Steel

Steel

*: This is a direct quote from Matchbox 20's song, which is called "Last Beautiful Girl".

Note: In the beginning of this poem, all I intended to do was to maybe make a poem that described simply a fight, and that would be all. The beginning is more like a poem, and the rest…well, I don't know exactly what that is… It kind of took a life of it's own for the rest. This particular piece happens to be especially confusing, and it may not make sense the whole time. I contradict myself a lot in this poem, like how I imply that the character (which is a girl) is immortal and yet can die… Hmm… I don't know where that came from…

I don't really know if this can even be classified as esca-fanfiction, because there's no mentioning of any names whatsoever. However, this could go ok with my other story, Shadows. Same theme basically, with lots of mental turmoil and stuff, but Shadows is considerably less confusing. The guy the character is talking about is supposed to be Dilandau, but he's pretty OOC in this story, or at least at the end.

Disclaimer: I don't own matchbox 20 or that line I used in the poem. I don't own Escaflowne either.

Clash of steel

Whir of blades

Falling blood

Then I wake…

Looming over me

Your face is hidden in shadow.

Smirking, you draw your sword

Of finest tempered steel.

It glints sinisterly by the light of the bleached moon

Saying to me

"I am your doom…"

Two lightning bolts of silver

A resounding clang as they meet.

Then, the struggle is over.

My sword is cast aside

I've no defenses left.

Your blade presses into my neck

I bite my lip in pain

Blood seeps out of the wound I've been dealt

You have bested me yet again.

There's no turning back now

End this now, forevermore.

I wish to fight no longer

I tire of this eternal war

Waged between us

For I am invariably the loser.

And now,

Now, I shall finally rest

From this continuous horror

To which I attest

End it now!

End it now,

And free me!

But…your sword hesitates

No further does it delve into my flesh

No more crimson blood does it draw

Your blade goes back in its sheath

Curse you for all of your mercy!

Curse your sudden regret!

Curse the flicker of compassion in your eyes!

Curse you for all of times I have wept

Waiting for this day,

For release!

You withdraw, backing up slowly.

Oh, if only you knew

I'm suffering much more while alive

Than I would if I were in my in the realm of the dead!

I assure you, it is very much true.

I crumple to the floor

In ruins

Like the once magnificent empire of Rome

Like Greece,

Like Tenochtitlán

Like everything else that was*

And shall never be again

I've broken down,

And wordlessly cry.

Oh god, will it never end?

Then, arms circle me,

Comforting,

Soothing,

Warming me with their presence.

I look up.

It is you

Fueled by anger and malice

My arms beat against you,

Pummeling you with blows.

Yet still you hold me.

I tire so quickly

And slump against you,

Exhausted,

Defeated,

A warrior no more.

Still you say nothing

As I rest in your embrace.

And somehow,

In that strange, magical way of yours,

I am free.

I am free

Not by death,

Nor by life.

Just by you…

The reign of steel is over

The cycle has been broken

And now, suddenly I smile up at you,

Something I have not done for millenniums.
