Prompts: Lies

Whumpee: Kuroba Kaito

Song: "Look What You Made Me Do", Taylor Swift

"I hate that Kaitou Kid!" Aoko huffed as she sat down in her seat next to Kaito's. "Tousan was away all night again! He promised he'd have a nice dinner with me, but because of that stupid thief, we didn't!"

Kaito looked at Aoko, feeling the familiar twist of guilt inside his stomach. "I'm sorry," he said abruptly.

Aoko glanced at Kaito. "Sorry? For what? It's not like you're Kid."

I am, Kaito thought, but he didn't voice the thoughts out loud. "No, I'm not," he agreed. A lie. "I'm just… sorry that you didn't get to have dinner with your father."

"Ohhhh," Aoko breathed out. "You don't need to apologize for that. Next time, could you come over?"

"I'll try," Kaito said, but he knew that was a lie as well. After all, I'm Kaitou Kid. I can't drop out of my own heist to have dinner with you.

Aoko smiled happily, and the guilt came back stronger. I have to lie to her so often because I'm Kid… And I hate this, so, so much.

"Aww, Kaitooooo," Aoko complained over the phone. "Why didn't you come to dinner tonight? You promised you would!"

"Sorry, Aoko," Kaito said apologetically. "Something came up and I couldn't hold off on it, so I had to do it!" That's technically not a lie, is it?

"You and tousan, both making empty promises," Aoko huffed out, annoyed.

"I'll make it up to you!" Kaito said quickly, despite not knowing how he'd do that. "What do you want?"

"I suppose dinner isn't a satisfactory answer?" Aoko asked, voice dripping with displeasure.

"Dinner's fine tomorrow!" Kaito exclaimed.

Even though they were only talking on the phone, Kaito could almost see Aoko roll her eyes. "Alright, alright. You better show up, Bakaito."

"I will, Ahoko," Kaito promised. He only hoped that this time, he wouldn't break it.

Kaito managed to keep his promise that time, somehow, but the next time he wasn't so lucky.

It was supposed to be a quick heist, in and out, and then he'd drop by Aoko's while Nakamori dealt with the paperwork.

Then he got injured.

He headed to the Blue Parrot instead and let Jii take care of his wounds, fussing over him. Kaito leaned his head against the bar and let his eyes flutter shut. Maybe I can just take a quick nap…

The ringing of a phone caught Kaito's attention. His eyes shot open and he reached around for his phone before Jii eventually slid it across the bar countertop to him. Kaito uttered a quick "Thank you" before picking it up.

"Bakaito!" Aoko's voice shouted at him.

Kaito froze. "Ah, Aoko…"

"Where are you?" Aoko continued shouting.

Kaito swallowed. "Ah… At the Blue Parrot… I accidentally hurt myself performing a magic trick so Jii-chan's patching me up."

"Are you telling the truth?" Aoko asked suspiciously.

"I am," Kaito whispered.

Aoko huffed. "Alright then. Hope you get better."

Kaito let the phone fall from his hand onto the countertop. He had lied again, and as always…

It hurt.
