Summary: An alternative to the Star Wars universe

Disclaimers: I don't own Star Wars. I wish I did, but I don't. Thus, according to copyright laws as I understand it, if I make any money off of this, George Lucas can sue me for a million jillion dollars. But I'm NOT making any money, so THERE! I will, however, gladly accept any donations any of you would like to give…

DARK MIRROR

PROLOGUE

This fanfic is basically the product of some random speculating done by my brain. Unfortunately, because I'm such a geek, even the most random of my musings must have a logical explanation behind it, so I came up with this. This is almost entirely made up for the purposes of this fic, except for an itty-bitty amount from The Phantom Menace. And don't worry, though this background is written in a humorous fashion, the rest of the fic will be more serious.

OK… In my Star Wars universe, there are these things called midi-chlorians. That's what I learned from TPM. Does anybody else envision these things as little worms swimming around your cells? Anyway, there are two kinds (remember, I'm making this all up), which can basically be called the Light Midi-chlorians (Lighties), and the Dark Midi-chlorians (Cool Guys—I mean, Darkies). These midi-chlorians are what make life possible, and give sentient beings manipulation of the Force. If a sentient being wants to use the Dark Side of the Force, he will call upon the power of the Darkies; if they want to use the Light Side, they use the Lighties. With me so far?

So in my universe, the Lighties were having a blast. The Galactic Republic's Jedi used the Light Side and rejected (and even hunted, if necessary) anyone who used the Dark Side. Needless to say, the Darkies got a little ticked. So they decided that they were going to gather up strength to create the Conqueror, a being so fluent in the Dark Side that he would wash away the Jedi like sandcastles in the path of a tsunami. Yes, I know the analogy is uncanny. And since it's the Force, they could set the future up so as to make sure that he came into a position to carry out the Darkies' whims, and beat the Lighties down for generations to come!

Well, the Lighties got wind of this, and boy, were they ever mad. So they got together and communicated with the Light Side of the Force, and they looked into the future that the Darkies were creating. Finally, they came up with a plan to save the universe for the Lighties. Unfortunately, even with their plan there would be horrendous casualties, and that was if the plan went—well—according to plan. Here was their plan: at the same time that the Conqueror was born to the Dark Side, the Light Side would produce the Chosen One. He would be a boy of immense strength, with a power over the Force such as the universe had rarely seen. In addition, they would make him have ambition, and they would also give him an incredible will-power.

The ambition existed for the Chosen One to act basically as a block against the Conqueror. The Darkies had already had Darth Bane and his reforms to their order, and his restructuring specifically stated that there would only be two Sith, never more, never less. The Darkies were setting the universe up so that the when the Sith Apprentice of the time went suddenly masterless and became a Sith Master himself, he would go through several Apprentices until he chose and stayed with one—the Conqueror. The Lighties' Chosen One, however, would be found by the Master first (if all went well). And once the Chosen One's ambition overtook him, he would become the Master's Apprentice. Since there could only be one Apprentice, whoever the Master of the time turned out to be would not look any further than the Chosen One, and thus the Conqueror would never be found.

Unfortunately, this would mean that the Chosen One—the Lighties' own Chosen One!—would help the current Master in his reign of terror. Yes, the Darkies would create a Power Surge through their own Side, and nothing the Lighties could do could counter-act that portion of their plan. And so the Jedi would be virtually exterminated by their own Savior. This is where the will-power came in. No creature in the Grand History of Existence had ever turned from Dark Side to Light Side. But the incredible soul of the Chosen One would (if the plan worked). And so the Apprentice would transform himself into a Jedi and kill the Master, and the Dark Side would be defeated for generations. The Light Side would survive by the hair of its nose, and since the Light Side had neither hair nor a nose, it would be a close call indeed.

Of course, the Hunt carried out by their own Chosen One and the brief Reign of the Dark Side that followed would be a disaster unto itself. But it would be a brief Reign. That would not be true if the Conqueror became the Master's Apprentice. The Conqueror would have a strong will-power also, but he would not want to become a Jedi: he would choose to be a Sith. And so the Dark Side would rule the galaxy for at least as long as the Republic had stood, and that was the worst thing the Lighties could possibly imagine.

This was a fairly vague plan, of course, and they would have to iron out the details as the Actual Future, not the Possible Futures that they could see, unfolded. But doing so on the fly would be difficult, and the chances of the plan's success were slim. But they had to try. And try they did, and in George Lucas' universe, the Lighties pulled through. The Conqueror never came to the Master's (the Master turned out to be Darth Sidious, of course) attention, and he was simply one of quadrillions of beings who had a short life and left no mark on history.

Well, if this were all there was to it, most people would now probably say: what? I read all this for nothing? When are you going to sleep tonight, JGuy? About ten, I think, thanks for asking. Look at my author bio if you wanna know where I live.

Anyway, that's NOT all there is to the story! Because of this totally un-Lucas-authorized background info that I made up while I was lying in bed, I can now use what is perhaps the greatest weapon ever conceived by fanfic authors: What If? With this amazing power, I will now ask the question: What if the Lighties' plan didn't go according to plan, and the Chosen One went undiscovered, and it was the Conqueror that became Sidious' Apprentice? Thus begins Episode I of my Star Wars. I'd call it the Not-So-Phantom Menace, but then people would hit me. So read on! And I promise it won't be in the goofy style I used for this prologue thingie!
