ROSES OF YESTERDAY

* * *

It's easy
to forget yourself,
to lose yourself
in memories
of the past
when you possess
eternity.

The stars are under my feet
and the world is upside down.
Everything is changing
so fast
that when I blink,
all has become alien to me.
Wherever I go,
I am running,
hiding,
escaping...

Until I can no longer find myself.

I have forever been
yesterday's child.
The future does not agree with me,
and the present
shows no evidence of emotion.
I exist
as a remembrance,
and what purpose does that serve?

I have yet to discover the key.

How can you find yourself
when you do not remember your own face?
All I see
when I peer
into the looking glass
is nothingness,
emptiness, space...
It's no wonder
that I'm beginning
to believe
that this image is me.

You
were the one.
Who taught me my art.
My craft.
You who tore my heart to pieces
in one breath,
one glance.

You steal a glance at me, smiling
But isn't that all we do?
Stolen moments, stolen bliss.
But I know what you fear.
I know the darkness of you mind,
Because I touched it,
Felt it wrap itself over my fingers,
And reveled in it.

Is this how we live?
Forever lost.
Forever longing.
The pieces are torn and scattered
A jigsaw, a puzzle-knot.

And I know
even as you touch me
that your heart
screams for her

And
that there is no winning
in love.
