Upon entering his room, Regulus shut the doors closed behind him and immediately went for the direction of his bed. Once he finally reached it, he sat down on the edge and heaved out a long sigh. Content washed over him like ocean waves as he felt the soft mattress beneath him. Using his hands for support, he carefully leaned on his back and tilted his head to look up. Onyx eyes meeting the dull gray paint of the ceiling, a small frown grew visible on his lips as he recalled what happened earlier on.
He had no idea what had gotten over him, it wasn't like him to make a sudden outburst. Was it anger? He was sure it was. He didn't know what was happening to him, in fact, he wasn't feeling like himself at all and the only thing that he could blame it for is his lack of sleep.
For the past few days, he would stay up at night, always staring blankly at the walls with his mind filled with thoughts that continuously ran in his head, making him unable to fall asleep and dealing with tons of headaches. And to top it all off, he had to hear his mother yap away about marriage, making him feel all the more worse than it already is.
Maybe I should just sleep it off. He thought.
Laying down on the bed, he closed his eyes and did his best in concentrating on dozing off. But just a few minutes in with him trying, a loud knock from the door came and interrupted him. Two, no, three— there were three knocks that were made in total.
He assumed that it was his mother outside, wanting to talk to him about what had transpired earlier in the dining room and turned on his side, then grabbed a pillow lying around to cover his ears, choosing to ignore it. He wasn't feeling well, and having to hear his mother lecture him of what he shouldn't and should have done wasn't exactly what he wanted at the moment.
However when he had expected to hear another knock, he was met with a deafening silence. That was odd. Sitting back up, he tossed the pillow to the side and glanced at the door. If that was his mother standing outside his room, then she would have called his name, which she had always done so in the past to alert him of her presence. But there was none. And knowing his mother, she would have knocked at least a few more times before giving up. It wasn't a really well known fact, but there were times when he used to disagree with his mother growing up and after their shared arguments, would shut himself in his room and refused to open for anyone. So it was rather strange.
Wanting to investigate who had mysteriously knocked on his door, he stood up from his bed and headed towards it. Grabbing the knob and twisting it, he opened the door and looked around, finding no one outside— or so he thought. Before closing the door, he trailed his eyes downwards and was met with the sight of a little creature standing before him. With a bulbous nose and bat-like ears sticking out, standing in a crouched stance, its bloodshot eyes had stared back at him. It was none other than their house elf, Kreacher.
"Master Regulus" The elf said before bowing.
Folding his arms across his chest, Regulus leaned against the door frame. "What do you want?" He curtly asks.
He didn't mean to be a bit snippy but he wasn't exactly a patient one when he was not in the mood, so he urged the elf to get on with it and the elf seemed to understand and continued.
"The master has ordered Kreacher to give the gift to Master Regulus. The master told Kreacher to give it immediately, that is why he is here"
"A gift?" Regulus' brows furrowed. "What gift?"
The elf in turn had only nodded. Lifting his wrinkled hands up, Kreacher snapped his fingers and suddenly, a small green box appeared in mid-air. Reaching his hand out, the box swiftly dropped and landed on his palm. Upon receiving it, he briefly looked at the box before he turned his focus back on Kreacher, who was standing there just seemingly awaiting an order from him.
He simply waved his hand to dismiss the elf. "You may go now," He says.
And like what he did earlier, Kreacher gave a bow before quickly disappearing into thin air with a pop.
Going back inside the room and closing the door, Regulus sat on his bed and stared at the box that was placed on his lap, examining it and contemplating. His father was not one who typically gave him gifts unless it was a special occasion, usually it was his mother who did all the gift giving, just what could it be that his father wanted to give to him? According to Kreacher, the gift was to be given to him immediately.
Curious to see what the box's contents were, he took off the lid. Peering inside, he was greeted by a tiny folded note lying atop the object that was covered up with a green wrapping. Taking the note, he unfolded it and began to read.
It's a bit late to give you this, it's been more than a year since you have graduated and I could have never been more proud of you. I apologize for not giving you anything in advance for I could not find the right time. I thought about what I could possibly give you, I wanted you to have the best after all. And so after a while, I thought it best that I give you something that was passed down into our family. Something more appropriate than any gift. I hope that you find it to your liking.
— Father
Putting the note aside once he had finished reading, he glanced back down to the box and in doing so, his eyes widened like the size of saucers at what he had found inside. Resting atop the box cushion was a time turner and not just any time turner, it was the one that belonged to his father. Taking the time turner out, he carefully examined it. It was light and was silver in color, it took on the form of a seemingly ordinary old pocket watch with a chain attached to it but unlike any other pocket watches, it had an hourglass in the middle instead of hands and etched on to its back was the Black family crest.
Passed on by his great great grandfather, Phineas Nigellus Black, it was a prized treasure; One out of three family heirlooms that had been passed down to the separate branches of the Black family for generations. Two being a ring and a pendant in which the ring had been passed on to his cousin, Narcissa's family, the pendant to a distant branch and of course the Time-turner which was passed down to his father.
