Chapter 1: Vision in Las Noches
In the grand throne room of the fortress known as Las Noches, Aizen Sosuke sat on his white throne, his brown eyes bored and blinking slowly, his wickedly handsome face rested on the palm of one hand and his mind drifting.
I've been over the plans in my mind a thousand times, and I know that they will come to fruition. It is just frustrating to have to wait as time moves so slowly. And I suppose that for me, time has really stopped moving at all, hasn't it?
He felt the little pulsing throb of the pale orb that had implanted itself in his chest.
For one who is immortal, things like 'time' and 'waiting' have lost all meaning. Time insinuates a beginning and an end. Waiting insinuates that there is doubt about an outcome.
I have neither.
Some might see that as a good thing. Eventually, I will succeed. There is no failure if you simply can't be stopped from continuing forever. Immortality is relentless.
It is a little tiresome too.
He was surprised how, being bored as he was, it was pleasant to him to look back on his days in the Seireitei.
I was wearing a mask, of course, and no one really saw me, but I admit it was a good feeling to be considered 'normal,' and to have normal days filled with things like warm sunshine, friends and colleagues, hot green tea, books to read, experiments to run and…
He looked up curiously as Gin stepped into the room, his pale face wearing a little smirk that immediately told Aizen that the boredom was about to go out of his day.
"Pardon me for intruding on your thoughts, Sosuke," Gin apologized, sounding more amused than penitent, "but I thought you would want to see this for yourself."
Aizen's head lifted off his palm and his brown eyes stirred with curiosity.
"I'm not quite sure how it happened, but it seems that a couple of the Espadas came across a reconnaissance group in the desert. It was a small group and most of them were killed in the skirmish. But they did manage to take two prisoners alive, and oh, I think you are going to like this!"
A little smile snaked onto Aizen's lips, curving them upward.
"Go on."
"The first is quite a prize. In fact, you have been wanting to learn more about him for some time, as the Gotei and Central 46 know he is a powerful talent, but they have few details on his abilities."
"Who is that?" Aizen asked curiously.
"The one they call Byakuya's right hand," Gin announced proudly, as though he had captured the young man single-handedly, "Kuchiki Tetsuya."
Aizen's dark eyes lit with a sudden, intense interest.
"But if Tetsuya was here…"
"Then," Gin chuckled, "that means that Byakuya wouldn't be far from his side…and he wasn't."
"They took down Kuchiki Byakuya," Aizen mused, "They took him alive?"
"Yes," Gin affirmed, "It seems Grimmjow was able to slip in behind young Tetsuya and held a sword to his throat. He threatened Tetsuya, and…"
"And Byakuya gave in to that?" the leader of the hollows asked, "I wouldn't have thought…"
"Actually, no," Gin continued, obviously enjoying giving his rendition of the story, "Byakuya attacked and Tetsuya slipped from Grimmjow's grasp while he was reacting. It was a very amusing struggle. The two might have escaped if they hadn't been injured in the initial skirmish."
"Is Grimmjow still alive?" Aizen asked, "Is Tetsuya?"
"Grimmjow is being treated by the lady prisoner, Orihime. Byakuya is moderately injured, but Tetsuya had little more than a scratch on him…oh, except for the bump on the head they had to give him to keep him from misbehaving."
"Where are they now?"
"Tetsuya is still unconscious and tied down in my laboratory. I will be conducting a full scan of his body, spirit centers and spirit core to learn more about him."
"Hmm, and Byakuya?"
"I imagined a prize like Byakuya needed to be carefully protected, so I sealed him into a maximum security cell in chains and our strongest limiters."
"Very well," the leader of the hollows said, nodding approvingly, "Why don't you go and get started with Tetsuya and I will make a visit to Byakuya?"
He paused, stroking his chin for a moment, then he continued.
"And Gin, you will want to avoid damaging Tetsuya."
"That makes sense," Gin concurred, "given that he could be useful, either because of his abilities or because he can be used to manipulate Byakuya."
"Exactly."
Gin took his leave of Aizen and exited the chamber, closing the large, white doors behind him. He thought briefly of the unconscious man awaiting him in the laboratory and sighed softly.
Be glad, Tetsuya, that he is distracted from you for now. Sosuke is quite the monster. He won't hurt Byakuya…at least, not right away, but your fate could be rather dark, you being the more expendable one, ne?
Gin kept his eyes carefully slitted as he made his way past two manned guard posts, then paused to enter the code to open the laboratory door. His frown deepened to a scowl as he spotted Szayel Aporro Granz, leaning over the now conscious and terrified shinigami.
"Hmm, what are you doing in here?" Gin snapped, "I know Lord Aizen has given you orders that should be keeping you busy in your own chambers. This laboratory is off limits, unless you have express permission from Lord Aizen or me."
"Oh, don't be so selfish!" Szayel snickered, "I heard there was an interesting shinigami to be interrogated. I thought I would come and offer my services. After all, he does seem to be extremely reluctant to talk."
