Prompt: Spark

Shiho had first met Shinichi when he was in high school. Shiho, despite being in the same age group as him, had already graduated college in America and was now working as a scientist in her home country, Japan. Shinichi was a detective, despite only being a teenager, and a well respected one as well. Shiho had been called in for advice related to a case, and that was how she met Shinichi and it all began.

Shiho had always known that her boyfriend was not exclusive. At one point, Shinichi had taken Shiho to a nice cafe, paid for all that she ordered, then explained polyamory to her. He told her that even if he were dating another person at the same time, he would still love her just as much. He wouldn't choose favorites, because he loved equally. Then he asked if she was okay with him potentially starting other romantic relationships in the future.

She was.

They stayed like that, dating only each other, for the next few years, even after Shinichi graduated and they moved in together. Then Shiho was called to America for a research project that would take months. Sadly, the two of them said their goodbyes with the promise of calling each other each day, as long as they weren't busy solving crimes or making new scientific discoveries.

And that was when Shinichi started dating Kuroba Kaito.

Shiho had found out on a phone call.

The phone call had started off normal, catching each other up on their lives, then Shinichi paused and said, "I have something important to tell you."

"Hmm?" Shiho looked up from her fingernails. They were starting to grow long; she would cut them after this call.

"Well, remember when I explained polyamory to you?" Shinichi asked.

Shiho set her hands down on her lap. "I remember," she said slowly. "Did you…"

"Get another partner?" Shinichi finished. He nodded. "I did." Before Shiho could say anything else, Shinichi rushed on. "His name is Kuroba Kaito, and he's a magician. One of the best in the world. He's sweet and amazing and charming at times, when he really tries." He laughed a little. "He's just… a great person, Shiho."

Shiho smiled lightly, enjoying the way that Shinichi talked about this Kuroba Kaito person. "Well, he seems to make you happy," she said. "And that's good enough for me."

Shinichi gave her a startled look. "Really?"

Shiho nodded. "Of course. What did you expect me to say? That you can't date him? Because you absolutely can. I'd like to meet him when I come back."

Shinichi smiled. "Of course you can."

Soon, the call ended and Shiho got up to get the nail cutters. As she slowly cut them, she began to wonder about Kuroba Kaito. Shinichi was never the type to be interested in magicians, with the exception of one who doubled as a criminal: Kaitou Kid. But, Shiho thought, how stupid would it be for Kaitou Kid to be named Kuroba Kaito?

Kaito had to admit, he had been pining over Shinichi for a while. However, he knew the other man was taken by a lovely young lady named Shiho. Kaito would never do anything to ruin their relationship, especially since, from what he saw on heists, they were deeply in love with each other.

How he ended up dating Shinichi as well… It started with a series of coincidences.

Kaito had been out shopping with Aoko. Her girlfriend, Akako, had invited her to a formal dance she had won the tickets to in a lottery. Kaito thought she had actually just magicked them into existence, but Akako denied it, so Kaito didn't press the issue. Aoko wanted Kaito's help to choose clothes, so the two of them stood in a clothing shop, Aoko holding a dress in each hand, comparing the two.

"Which one do you think looks better?" Aoko asked Kaito.

Kaito thought for a moment, then said, "The blue one."

Aoko looked at them a bit longer, then sighed miserably. "But the green one looks so good as well…"

"You asked for my opinion," Kaito shrugged. "Not my problem if you ignore it."

Aoko punched him lightly in the shoulder, the dress still in hand. Kaito yelped and dramatically jumped back. "You broke my arm!"

Aoko laughed, hanging up the dresses and approaching him, a mischievous grin on her face. "Oh, I'll kill ya!"

Then the door busted open and the two of them jolted back as they stared at the panting detective in the doorway. "Finally, I get here before there's a dead body," he muttered, before locking eyes with Aoko. "You're going to have to come to the station with me-"

"Kudo Shinichi," Kaito breathed out, and the detective turned to stare at him. Shinichi's eyes widened as he seemed to realize that Kaito's arm was, in fact, not broken. His gaze turned to Aoko and saw her lack of a weapon.

"You weren't serious," Shinichi said flatly.

"We weren't," Aoko agreed.

Shinichi turned a thoughtful gaze to Kaito. "You look familiar…"

Feeling like his heart was about to rip itself out of his chest, Kaito quickly held his hands out in front of him. "Ah, it's probably because we look so similar!" He forced out. "You're probably thinking of yourself!"

Aoko gave him an unimpressed look. Kaito regretted having told her that he was Kid.

"I don't think that's it," Shinichi said slowly, a thoughtful expression on his face.

"It…" Kaito started, then felt a pit of dread open in his stomach as that look appeared in Shinichi's eyes. "Must be…" He finished awkwardly.

"Kaitou Kid, in the flesh." Shinichi's smirk appeared on his face. "I can't believe my luck."

Kaito's heart beat wildly in his chest. "No! I'm not Kid!" He yelped. "You've got it all wrong!"

Aoko had a sort of fear in her eyes as well, and she tried to put herself between the two men. "You're wrong, Kaito's not Kid, he's got an alibi-"

Shinichi ignored her, still staring at Kaito. "Well, Kid… If you'd like to meet me sometime, I'd be glad to go out for coffee."

Kaito and Aoko both froze. Kaito spoke first. "...huh?"

"I'm asking you out on a date," Shinichi explained.

"What… about Miyano-san?" The words slipped out of Kaito's mouth before he could stop himself.

