Heather is a young doe in this story, perhaps eight or nine. Just want to make sure I avoid any confusion! :)

Heather smiled. It was a lovely day. The sun was bright and warm on her back, the clouds danced across the sky, and a soft breeze rustled her fur. She began skipping. It just felt like the right thing to do on such a nice afternoon. She stopped as she saw something out of the corner of her eye. She gasped. There was a lovely field of flowers. She'd never seen anything like it in Nick Hollow before. There were all sorts of flowers and colors. It looked like a rainbow planted in the ground, swaying in the wind.

Suddenly, out of the woods, a large grey wolf came out. Heather was startled, but it looked friendly as it said, "Good afternoon, little rabbit. Where are you going today?"

"Hello," Heather replied. "I'm going to Mr. Elric's farm and bringing him some of Mother's bread."

"That's a wonderful thing to do," the wolf said, smiling a large, toothy smile. "But look over there, have you seen those flowers?" He waved a paw toward the field Heather had just noticed.

"Yes," Heather nodded. "I was just admiring them."

"Why don't you go pick some?" the wolf suggested. "I'm sure Mr. Elric would love to have a beautiful bouquet at his window."

Heather smiled. "That's a wonderful idea! I'll go pick him some right now." She set down her basket and ran over to the field. The field looked even prettier up close. She picked one and smelled it. It smelled so delicious. She picked another, and another, concentrating on nothing but finding the prettiest and best flowers for Mr. Elric. Finally, when she had a large armful of flowers, she remembered Mr. Elric and decided it was time to go on. As she resumed her way, she noticed that the wolf had gone. She wondered where it had went. But oh well. It must have gotten tired of watching her, she thought.

After a short time of walking and smelling the flowers she carried, she reached Mr. Elric's farm. She went over and knocked on the door. There was no answer. She frowned and pushed the door open. The room was empty, but there was a musty, dirty kind of smell in the room.

All of a sudden, the wolf she had met earlier came out from another room in the house. He didn't look at all friendly, now. He had a cruel, hungry smile on his face. Saliva dripped from his open mouth as he stalked toward her. "Glad you showed up," he sneered at her. "Now I'll get two lunches!" Heather ducked and screamed as he sprang toward her.

Heather shot upright in her bed, expecting to feel the sharp teeth and claws on her any moment. Slowly the dream faded away and she looked around, realizing that she wasn't at Mr. Elric's house, but her own safe house, in her bed. There were no wolves here, she thought, trying to urge the dream away. No wolves in all of Nick Hollow, in fact.

She closed her eyes and tried to go back to sleep, but every time she shut them all she saw were the wolf's fangs closing in on her. Her eyes darted open again. There was no use trying.

She slipped out of bed and padded out of her and Picket's room, down the hall to her parent's room. She tapped Mother on the shoulder and Mother woke up at once. She smiled at Heather, realizing at once what had happened. Whenever Heather had these sort of dreams she would come to Mother. Heather supposed that Mother was used to it, because every time she just invited Heather into bed with her. This time was no different.

Mother pulled the blanket up, inviting Heather into the warm place beneath. Heather squeezed in next to her and closed her eyes. Here was where she felt safe. Safe from nightmares, safe from wolves, safe from every kind of terrors. Mother began to sing softly and Heather sighed and snuggled in deeper next to her. Soon she was asleep, with no more nightmares. Safe.

Prompt: Retell a classic fairytale.

This was fun to write. I had to think of various fairy tales before I hit on this one, though. It took me about twenty minutes of thinking (and googling :D) to think of it. :)
