Author's Note: I was watching Pokemon: The 1st Movie when the scene where they sing Brother, my brother came on. The song kinda inspired me and this fic was the result. Hope you enjoy it.
"Go Arcanine! Flame thrower now!"
Pikachu just barely managed to avoid the flame.
"Come on, loser. Can't you do better than that?" Gary yelled.
That made Ash angry. "Pikachu!" he yelled. "Thunder shock!"
The entire area lit up as lightning bolts shot everywhere. None of them hit struck the target, though. Gary's Arcanine had moved out of range so none of the thunder shock attack had come near him. Ash sighed. 'Why were they doing this?' He was startled out of his thought when Gary recalled his Arcanine into its pokeball. Ash looked over at Gary and was shocked by what he saw. Tears streamed down Gary's face, his shoulders shaking with every sob. Slowly, he sand to his knees. For a moment Ash was too shocked to move, but was brought back to his sense's by Pikachu, who was tugging on the leg of his jeans. He walked over and knelt down next to the crying boy.
"Gary?"
Gary lifted a tear-stained face. "Why?" he asked. "Why are we fighting?"
Ash didn't know how to answer that. 'Why were they fighting? Even he didn't know.' Ash put his arm around Gary's shaking shoulders, hoping it would help calm him down a little. It helped. Gary soon stopped shaking, but silent tears still streamed down his face.
"What happened?" he asked, his voice so low Ash had to strain to hear him. "What happened to our friendship? We used to be friends. What happened?"
Ash shook his head. "I...I don't know," he answered. He felt helpless. He didn't know what to do. He looked into Gary's tear-filled eyes and was taken aback by what he saw. Pain, sorrow, loss. Things he never thought he would see in the other boy. He was always so arrogant and stuck up, but he had never seemed unhappy. But now, sitting here with his arm around Gary's shoulders, Ash realized what a lie it was. It always had been. The rude, arrogant, stuck-up Gary was just there to hide all the pain and sorrow he really felt. He was simply trying to hide his true feelings by covering them up. Ash pulled Gary a little closer to him.
"We don't have to fight," Ash said quietly.
Gary starred at the ground. 'How could Ash even think about being his friend? He had been so mean to the other boy in the past few years. Always acting so arrogant. So how could Ash forgive him?' He looked up at Ash and saw how sincere he was. 'He was willing to be friends again even after all the pain and humiliation he had put him through.' "You're...you're willing to forgive me and be my friend even after all the humiliation I put you through?"
Ash nodded. "Of course. I hate fighting with you as much as you do."
"But..." Ash cut him off. "Gary, I know you don't really hate me. Acting rude and arrogant was just a cover-up." He looked down at Gary and smiled. "We can end this fighting." Ash stood up and offered his hand to help Gary stand. Gary regarded the offered hand for a minute before taking it. Once he was standing, he just stood there. Then, he flung his arms around Ash, fresh tears streaming down his face. This time they were tears of joy.
"Thank you, Ash," he whispered.
Ash smiled as he hugged the other boy back. "Friends?" he asked.
Gary nodded. "Friends."