The pink-haired scientist ran his fingers down the side of one of the prisoner's porcelain cheeks and Tetsuya shuddered.
"Oh, don't worry, precious," the pink-haired scientist purred, "we'll get that tongue of yours to loosen. I have lots of ways…"
"Why don't you run along?" Gin said, opening his oddly luminous, ice blue eyes and fixing them on Granz warningly, "I will take care of this interrogation."
He watched as Szayel huffed and shook his head in disgust, then stomped out, mumbling a mixture of complaints and threats. A little sound of distress made him turn his head back to look at the bound shinigami and Tetsuya shivered visibly.
"You've gotten yourself into some trouble now, haven't you, Tetsu-chan?" he mused, moving to the shinigami's side, "Be glad that I stopped him from interrogating you. I'm afraid you would probably not have survived, and if you had, you'd have wished you hadn't. I can't promise to go easy on you, but maybe you and I can…come to an understanding."
"I'm not telling you anything," Tetsuya replied in a shaky voice, "It doesn't matter what you do."
"There now," the silver-haired man chuckled, reaching down to release the bonds on the young man, "Don't be difficult. Just to warn you, those limiters won't allow you to attack anyone within these walls. And if you struggle, I will just subdue you and tie you down again. Sit still while I have a look at you."
Tetsuya's lips stiffened, but he felt the warning press of Gin's powerful reiatsu and his head bowed. He climbed onto the examination table and sat on the edge. Gin smiled at him, and Tetsuya blinked in surprise, blushing.
"I'm going to need you to undress…oh, just to the waist, for now. I'm going to hook you up to the computer and see what it can tell me about you and that cute little body of yours. I suspect you are more than you seem, ne?"
"I am…just a guard," Tetsuya lied.
"Come now," Gin laughed, "you are obviously more than that…a half-blood who was made Byakuya's bodyguard and healer. The great clans really look down on us commoners, but I think they despise your kind even more, don't they?"
"Yes," Tetsuya admitted softly.
"So, either Byakuya forced them to accept you, or you have something special that convinced them to look at you differently. Oh, you don't have to answer. I see everything I need to know. Your reiatsu is strong…oddly strong, considering that it looks as though it could be strong enough to damage you, if used at full strength…so I suppose you either have a way to protect your body from damage when you use your powers, or you have some other way of releasing your power that doesn't put stress on you. I don't suppose you'll just tell me, will you?"
He glanced at Tetsuya's petulant expression and snickered.
"No? I didn't think you would, but I had to ask. Hmm, this is interesting," Gin said, leaning closer to Tetsuya and peering at him suspiciously, "You're wired a little differently, aren't you. Actually, looking this closely, it seems to me as though Byakuya's got it wrong, having you as a bodyguard. Your power, your zanpakuto doesn't like combat at all, does she?"
"I have made no secret that my power is a healing power," Tetsuya snapped softly, "My Reku-hime and I only trained in combat because we had to be strong enough to protect our freedom."
"Too bad, it seems like you weren't able to do that this time, were you?" Gin sighed, surprising Tetsuya with a strangely sympathetic look.
"No," Tetsuya said in a regretful tone, "I failed to protect Byakuya-sama and I failed to protect myself. I understand that the price for that will be the taking of my life, and I will not be afraid of that, but…I will ask you, is there…any way that you will be convinced not to allow Byakuya-sama to die?"
Gin gave him a genuinely confounded look.
"You sit in the heart of the enemy's base, with Aizen's right hand in front of you, and you ask that person…to help keep one of the Gotei taichos alive?"
Tetsuya met Gin's eyes squarely.
"Are we able to speak openly here?" he asked, "There is something I want to share, but just with you."
"Ah," Gin mused, his blue eyes opening halfway to look at the prisoner, "now you have me very, very curious. What could you want to say that I would choose not to share with my esteemed leader?"
"You have your own agenda, and it has nothing to do with Aizen's agenda," Tetsuya said softly.
"What makes you think something like that?" Gin asked, his eyes opening wider and filling with arousal, "Tetsu-chan, you are walking on dangerous ground."
"I saw it," Tetsuya persisted, leaning forward and lowering his voice, "That day at Sokyoku Hill. When Aizen ordered you to strike Rukia-chan, you were trying to miss, but Byakuya-sama flash stepped in to save Rukia-chan and you hit him by mistake."
"Well, that's a stretch," Gin said, letting his eyes open all of the way and looking down into Tetsuya's.
Tetsuya felt a sensation like ice flooding his veins and lost all ability to move or speak. Gin leaned close to his ear and breathed into it, kissing the soft, flushed lobe tenderly.
"What if you are right?" he asked, "Even if what you say is true and even if I am not with Sosuke, you must know I have my reasons for following him. And I know better than anyone that if I make a wrong move, I'll die in a heartbeat…so maybe we'd better leave this alone, okay, Tetsu-chan?"
Before the stunned shingami could answer, Gin captured his lips in a hard, passionate kiss.

