The Birthday (Part 4)

Neelix was doing his best to help Seven of Nine repair the shuttle.
He kept looking over at Tom.  He was worried about him.  Tom wasn't doing well at all.  He was pale, his breathing was very labored and he kept drifting in and out of consciousness.  A few times he heard Tom call out for B'Elanna.  He felt sorry for Tom, but there was nothing that he could do for him until they were able to contact Voyager.

When Kathryn Janeway walked into the mess hall, she didn't realize that anyone else was there until she turned on the lights.  That's when she saw B'Elanna.  "I think that you should get some rest", the Captain said.  B'Elanna turned around and said, "I couldn't sleep.  All I kept doing was thinking about Tom.  He's everywhere.  I tried our quarters, but he was there.  I went to Engineering, but he was there too.  I went to the Bridge and to Sickbay, but he's there too.  I finally ended up here.  He's here too, but there's only so many places you can go on a starship."  She smiled slightly.  Janeway understood.  "I know B'Elanna", she said, "We'll find them…him".  She put a reassuring hand on B'Elanna's shoulder and didn't say anything, while her half-human, half-Klingon chief engineer sat there crying softly.

"I've gotten communications back online", said Seven, "I will attempt to contact Voyager."  "Tom", said Neelix, "did you hear that?  Voyager will be here in no time and then the doctor can take care of you."  Neelix tried to act cheerful, but he didn't know if Voyager would get the message on time, let alone get it at all.  "Yeah Neelix," Tom said, weakly, "I heard."

          "Captain to the Bridge"

"On my way Mr. Kim", said the Captain, "B'Elanna, it could be something important."  They walked quickly to the Bridge.  "Mr. Kim, report", said Janeway.  "We've received a distress call", Harry said, "and it has a Starfleet signature."
