Rick sighed and flopped on his chair. The whole froopyland thing had been stressful. Rick thought about what his daughter said after their adventure.
"Ok, I know what I want to do...I want you to decide."
"What?"
"For once in my life, dad, I want you to decide. Do you want me to be a part of your life or do you want me gone?"
What could Rick say? How could she ask him to make her life choices for her! If he said he wanted her to stay, she would blame him if things didn't work out and isn't it selfish of him if he made her stay? Rick was a selfish bastard through and through but...he isn't that selfish. He wanted the meltivous for Beth and who was he to deny her that but on the other hand, if he told her to leave, she would hate him forever and think that he doesn't love her.
Rick loses either way! He either makes Beth stay and she stays in her miserable life, making his heart break or he makes Beth leave and she hates him forever but at least then she starts over.
The first thing Rick wanted to say when she asked him was, "Yes, of course I want you to stay!" But he didn't, he stood frozen for a long time. He told her! He told her he couldn't make choices for her anymore because she wouldn't listen! That was his second thought, to just tell her to figure it out herself but when he looked at Beth's eyes, he could tell that she really wanted him to choose and that she would listen to whatever he decided.
This is nuts! What kind of kid would ask that from a parent!...Who the hell was he to talk? Looking back, Rick remembers asking his mom a similar question. He had said to her, "Do you love me or not?! Tell me!" Rick scoffed as he remembered her reply. "...You worry about the wrong things, Rick." He had left as soon as those words left her mouth and never looked back. He was 16. Young and stupid. He really believed that deep down his mother had loved him but he was wrong and his asshole of a father didn't give a single fuck about him either, all his father gave him was his labcoat, nothing else.
As he looked at Beth, he realized he was no better than them. He was a neglectful, drunken asshole of a parent too but at least he loves his daughter, that has to count for something...right? Maybe sending her off is the right call. No doubt she's sick of him always causing trouble for her and her family but could he live with the fact that she hates him forever? Rick already has enough guilt, he doesn't think he has room for much more.
Stupid fucking, Beth! Making him decide on a hard decision! This is her mess! This is her life! Why should he decide?! Anger boiled inside him, he wanted so badly to tell her to Fuck off but he couldn't.
What the hell should he do?
Tell her to stay or leave?
Staying has a lot of negative senorios and less potives. Leaving has some negatives too but way more positives. In the end, Rick grabbed his dart gun and shot Beth in the arm, knocking her out cold. He picked up her unconscious body and brought her to his lab. He sat her on a chair and grabbed an example of her DNA to make her clone.
...
Hours of making the clone passed and Rick looked at the two ladies in the tanks. One labeled real Beth and one labeled clone. He sighed and turned around as the machine took off the lebeles and began switching them around, so he would have no idea who the real one is. He couldn't make this decision, he wasn't strong enough so he had a stupid machine do it for him.
The first Beth that wakes up, he will tell to leave and once she's gone, Rick can pretend that this never happened. Clone or not clone, it was still Beth. His blood, her memories and personality.
"Complete!"
Rick sighed again and turned around. He had no idea who was who. Good. He took them out of the tank, got them dressed, and when one of them started to steer, he took her to the kitchen where they were talking and waited.
Beth woke up and groaned before standing up. "W-What happened? Did I...pass out or something?"
"Leave." Rick blurted out and Beth blinked in surprise. "W-What?"
"You wanted me to decide for you and that's what I think is best. I think you should leave and find out what it is you really want." Beth stared at him in total shock before glaring at him in teary eyes. "I knew it. I knew you never wanted me around! Don't worry, I'll leave right now!"
Beth then ran upstairs, no doubt running to grab some things before leaving. It's like watching the young version of him, leaving home all over again. History repeating itself, except his mother didn't make him into a clone.
