Why you shouldn't let your pets out at night!

I stop, frozen.
What was that?
My head turns around letting my eyes gaze out over the open plain. The empty sky looks down on me but little else.
I blink before going back to scratching at the ground with a white clad paw for what it was I had been looking for.
There it was again.
I try to shake it off but the prickling feeling down the back of my neck makes me look up once more to try and spot something. Tail twitches behind me anxiously but I just tell myself it's nothing and turn to the ground again and go about scratching once more.
Ah.
Just what I was looking for.
My head lowers and turns slightly so as I can naw at the tasty root better so as to remove it from its placing and take it back to my home. The sound of my continual chewing at the root seems to hammer against the inside of my head against the silence of the dawning sky but I just continue to try and ignore it.
After all, what would be out at this time?
The nights dangers are going home to roost and the days are beating the sleep from their eyes. I should be safe.
I jump what feels to be a million feet into the air as a snapping sound catches me by surprise.
Standing poised I look around purple ears twitching atop my head listening out for the slightest sound. I chew on a small amount of root that still sits within my mouth as cautious crimson eyes look out between the thick bushy grass for any movement.
Still nothing.
I shake my head and look back to the root again.
Maybe I should just get it out as quickly as I can and go home to my burrow. Yes, that would be the right idea.
My teeth go back to nawing at the plant root though this time quicker and more vigerous than before.
Tinkle.
I blink move to turn my head to face behind me.
Cream coloured lightning covers my vision as if it were to hit me.
Pain.
Red drapes everything I see and blackness quickly builds up around it.
My head aches though I don't know why and a single shudder runs down my body. Something seems to be putting weight upon me as I don't seem able to move.
I try to speak but little more than a weak cry leaves my throat, but dosnt pass through my lips as everything blacks out.

Wonderfully happy story, no? ^.^;
