Beginning Friendships
" DUO!" A little boy yelled at a tree. He had deep green eyes and brown hair that covered one of his eyes. He glared at the tall tree, giggles could be heard from within its green leaves. " DUO! Mrs. Aspen said not to climb the trees!"
" Mrs. Aspen, Mrs. Aspen." A small head popped out. The boy had bright blue eyes and brown hair that fell into a braid. " Trowa, when will you break the rules?" Trowa glared even harder at the boy in the tree.
" He won't until pigs grow wings and fly." A girl with dark brown hair and brown eyes said behind Trowa. The two boys gasped. This girl was usually known as the one who would never talk and was the toughest one to defeat in their mock battles. She wore a plain white blouse and a blue pleated skirt, the uniform for the girls in the school. She wore her hair in a ponytail with a small green bow at the base. " I suggest that you get down, Monkey Boy, or Mrs. Aspen will give you detention again." She turned and left.
" Did you hear that? She called me 'Monkey Boy'." Duo dropped down.
" That is an insult, Duo." Trowa sighed.
" Oh."
The two ran on to class. The class they were in was a class size of only eight kids. Treize was the oldest, thirteen. Diana, the only girl in the class, was the youngest, ten. Milliardo, or Zechs, was twelve. Wufei, Quatre, Trowa, Duo and Heero were all eleven. Their class was mainly taught on battle techniques and instructions of how to pilot a mobile suit. After class the children usually had mock battles to test them selves, but Diana would trot off to a willow tree by a lake. There she took out a sketchbook and pencil that she hid in a knot in the tree and she would proceed to draw to her hearts delight.
On one of these occasions, she sat and drew not noticing the shadows that loomed over her shoulder. She felt a strange irritation and turned to see Treize and Zechs looking over her shoulder. Heero was a little ways behind them. Diana jumped up and held her book protectively against her chest.
" Don't worry, we just wanted to see what you were drawing." Treize said. She wasn't moved. " Can we take a look?" He stretched out his hand. Diana took a step back and tripped over a stone and plunged into the lakes ice-cold waters. When she righted herself she found Treize and Zechs looking through her book. She ignored Heero's helping hand and dashed into the school building. Duo, Quatre, Wufei, and Trowa saw and they attacked the two older boys. Heero grabbed the book and pencil and followed the hurt Diana.
Diana buried her face into her pillow and cried. " No one was supposed to look at my book." She wept. " It was supposed to be secret."
" Hello?" A muffled voice called through her keyhole.
" GO AWAY!" She shouted.
" Not until I give this to you." The voice replied. Does this boy want an early death or what? She asked herself. She opened her door to find Heero standing there with her sketchbook and pencil. Or what. " Here." He held them out to her.
" I can't. It was supposed to be a secret and now that secret is out." She looked at it pitifully. " I failed my mission."
" It is still a secret to some." He said and again pushed the book to her.
" Thanks, but I don't want it anymore." She shook her head. " You keep it."
" Thanks." Heero sounded happy. He flipped through it and closed it gently. " I know this sounds strange, but this is what I dream of."
" The pictures?" He nodded. " Cool. Maybe we share the same world and it was never a secret to you."
" Maybe." Heero smiled. That day, Heero lost Treize and Zechs as friends and adopted Duo, Wufei, Quatre, and Trowa as friends. Diana joined their group and they lived, for the time being, quite happily.