He could remember vividly that when he was a young boy, he had once wandered into his father's office and went to his father's desk to open a secret drawer, where he first discovered the time turner inside. He didn't know what it was and of course, being the ever curious five year old child that he was, had taken it from the drawer and decided to play around with it. It was a funny memory, he remembered how his father scolded him for playing with it and had forbidden him from entering the office without permission afterwards, making him unable to see the time turner ever again; That was, until now.
Dangling the time turner on the tips of his fingers, he looked at it more intently. Although it was beautiful, it was antiquated. And he couldn't help but wonder, did it work? He knows he shouldn't use it, but it wouldn't hurt to try testing it, would it? The time turner was old and it probably hasn't been used in so long, having a broken gift would just be worthless.
Glancing at the wall clock in his bedroom, he soon turned his focus back on the time turner, about to give it a try. Putting his finger over the hourglass, he began by turning it in a clockwise direction. He turned it at least three times before closing his eyes, waiting for a minute to pass by to see whether or not when he opened them, he would find himself in another place. But much to his dismay, nothing had happened.
He looked up at the time on the wall clock of his room and frowned. It was still the same. Weird.
He stared back at the time-turner, brows furrowed. Why didn't it work? Should he have turned it a few more times? Shaking his head,he tried again but this time, he turned the hourglass seven times and once more, had closed his eyes after, hoping that this time he would be transported into another time. He waited and waited, yet nothing. He was still in his room, sitting on his bed and holding the time-turner in his hand.
This is just shite. He thought.
Deciding to give up, he was about to toss the time-turner back in the box when he suddenly began feeling nauseous. His vision suddenly turned blurry and hazy as the room started moving around him. And before he could make any sense of what exactly was happening to him, he fell faint and collapsed onto the floor.
Vision turning black, he quickly descended into the pit of darkness.
August 28 1994
Luna walked along silently on a dirt path in the outskirts of St. Ottery Catchpole. With searing hot weather and no breeze blowing by, it was an unbearable day to be in, but that didn't stop her from going up on one of the many hills around the area. It was the last few days of summer vacation before school started again. Bored and having nothing to do besides tend to the garden and help her father with his articles, she decided to take a walk and do a little search for the creatures that dwelled near the hills and trees. Her father had mentioned seeing smoglings around, smoglings were quite common during the summer so when she heard her father saying he had seen them somewhere nearby, she thought she used the right opportunity to find them.
Coming across a small downtrodden river bridge, she crossed over and continued on to walk on the path. With her spectrespecs on, she looked around as she went, passing by tall trees and bushes. So far, there was no sign of the said creatures she was looking for, only seeing a few squirrels and birds up in the trees, chirping away. It felt hot but she wasn't the one to give up and thus continued to walk further down into the grove of trees.
Squeak!
Her ears suddenly perked up and quickly, she turned her head over to the sound, something had flitted by and caught her eye. Could it be a smogling? Smoglings were small fuzzy ball creatures that dwelled near trees and bushes, and they often made squeaking noises. Eyes roaming around for the creature, she saw that it went over to the right where there were tall bushes.
"Come back, I won't harm you" She called out and without hesitation, followed the creature.
The smogling was pretty fast, going through thick bushes and past several other trees. She chased it everywhere it went and it was in that moment, when the creature vanished behind a very tall bush that she squirmed her way through and ended up seeing a person, a boy more likely, lying unconscious in the middle of the grove of trees.
Taking out her wand from her pocket, she slowly proceeded to walk over to the person. Once she got near, she checked to see if there were any signs of bruising or injuries on the boy. The latter, upon observation, was someone who is no older than her. He looked about seventeen or eighteen, give or take, wearing a long sleeved black turtleneck with trousers and a pair of the same black colored dress shoes. What was most interesting though was that Luna had noticed him clutching some sort of silver pocket watch in his hands.
It was rather odd. She thought. There were no signs of bruising or injuries, so where did this person come from? He didn't look like a muggle either or at least, that's what she had guessed. Well, it would be just better to ask the boy now, wouldn't it?
After looking around and making sure that there were no other people besides her and the unconscious boy, she knelt down beside him then pointed her wand on his chest and quietly whispered under her breath.
"Rennervate"
Once she uttered the word, a flash of brilliant red colored light then appeared from the tip of her wand. The charm she casted had worked only a few seconds later, with the boy groaning and slowly regaining consciousness.
Luna observed as his eyes slowly fluttered open. It took a while for the boy to fully awaken himself from his unconscious state, groaning in pain as he moved his body. But once he was back to the state of consciousness, Luna, still wearing her spectrespecs and with no hesitation, extended her hand out for a handshake to the boy who had just awakened. Her blue eyes underneath meeting with the other's own onyx eyes.
"Hello"