God, this is much harder than Rick thought it would be. He had no idea if this was Beth or the clone but it still hurt like a motherfucker. Worst then any stab, broken bone, or destroyed organs. When Beth came back, Rick handed her the keys to his spaceship. "Take it. I want you to have it. I'll call Birdperson, you can stay with him for a while until you figure something out. I'm sure he won't mind, he has always liked you. You remember how to work the ship, right?"
Beth just nodded before going outside but not before sending her father one last glare. If she was trying to stab his heart and set it on fire with her eyes, it worked. Beth then slammed the door and Rick waited until he heard the ship flew off before going back to the garage to get the other Beth.
She looked like she was going to wake up. Rick took her to the kitchen and waited. Beth stood up and looked around confused. "W-What happened? Did I...pass out or something?"
Rick sighed. "Look, Beth, I want you to stay. I know it's not the answer you thought I would say but I do, I really, really want you to stay." Beth had tears in her eyes and she smiled before hugging him. "Oh, dad! For a second there, I was worried you would tell me to leave!"
Rick hugged her back but it felt wrong. He was either hugging his real daughter or some clone and he couldn't stop thinking about the one that just stormed out a few minutes ago. Did he make a mistake? Why did he still feel so guilty?
It didn't matter. Clone or real, it was still Beth. His blood. The only light in his life. At least, that's what he tried to convince himself but when he looked down at Beth in his arms, he realized who he was holding right now could be a total stranger. The clone may have Beth's memories but...still. She wouldn't be the girl he raised, the girl he taught, or the girl he made with Diane.
What the fuck was he thinking?! He made a big mistake! He was tempted to call the Beth that just left and tell her to come back so he could maybe figure out some way to tell who was his real daughter and fix this but then he realized that if he told Beth to come back because she might be the clone, she would never come back! There is no way Beth would come back after her father admitted something like that. She would probably disappear and Rick will never see his real daughter again...if she is his real daughter.
Goddammit! This was low, even for him! What is he supposed to do?! Why did he realize after why this was so messed up?!
"Dad?" Beth called and looked down at her to see worry on her face. "You ok?" Rick put on a smile. "I'm fine, sweetie. W-Why don't you go rest. It's been a c-crazy day."
Beth chuckled. "Yeah. Well, goodnight dad."
"Goodnight, sweetie."
When Beth left, Rick frowned and he immediately grabbed bottles of alcohol. Honestly, how much more guilt can one man live with?
...
Months later,
"I can't believe you?!"
"You can't? I can."
Rick was sitting on his chair as Beth, well, Beths, yelled at him angrily. Yeah, the other Beth came back and the Beth that stayed knows about it. He failed to realize how this was all on him? I mean, Beth was the one who asked him to decide her future. She was kinda asking for this. Of course, Rick knows he's the asshole here and the terrible father but, again, he wasn't strong enough.
"Beth." He called, stopping their angrily runt. "What?" They both said sharply but Rick only wanted to talk to one of them. "O-Ok, to avoid confusion I'm going to call you Beth." He said pointing at space Beth. "An-d you Bethany." Then at normal Beth.
"Bethany, I'm sorry about this. I sh-should have told you the truth but I knew you wouldn't take it well."
Bethany scoffed. "You got that right?! I don't even know if I'm a clone or real!" Rick rolled his eyes. "What does it matter? You're still Beth."
"It matters! It matters to me!"
"Hey, you asked for this! I told you I didn't want to make choices for you anymore but noo, you had to ask me the most impossible question I couldn't answer! I mean, what did you expect when you asked me that?! You had to know I was going to pull an dick move!"
"Hm, he has a point." Beth agreed and Bethany scoffed at her. "I can't believe this! You're agreeing with him?!" Beth shrugged. "Well, it's the truth. We both know when we asked him that question we expected him to either tell us to leave, blow us off, or pull some kinda sci-fi bullshit. Telling us he wanted us to stay was the last thing on our mind."
Rick frowned at that but he didn't say anything. Nothing he could say could fix this.
"But we don't even know if we are real! Doesn't that bother you?!" Beth shrugged. "Not really."