"Shiho will be okay with it," Shinichi said, with a surety in his voice that made Kaito want to believe him.
"I'll think about it," Kaito murmured.

Shinichi nodded. "Good. Here's my number."

Now that her fear was gone, Aoko looked like she was trying not to die of laughter.

"Shiho's coming back to Japan," Shinichi told Kaito after they had been dating for a month. They lay together on Shinichi's bed, watching TV. Kaito had his head resting lightly on Shinichi's shoulder, and he looked at Shinichi in surprise.

"Wasn't she due to stay for another month?" He questioned.

Shinichi nodded. "Yes, but they finished earlier than expected, so she's going to be here in a few days instead."

"Ah," Kaito breathed out. He had seen Miyano Shiho a few times before at heists, when she accompanied her boyfriend, but the two of them had never really interacted. And now, Kaito was being told that they would finally meet each other… He swallowed nervously. "What if she decides she doesn't like me?"

Shinichi tensed. "I don't know," he murmured. "She said she was okay as long as you make me happy, but…"

Kaito sat up. "Would you choose her over me if it came to it?" He whispered.

"I don't know," Shinichi repeated. "I love you both so much, and I don't think I can actually choose."

Kaito swallowed. Even though they had only been together for a month, Shinichi did not shy away from the fact that he was in love with Kaito, had been in love with Kaito for years. Kaito still hadn't said it back, but Shinichi understood why. Kaito wanted permission from Shiho before he could say it. But if Shiho didn't like him…

Shinichi sighed, opening his arms. "Come here," he said quietly. Kaito silently slipped into his arms. "I'm sure she'll like you," Shinichi continued. "I'm… sure she will…"

Kaito kept his eyes fixed on the TV, trying to expel the nervous emotions inside him.

Shiho met Shinichi at the airport.

Spotting him among the crowd, she pushed some of her hair out of her eyes and behind her ears before walking up to him, dragging her suitcase behind her. "Shinichi," she called out.

Shinichi turned slightly and saw her, a smile appearing on his face. "Hey, Shiho," he greeted.

"Took me long enough to find you," Shiho muttered. "Why did you have to stay among such a big crowd?"

Shinichi made an offended noise. "Well, where else would I stay?"

Shiho had to give him that.

"Let's head home," she said.

Shinichi nodded, and the two of them made their way to Shinichi's car. Shiho sat in the shotgun seat while Shinichi took the driver's seat, and the two of them made their way to Shinichi's house. After a while, Shinichi said, "I should probably tell you that Kaito might still be at our place."

Shiho turned to him in surprise. "Kuroba Kaito-kun? Why?"

"He was really… tired… last night," Shinichi said, a faint blush dusting his cheeks. "So I decided to let him rest this morning."

"I see," Shiho murmured. "Maybe you shouldn't do tiring things with each other the day before I come home."

Shinichi choked on air. After coughing for a bit, he forced out, "Yeah. Alright."

Soon, they arrived home. Shiho took in a deep breath the moment she exited the car, taking in the familiar air that surrounded their home. "I missed this place," she whispered.

Shinichi smiled lightly. "If I were you, I would have missed it too." He headed to the back of the car and took out Shiho's suitcase. Not about to argue with Shinichi when he was so kind as to take her heavy things for her, Shiho took out her house keys and unlocked the door.

Kaito woke up to the sound of the front door closing. He continued to lay in bed for a while, thinking Shinichi had just left to pick up Shiho, until he heard their voices coming from downstairs and jolted upward, realizing that no, they had just come back home. Quickly, Kaito hurried and locked the door, then threw on some of Shinichi's clothes. His own clothes sat sadly on the floor, unclean, and Kaito kicked them under the bed so Shiho wouldn't have to see. Satisfied with the state of the room and himself, Kaito finally unlocked the door and headed downstairs.

Shinichi and Shiho were deep in conversation when he reached them, though they paused when they saw him. Shinichi smiled. "Hey, Kaito," he greeted.

"Hey," Kaito returned, then looked at Shiho. "I'm Kuroba Kaito," he introduced himself, feeling nerves jumping around inside him.

"So I've heard," she responded. "Miyano Shiho." She held out her hand, clearly intending for Kaito to shake it. He did. "I hope we get along," she said.

Kaito nodded. "Same here."

There was a spark between them that started that day, one that would soon turn into a raging fire. Kaito was sure of that.

"Don't add that to th- Kaito-kun, I told you not to do that!"

"Sorry, Shiho-san!"

Shinichi groaned as he woke up, listening to the chatter of his partners downstairs. Slowly getting off his bed, the detective headed down to see his partners in the kitchen and the stove on fire. His eyes immediately widened, and he sighed in relief when Shiho threw an entire bucket of water onto the stove. "What's going on?" He questioned.

"Kaito-kun set the stove on fire when I was cooking," Shiho said flatly.

Kaito shrugged. "I didn't know it would catch on fire."

Shiho pinched her nose and squeezed her eyes shut, taking deep breaths in and out. "You're such an immature child."

Kaito glared at her. "I'm an adult, I'll have you know. And only a year younger than you."

"An immature child," Shiho said again.

Shinichi smiled lightly as he watched the two loves of his life bantering. He remembered Kaito's worry that Shiho wouldn't like him, but only a few days after the two had met, Kaito told Shinichi for the first time that he loved him. The two had gotten along very fast, and Shinichi was glad about that.

Though really, could Kaito stop setting the stove on fire for one day?
