the distance to the chairs. Without answering, Kara walked over to her. She paused, unsure whether to sit down, but Lena waved towards the other chair and Kara sat.

"Drink?" Lena asked, pouring a glass for herself from the red pitcher and taking a sip.

Kara poured without taking her eyes off Lena, drank without thinking. Lena smiled.

The red kryptonite buzzed through her veins, taking over before she could register surprise. Her eyes, when they focused back on Lena, were narrowed.

"The effects won't last long," Lena assured her.

"Why?"

"Why the kryptonite, or why won't it last long?"

"Either. Both."

"Because I only need it to last until you do what I want."

"Which is?"

"Kill me."

Kara sat back in her chair, "no."

Lena frowned, "you drank the red kryptonite, it should reveal your real desires. You want to kill me, now you can."

Kara laughed, "that's what you think I want?"

"After everything I've done for the last two years you should."

"And you want to die?"

"It's the fitting conclusion. Lex knew it too. No matter what I do, you will win and the world will write in the history books of the heroic alien who fought another evil Luthor. This way, they will think you killed Lex and me, your name will always be tied to our deaths. Your place in the history books will always have a hint of suspicion."

"I won't kill you, Lena."

"I fought you for two years. Isn't that enough?"

"It's not what I desire," Kara emphasised the last word. "You were right though, this batch of red kryptonite makes me want to be truthful."

"Oh please, spare me the Supergirl speech, I don't want to hear about how..."

Kara left her chair, placing her hands over Lena's wrists to stop her from moving, leaned down and kissed her. The desire to do so had been building for so long, she couldn't hold back and listen to Lena trying to hurt her anymore. She could feel Lena soften at the kiss, arms relaxing under her hands. When she pulled back, she could see Lena's eyes were closed and she smiled at the sight.

"I should have told you the truth," Kara admitted. "We were friends for long enough that I could have trusted you with my secret sooner."

Lena opened her eyes, "yes, you should."

"I don't want to fight you Lena. I've missed you."

"Why did you kiss me?"

"Because I waited too long to tell you how I felt, and I couldn't do that without revealing my other secret. I wasn't ready."

"Instead I had to find out from Lex."

"If I could change the past, I would."

"I've hated you for two years, Kara," Lena frowned as Kara's face fell. "I've loved you for longer than that, but that doesn't change anything."

"You love me?"

"As much as a Luthor can love anyone. Mine turned to hate as easily..."

"Are you sure you hate me?"

Lena stared at her in shock, "the last two years..."

"You were angry, but you never used Kryptonite until now, You never used the green kind."

"It was never the plan to kill you, just make you hate me."

Kara shook her head, "you made me your target. No-one else."

"I'm not a monster."

"I forgive you."

Lena shook her head, "no."

"Why not?"

"Because..."

"I hurt you. Yes you should have come to me and talked about it, but..."

"Okay, clearly I made a mistake with the red kryptonite, I..."

Kara held her wrists again, "listen to me."

"Why?"

"Because we're going to stop fighting."

"Oh?"

"Yes, we are going to sit here and talk until we're tired. Then we're going to have dinner and get a good nights sleep. In the morning we will talk some more and eventually we'll figure out a way for things to go back to the way they were."

"I'm pretty sure that's impossible. For one thing, your sister..."

"I'll talk to her. Also in the morning."

"You know I can't go back. Not after everything..."

"Well no, not back to National City, but I meant back to normal for us."

"As friends with secrets?"

"Friends, if you want," Kara stroked the skin of Lena's wrists, making an S shape outlined with a diamond. "With the potential to explore more."

"And if I don't accept?"

"What will it take for there to be peace between us? I'll pay the price."

Lena sighed when Kara pulled her hands away. She knew what her heart wanted.

"I want to disappear. For the world to forget that Luthor's ever existed."

"I won't tell anyone you're here."

"As for the rest..." Lena lowered her sunglasses, "we can talk about it over lunch."
