Of all the people still in Clock Town in the hours before the moon falls, I think I feel the saddest for the gate guards, standing, waiting for orders to leave. And they get crushed over and over again... Especially the guard at the south gate, who says, "No! No! I must get a hold of myself! I must guard the gate until the captain's orders come..." I don't know... But anyway, these are his thoughts in the last hour of Termina.

Last Hour

"Viscen..."

"The mayor's orders are absolute!"

"So the gate guards are standing by..."

"Standing by!? Cripes!"

It's so close now...

So many nights I've admired its beauty

As a poet would, but now I realize

That it is truly ghastly--its once soft glow a lie.

I see orange eyes glow with fires of hate

On a pockmarked orb with a harsh crimson glow.

A wide grimace of evil and cruelty adorns it as it falls.

Closer and closer it comes,

Swooping like a vulture,

To steal the breath from our lungs...

Captain Viscen! Bring the orders!

Let me flee with my life!

Let me leave this miserable gate!

I don't want to run--

Not without your consent.

Bring us the orders, Captain...please...

I stand here with honor, guarding this gate.

I don't want to loose that.

My honor is more important than my life...

But I want to preserve both...

True, I have sinned,

As any imperfect man will,

And prayers seldom pass my lips

Or through my mind.

So I am unworthy to ask, but...

Grant me this.

Grant me a single act of mercy; stop it.

Or grant swift oblivion, and the courage

To wait for it.

The moon has no mercy--its fall will never cease

Without divine intervention.

Faster and faster it comes

Fear grips my heart in a vise

Please! Use your strength I didn't believe in;

Use your power that I scoffed at,

To save my wretched self.

Or spare the others,

My wife, my child...for they don't deserve death

As I do.