"Well, it bothers me! Isn't there some way you can tell us who's who?" She asked, turning to her father. Rick sighed. "Look, I'm su-re if you give m-me enough time I can come up with some way to find out who's who but...d-do you really want me too?"
"What kind of question is that? Of course I want you too!" Bethany insisted and Rick raised a brow. "Do you? If you find out who's who, what will change? You will still be the loving mother/wife who stayed and Beth will always be the badass bitch who left. The only differences between you two are how you were made and the choices you make. Y-You two are t-the same person b-but you are also y-your own person. One Beth is going to make one choice and the other Beth is going to make another. Infinite possibilities."
Bethany and Beth let this information sink in before talking. "I don't want to know." Beth said and Bethany blinked in surprise. "What?"
"As much as I hate to admit it, he's right. What does it matter if we are a clone or not? You will still go on being the one who stayed and I will go on being the one who left. You still will have your family, your job, and I'll still live life in space. I don't want back into this shitty life, back with Jerry and a miserable job and I doubt you want to abandon your family to live out in space. Nothing will change but, one of us knowing we aren't the original."
"Glad at least one of my daughters agrees with me." Beth glared at him as Bethany looked side to side, looking to be debating before looking at Rick. "Do you love us?"
Rick and Beth both looked surprised by her question. "What?"
"Do you love both of us or just the original or neither?"
Rick looked between Bethany and Beth. Can he love both of them? He looked at Bethany. After the whole froopyland thing, the two had really gotten close, closer than they have been in years and even built a whole society together. It reminded Rick of the good old days, back when Beth was his little helper in his scientist projects. Then there was Beth, she hates him with a passion and Rick knows it, he doesn't blame her but the two had a pretty good time at the cafe before everything went down. Beth reminded Rick of the Beth he used to know before she met Jerry, before she got pregnant at 17, before everything.
He looked at both of them one more time...He can't cower out of this again as much as he wants too. Rick makes a bunch of mistakes, he's learned to live with them but he never makes the same mistake twice. They were both his daughters. Both the same person with a few differences. "Both of you." He finally answered and the two looked totally shocked. "What?"
"Clone or not, you two are still my daughters. I made you...just not the same way. F-First time, enjoyable, second time...not so much. I like each of you...and...I love...both of you."
The two stayed in shock Silence for a while before they finally responded. "Oh...dad." Bethany cried, overjoyed that her father didn't love her any less because she may or may not be a clone.
Beth scoffed. "Wow. I can't believe I'm this fucking gullible. Rick loves no one but himself!" Bethany crossed her arms. "You're one to talk since you're the one who left."
Beth glared at Bethany before leaving and Rick gave his daughter a scolding look. "Goddammit Bethany, why did you have to go and say that!"
"Well, I mean, she did. She didn't have to go just because you told her to, but she did."
Rick rolled his eyes. "Because she was miserable here! With her job and Jerry! I don't know what I'm Earth happened to make you go back to him but you did even though you were much happier divorce! T-This ha-ppy, healthy f-family thing isn't going to last and deep down you know that!"
Bethany hung her head as Rick went after Beth before she took off. "Beth!" He called and Beth turned to him with a frown. "Look, Bethany doesn't mean it. She's j-just in denial t-that a version of herself could a-abandoned her own family."
Beth scoffed. "I abandoned having to hear Jerry calling me every night begging me to take him back, I abandoned my shitty job where my co-workers treat me like crap, and most of all, I abandoned you! Bethany may believe you love us but I don't! A father who loves her daughter wouldn't do all the shit you did!"
Rick hung his head in shame. "Look, I'm n-not going to lie a-and say I wasn't a shitty father. A-After your mom...I don't know, I got screwed up and the whole clone thing...yeah, that was really messed up. I regretted it as soon as-as you left that day. But...we-we can still have good times, can't we? Like in the g-good old days."
Beth glared at him. "Not a chance asshole." She then got in her ship and flew off. Rick sighed disappointedly but a proud smirk crossed his face. "That's my girl."
