A Child Lost Forever -- Chapter Five: Dream
~Chapter Five: Dream

Duo woke suddenly, cold and shivering. "Heero, where are you?" he called, for Heero had indeed disappeared and a void, black and dead, had taken his place. "Heero?!" but Heero did not appear, nor did he respond and Duo felt the old fear returning, closing in an icy fist around his heart.

He left me.

"No, not again. Don't leave me alone... please, no," Duo whispered,

(go on, baby, cry,)

and three tears slipped from his eyes and tracked silently down his face.

"Where's your buddy, kid?"

"Aw, did poor wittle Duo-wuo lose his friend?"

The mocking voices arose from the dark, familiar tones, familiar voices, familiar demons, echoing in his head, returning always to torment him.

"Can't you ever leave me alone?!" Duo cried.

"He's not gone, you know," Kali said.

"Where is he?" Duo asked, looking at where he thought the sky should be.

Kali laughed. "He's dead!"

"No!! That's not true!! You're lying!!" Duo said, knowing even as he said it that it was true, Heero was dead, and it was from the be'lia, from him. He put his hands over his eyes. Maybe i'll wake up and this will all be a dream, a nightmare, i couldn't have killed him, i --

"Goodbye, Duo... Goodbye, Duo... Goodbye, Duo..." Heero's voice, at last, rang out, subduing the demons.

Duo looked up. "Heero? You're not dead! What do you mean 'goodbye'?"

The echo of Heero's words continued, being joined by Nancy's voice, "Goodbye, Duo... Goodbye, Duo... Goodbye, Duo..."

They are leaving me. "Please don't! Stay with me! Don't abandon me! Don't go... it's dark... not in the dark... dark is when they come... don't leave me... not until morning... not until light... don't go..." Duo whimpered, sinking to the floor.

"Goodbye, Duo..."

"Is he dead?" Donovan asked.

"I think so," Brennan replied.

"Finally. I was beginning to get sick of that stupid brat." said Kali.

Duo didn't hear them. He was already slipping off into another tormented dream.

(dang man, what you be?)

i be Death.
