Kay, This is not another story on the end of the Giver…

Kay, This is not another story on the end of the Giver….

Kathryn sat down. To most she looked calm and in control, but Mandy knew she was worried. It was her eyes that gave her away. They always had. Her eyes were the windows to her emotions. They were her only giveaways. She always called them The little windows of truth.

"Worried?" she asked.

"No, you know my job."

"What?" she inquired.

"Storyteller."

Kathryn smiled at that. She and Mandy whispered through out the rest of the ceremony about what her job would be. Finally the lady, Lily, called them up. Mandy was, as guessed storyteller. But to there surprise, they skipped Kathryn. She was confused, but didn't let that show. Instead she tilted up her head and continued the job she began as a Six. She tried to find out how many tiles where on the roof.

Three thousand-one, Three thousand two…

                  Then Lily began her speech.

"Six years ago, my brother was chosen to be the next receiver. A job so harsh, so painful so aging, that he was not able to complete it. He ran away then died somewhere. His memories changed us all. But the Giver is aging we need to pick a new. Kathryn, come here." As soon as Kathryn was on the stage she continued. "Kathryn, the honor is great, but so is the pain. If you accept this job, then you will not be able to run, to quit. If you do not want to, then you will be Released. The job will require skill, the ability to see beyond, the fitness to cope with pain and the endurance and  patience to keep with it. Can you do this?"

            Every eye was on Kathryn.

"Yes. I will do this."

The proud way she stood, the way she held her head gave the honor and truth out of her words. But if you looked into her light eyes, you would see her nervousness, unsure ness, and fear.

Lily then put her hands on Kathryn's shoulders.

"Kathryn. Thank you for your childhood."
