B'nana!

Little Alex O'Connell is getting to the age where most children have the uncanny urge to
start walking. He now spends hours every day pulling himself onto his feet, grabbing
chairs, curtains, his parents' clothing or anything else which is suitable and within reach.
Evie has secured all the bookshelves with string, following the incident they had had just
a few days ago where Alex had nearly pulled the whole thing down onto of him in an
effort to prop himself up.

Right now Evelyn is in the kitchen, cutting up a banana for Alex. Alex loves bananas.
Rick is in the living room, sitting in a comfy armchair, reading the newspaper.
He looks up to watch Alex play with his toys.
All of a sudden, Alex freezes. He can hear Evie in the kitchen!
The little boy glares back at his father with wide eyes, dropping all he was doing.
"Nana!"
Rick puts the paper away, leans forward and gives his son a big smile. The expression on
his son's face was almost too cute to bear!
"What did you say, buddy?"
Alex immediately reacts to his father's inviting gesture and crawls up to him with great
tenacity, forgetting his toys.
"Nana!"
"Banana, Alex." Rick corrects, giggling. Alex grabs Rick's knee and makes an effort to
pull himself up. "Nnnnana!"
Alex bounces up and down eagerly, making the cutest of noises, displaying he wants to
sit in Rick's lap. Rick sees it, and hesitates for a moment.
"Alex, listen to me!" He looks at him to get his full attention. "Ba-nana!"
"Nana!"
"No, b-a-nana."
"B'nana."
Rick raises his eyebrows and energetically encourages him. "Nearly got it, son! B-a-n-a-
n-a!"
"Nana!" Alex looks confused.
Rick sighs and smiles. "Okay, pal, you win. Never mind about it for now."
He picks Alex up and perches him up his lap and calls to Evie as Alex sets to work at
examining his father's hair.
"Evie? Hurry up, love! Alex wants his nana!"
Evie calls back perplexed, "what does he want?"
"Alex is waiting for his nana! You know... banana."
"Ah right." She smirks.
"Hurry up, it's getting urgent!" he jokes, as indeed it is, because Alex is shifting about in
his lap, tugging at Rick's shirt, giving his father a look full of reproach. "Nana!!!"
Evie announces: "Nana's coming up in just one second, honey!"
Rick tickles Alex's small clumsy hands.
"Wanna go see what mum's doing?"
Alex looks as enthusiastic as ever!
"Mum mak'n nana?!"
"Yes, let's go find her!"
He places Alex on the carpet floor and, holding both his son's hands, supporting him,
they make their way towards the kitchen. Alex is exhilarated at standing on his two feet,
laughing, giggling, he proudly takes one wobbly step at a time, striding ahead of Rick but
never once letting go of his hands.
They enter the kitchen just as Evie turns round to deliver the snack.
"Alex!" She smiles down at him.
"The wait was getting unbearable" Rick explains.
The couple watch in amazement as Alex gobbles down the soft bite-sized pieces of fruit.
After finishing he beams up at his mother.
"B... a'nana!"
"Wow Alex! Clever boy, you! Rick, did you hear him?" Thrilled, she hugs her son
lovingly. Alex thoroughly enjoys the praise.
He sees his father wink. He's not quite sure what this means, but he sees the happy smiles
on both his parents' faces and knows all is well. "Baaanana."
