December 31, A.C. 198 - Sank Palace
~3 hours before the New Year's party~
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday Professor, happy birthday tooo youuuu!" Duo practiced. Heero just... stared blankly.
"Whaaat?!" the ex-pilot asked. "It *is* a party, after all. You're supposed to sing that on somebody's birthday!"
Heero finally spoke. "...Birthday?" The thought of a Scientist having such a 'normal' thing had never occurred to him. Duo sighed, running his fingers through his bangs.
"Mou, Heero! Even *they* had to be kids once, ya know."
Heero didn't move or speak. Duo had the distinct impression of hearing the gears in his buddy's head grind slowly to a halt.
~30 minutes into the party~
Apparently, Relena had discovered the wonders of 20th century gaming... the band was currently working through the highlights of the Chrono Cross soundtrack, and doing a decent job. Professor G absently wondered if they were going to attempt the "Pong" soundtrack... a daring maneuver which no band had ever successfully pulled off.
"Saaa, Professor! How've ya been?" the voice of his once-employee caroled out.
The old man turned to watch Duo lope on over. The braided teenager held out a small box. "Here, take it, man! Happy birthday!"
The tag read simply, 'To G, From 02'. The scientist chuckled at the joke and gently shook the package before holding it up to his ear. He studiously ignored Duo's raspberry and tore away the wrapping paper.
