Disclaimer: I do not own Outlaw Star

You realize we know doddely squat about Gene's mom??? I mean we always hear about how Gene's dad died but never about how Gene's mom died. This is what this story is about.

The moon shone brightly over Gene's house questioning the exsistance of something living. Gene watched from the attic and counted the stars. "One two three four five six. Six stars out tonight. I'm six." he said to know one in particular.

"Hey kiddo."

"Charlie." he whispered his older brother's name beckoning him nearer. "When mom get's better I'm going to show her this."

"I don't know if she will get better Gene."

"She will."

Charlie frowned, his face lighter by the moonlight. "Don't count on it."

"But I already did."

"Huh?"

"I counted the stars."

"You can count now?"

"Only to ten."

"That's great."

"Yeah."

"Are you sleeping up here tonight."

"Nah I'm coming down now."

"Cool kid I'm coming too."

"Great Charlie."

The brothers went to their rooms and fell asleep.

"Don't wake him dad, not for this mom wouldn't have wanted this."

"You're right I'll let Gene sleep."

Gene snored on unaware of the conversation around him. An hour later he woke with a yawn and climbed down the stairs. "CHARLIE, DAD, MOM!!! WHERE ARE YOU GUYS???" he yelled.

Gene walked into the kitchen and saw his dad and his brother sitting at the table sobbing together. He had seen Charlie cry. Many times. Like the time Turno, their pet dog died. But his dad never cried. Even when mom told him that she had cancer, that she was going to die. "Daddy." Gene said quietly.

"Come here." he said between sobs.

Gene got close to his father. "She's gone son. Your mom is in a better place. She's an angel now."

"When is she coming back?"

"She can't come back Gene."

Tears were welling up in Gene's face. "Why not?"

"Because God needs her."

"BUT I NEED HER TOO!!!" Gene screamed and sobbed in his fathers shirt.

That day rolled on shortly with the absencence of his mother Gene felt lost and confused. The funeral was that Friday, and athough Gene didn't come he saw the globs of people crying in his living room. Charlie told him he didn't have to go down, and he didn't.

He stayed in his room the whole day and tried to wipe the inncident from his memory. He was succesful. Except for the anniversary of that date, where you can see Gene is his room staring out the window. And if you listen hard enough, you can here him call his mom.

Just a note, Charlie does not exist in the series therefore he is MY creation. Don't steal him. :-D.
