Disclaimer - I don't own anything. At least, I don't think I do, do I? No, no I don't. It's all J. K. Rowling's.
A/N - If you haven't read about Quintapeds (AKA Hairy MacBoons, pages 34 - 36 of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) then this probably won't make sense to you.
~The McCliverts and the MacBoons~
His name was Duguld McClivert, and it was his fault that the Isle of Drear is flooded with the red haired monsters we called Quintapeds.
You see, Duguld McClivert was the head of a wizard family, the McCliverts, who lived on Drear. Now, the McCliverts weren't the best at magic, but they could do basic spells well enough, and their extensive knowledge of Herbology came in handy as Drear was a rocky island and they could eat only what they grew.
Everyone in the McClivert Clan had thick reddish brown hair and was rather stout. They lived on the west side of the island while the MacBoons lived on the East.
The MacBoons were all handsome, tall, brown, blondes, and not a dingbat in the bunch. Any spell, they could cast any potion they could brew. As a result, they were highly praised amongst the wizard world.
It was just after both family had had a wedding, (Harriet MacBoon married Muggle Andrew Granger while Nellie McClivert became Nellie Longbottom) when it happened. Duguld McClivert invented a plant known as Wolfsbane. But through an unlucky chain of events, the credit went to the MacBoons.
Duguld was not happy about this. Even while the MacBoons tried to place the prestige on their neighbors, (they were very honest) the McCliverts fumed. They had thought that Wolfsbane would make them famous, and now the MacBoons were taking their limelight! That wouldn't do.
But Quintus, head of clan MacBoon invited Duguld over for some drinks to smooth things over. Duguld was soon raging drunk and began casting spells he couldn't do which ended when a vase became a rhino.
"Duguld please! Sober up man!" cried Quintus, but Duguld wouldn't have it. He shouted that Quintus had stolen his glory, that he did it on purpose, and he must pay. Again he shouted something. An arrow flew from his wand. Quintus ducked just in time but the arrow bounced off a mirror and tragically struck Duguld in the chest. Before the correct charms could be cast he died.
This didn't help the MacBoons any. The McCliverts fuming exploded. That night they vowed to journey across the island and dispose of their neighbors.
So all McCliverts could be found scurrying across the rocks, sea pounding against the shore until they saw the lights flicker out at the MacBoon homes.
Silently they snuck in and cast the spell that would supposedly turn them all into reddish mice (red being the color of their hair, a reminder of who had done the curse).
But they didn't become mice.
They became enraged monsters, low slung, red hair, with five legs. Screaming, the McCliverts ran from the empty houses trying to undo what they had done. Their lack of magical wisdom didn't help at all and they all fell to the monsters.
When the houses were excavated years later, a letter was found. It was to the Minister of Magic proclaiming that Duguld McClivert, not Quintus MacBoon, had invented Wolfsbane.
The apology came about three hundred years to late, but records were changed to fit.
And now you know the whole story.
A/N - I had been flipping through my FBAWTFT when I saw that story, quite a few story potentials in there. I don't think anyone had done anything like this so I did. Just to clear it up, Nellie McClivert - Longbottom and Harriet MacBoon - Granger are ancestors of Hermione and Neville, not their parents or grandparents or even great great grandparents. I thought it'd be funny to connect that in there. I know it's short but oh well.