Aizen Sosuke felt the heavy pressure of Byakuya's enraged reiatsu even before he reached the cell where the Gotei taicho had been restrained. He passed the guard post, ignoring the guards, who bowed and called out, "Greetings, Aizen-sama!" as he passed. Reaching the cell, he paused to look inside.
Byakuya sat in a comfortable looking chair, with wrist and ankle restraints, as well as a heavy strap around his torso to hold him in place. His face was bruised and his uniform dusty and torn, but he wore the usual look of pride and dignity that he always had. Aizen smirked at the instant glare he received as the noble registered his entrance into the room and looked up at him wordlessly.
"Byakuya," Aizen greeted him cordially, then he glanced over his shoulder at the one of the guards at the door, "Jun, bring us some tea."
He picked up a chair near the door and carried it to where the noble waited, then set it down and sat facing him.
"I have to say, I wasn't surprised to hear that you were here in Hueco Mundo, spying, but being captured? That is very unlike you, Kuchiki taicho…although, it isn't the first time that your concern for those close to you has, shall we say, tripped you up?"
"What have you done with my cousin?" Byakuya asked quietly, "Have you harmed Tetsuya? Is he still alive?"
"Tetsuya is alive," Aizen answered, noting the tiniest flash of relief in the Kuchiki leader's otherwise steely grey eyes, "and he is…useful. I have no reason to harm him. As long as that is true, you needn't worry about him."
"Excuse me if I do not find your reassurances at all reassuring," the noble said with his usual biting sarcasm, "It is not reassuring in the least to know that you are only waiting for the right moment to decide he is worthless and to kill him…as you thought to do with Momo and with Rukia."
"I did seek to have Momo and Rukia killed when I was done with them, Momo because I had to make her too dependent on me for her to play the role I needed her to play. Killing her would have been kinder than what she endured in the end. And Rukia…well…"
He paused, considering his words. Byakuya's dark eyes betrayed an instant note of curiosity.
"I know that you initially targeted Rukia because you learned that Urahara Kisuke was using her to hide the hogyoku, but once you had taken it, you didn't need to kill her. She wasn't dependent on you, as Momo was, so you weren't being kind."
"I was testing Gin," Aizen confessed, "I suppose it was brutal, but I never take anyone's loyalty for granted. I told him to kill Rukia, and if you have viewed the incident on the Seireitei security record, you will see that Gin was aiming to miss her. You simply got in the way and you were nearly killed."
"You regarded Rukia's life as being so worthless to you that you would throw her away simply to test your comrade?" Byakuya asked, his eyes narrowing, "Does life hold no value to you anymore, Aizen Sosuke?"
The traitor's brown eyes blinked slowly, and he absently laid a hand over the place where the hogyoku had fused with his chest, beneath his clothing.
"I suppose that life is…of questionable value if it is only going to end, and any alliances we make will shatter."
Byakuya gazed at him silently for a moment.
"You are different somehow since the day you left Soul Society to come here," he observed.
"Am I?" Aizen asked, betraying a hint of surprise, "In what way?"
Byakuya studied him more closely, considering carefully before he voiced his thoughts.
"You look…bored."
"I look bored?" the traitor repeated, leaning closer, "I suppose I am. Wouldn't anyone be bored while surrounded by endless miles of sand and a land devoid of sunlight?"
"That's not what I mean," Byakuya objected, "I mean that you look bored with everything. It is as though all of the joy has gone out of your eyes and you look neither ahead to the future for the possibilities, nor to the past for memories. It is almost as though…time has become meaningless for you."
Byakuya's words stopped suddenly, ending in a sound of surprise and shock as Aizen's lips crashed heedlessly into his and the leader of the hollows kissed him hungrily, several times, before pulling back and seeming to catch himself.
What was that feeling he just caused inside me? Aizen wondered, staring and touching his lips with a questioning fingertip, For a moment, it seemed that the haze around me lifted and I found myself looking into eyes that…understood.
I thought I was stronger than that.
I thought that I didn't need to feel things like that anymore.
Desire for this man would gain nothing for me, but a momentary reprieve. One way or another, Byakuya would die in the end and I would dread thinking about the endless years without him.
"That was reckless," Byakuya hissed softly.
"You could have attacked me," Aizen said, tilting his head and narrowing his eyes, "Why didn't you?"
"It would not have helped me to escape," the Kuchiki leader reasoned, "I might have felt an impulsive urge, but I gain nothing if I free myself, only to be immediately recaptured."
"So, you will wait for another opening," Aizen concluded.
"Yes."
"Well then," the traitor laughed, "we might as well enjoy our time together until then."
"How do you mean?" Byakuya inquired, his reiatsu rising under the seal, "You are going to continue what you started? You plan to sexually assault me?"
"Of course not," Aizen answered, smirking, "We can just talk for awhile, then if you still wish for me to sexually assault you, I suppose I will have to oblige you. I…wouldn't want you to leave Las Noches feeling cheated."
For some strange reason, the deadly look Byakuya gave him in reply only excited him more.
What a joy…to be surprised by someone…
