The building had been infested with monsters.
None of them had expected all the monsters. It was supposed to be a simple quest: Retrieve a few weapons left behind by demigods a hundred years ago and return them to Camp Half-Blood. The weapons were stated to be in an abandoned building that used to be a thriving restaurant all those years ago. However, when they arrived, they found it was not quite as abandoned as they originally thought.
Now, they were running through the halls toward the entrance, clutching the weapons in their hands. Will, who had been assigned as the quest leader, shouted directions, and Lou Ellen was right on his heels. Nico glanced behind, watching as the monsters got closer. Cyclopses, hellhounds, harpies… There's so many of them, and they're going to catch up soon.
I need to stop that from happening.
Taking a deep breath in and out, Nico abruptly spun around and took out his sword. "You guys go ahead!" He shouted to Will and Lou Ellen. "I'll be right behind you."
Instead of listening to him, the two spun around, staring at Nico in shock. "But-" Will started.
"I'll be the distraction," Nico said, trying to make himself sound calm. "Don't worry, I'll come out soon." When the two still hesitated, Nico snapped, "Go!"
Reluctantly, they turned away and continued running.
Nico once again turned to the monsters. The first harpy came close enough and Nico slashed his sword through it.
I suppose, he thought, that tonight, I'll die.
Better me than all three of us.
