Disclaimer: As usual, I own nothing IaHB related.
Note: I wasn't going to write anything (Except for the commentary I sent to Mo) pertaining to the tragedy that took place on Tuesday. I was especially not going to use the IaHB characters to do it. But, then I was sitting in class today, listening as the professor gave up on lecturing and started to talk about how today is a day of mourning. Then I thought about how all those rescuers are in NYC and PENN trying to do whatever they can, even though it means risking their own life to do it. And I thought about how there wasn't a lot I could do. My only real gift is writing, and even with that sometimes it seems questionable. So, then I thought about that for a while. And finally, I thought about how when the Oklahoma City Bombing and Columbine happened, famous cartoonists like Charles Shultz (creator of the 'Peanuts' characters) and others would always manage to express their feelings- grief, anger, etc. through their work during horrible times. I realized then that perhaps that was what I wanted to do.
My fic is a drabble (ironically, my first attempt at one). Keep in mind, a drabble is a 100 word story. It is just one short scene that I feel, summarizes a lot of the feelings that most New Yorkers, and Americans in general, have right now. In keeping with the cartoonist's tradition, I used the IaHB characters because they are so familiar to us and we all love them. See, the whole idea behind using the characters we love is that the message will mean so much more to us because it seems as if they too, have been touched by this tragedy. This is the only fic I will be writing about this tragedy. Please read this and let me know what you think.
The name of this fic came from a newspaper headline the day after the attack.
Without Further Ado:
They were all there: Val, Tyler, Jamie, Hank, Alex, Brooke. Even Caitie and Nick were there. They were all looking up above.
Val cried softly as she watched Hank and Alex lower the flag just outside the station to half-mast. "All those people.........," she cried, burying her head in Tyler's shoulder. He put a comforting arm around her.
Jamie's hands were tightened in fists of anger, his jaw clenched in emotion. His mouth was set in a grim line of frustration. A tear slowly slipped down his cheek.
"Never forgotten," he whispered, watching the flag wave proudly in the breeze.
My heart and thoughts go out to the victims and their families of the terrorism that we all experienced on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001. I will continue to keep you, and everyone else, in my prayers. You will not be forgotten.
