Things continued in this way for a long time, with Rei and Kazutora eventually moving up their calls to every other day instead of just once a week. Neither were really able to be away from the other for that long. Reis' life had ended up taking an entirely different turn than she had ever expected. Little had she known her mother had life insurance, and she was the beneficiary. Which she had never even heard of before but the symptoms fit her far too well.
Today she was hanging out with Chifuyu at the Pet Shop, helping him to stock shelves and order things he needed. Kazutora was on video chat on her laptop. "You know you're supposed to be working, not chit chatting." Chifuyu chastised her teasingly and she rolled her eyes at him, giving Kazutora a little smile. "If you weren't talking you wouldn't forget!" He said exasperatedly, Kazutora watched the banter between the two who in his absence had gotten rather close. It was funny to see, Chifuyu really did mother on her quite a lot. Which of course Rei accepted, though not without giving him a bit of guff. "I'm also training him for when he comes to work here. Right Tora?" She asked with a little smile curling her lips, knowing he was going to be out at the end of the month had her beyond excited. "Yeah definitely I got all the basics down. Count the products, see how much we sold from last count, decide how many to order based upon that. Totally got it. Honestly, am I getting paid for my training Chifuyu?" He asked and the dark haired man shook his head, throwing his hands up in mock frustration. "You are both ridiculous! Yes you are getting paid for your training. You also make more than Rei does as a trainee because you're also technically a partial owner." Rei rolled her eyes, not like she needed a huge amount of income. Just enough to pay her bills every month and keep food on her table. "So mean Chifuyu! Here I thought we were so close. Meanwhile you like Tora better than me. Such a tragedy." She mocked disappointment and heard Kazutora chuckle at her theatrics, meanwhile Chifuyu was clearly exhausted with her behavior. "Kazutora is my friend and co-owner, you are a bratty child who I often question why I hired." Rei rolled her eyes at his statement, he knew damn well he hired her because he loved her. She also managed most of the pet shops' finances, as well as general needs such as stocking and ordering. "Because I let you crash at my place whenever the girl you brought home turns out to be a walking red flag? Which they always are by the way, you have horrible taste in women." Kazutora let out a low whistle. "She's got you there Chifuyu." Too many times he had called Rei to find her in absolute stitches, regaling him with another tale of Chifuyus poor taste in women to sleep with. "It's easy for you both to say! You're in jail! You're content with being alone because everyone gives you 'the ick' whatever the hell that even means." Rei snickered a little bit, he wasn't entirely wrong.
Kazutora and Rei weren't together yet. While they talked almost constantly, in ten years there had been no real progress in that area. Both of them were simply content in each other's company. Sure there were occasional flirtations but nothing more than that. "Hey I'm gonna be out of jail in just a few short weeks. I'd love to see what reasoning you come up with once I'm out." "What is the plan for when you get out anyways?" Chifuyu asked, he'd been informed already of the date and time but not what happened after. "Figure I'll keep the third floor, Kazutora can take the second, and you can keep the first for when you need to run from your walking red flags." Rei flashed him a smile and Chifuyu rolled his eyes. Kazutora was a little anxious about being out for the first time in ten years. But Rei had assured him time and time again that she had him covered. No need to stress about bills, just to chip in what he could when he could. Though he did have anxieties about general daily living he was more anxious about being in such close proximity to her for the first time in a long time. Talking was one thing, actually being close to her was a whole other. A part of him worried that he'd start living with her and she'd get sick of him. But he tried to push it out of his mind, she'd waited around for ten years, she couldn't get sick of him that quickly.
The day finally came, Chifuyu and Rei had both gone to pick up Kazutora. The whole ride Rei was practically shaking with anticipation, she had promised at one point to kick his butt for leaving her but now she really just wanted to hug him for the first time in ten years. "You're shaking the entire car." Chifuyu commented, looking over at her leg tapping at an accelerated rate. Rei appeared embarrassed and tried to slow it to a stop. "Are you nervous?" He asked and Rei shrugged. "Nervous, excited, it's a whole mix honestly. Mostly excited." It was good to hear, over the last couple years the trio had gotten close. They were basically all about to be not only working together, but living together on occasion as well. Chifuyu did worry about tensions possibly running high at times, but for the most part Kazutora had become a bit more laid back. Rei was a bit of a workaholic, needing to loosen up more often. Chifuyu was the mother of the group, for as much as he hated to admit it. Always making sure everything was planned out, and lined up to go off without a hitch.
The duo pulled up in front of the jails pick up area, Rei didn't know if she should get out now or wait. "Rei I swear if you don't get out and tackle that man I will." Rei choked a bit on her laughter, immediately picturing Chifuyu tackling Kazutora into a hug. Somehow she didn't think Kazutora would necessarily be opposed, if it was anyone else perhaps. But at worst he may just be a bit weirded out. Stepping out of the car easily and into the crisp November air Rei shivered a little bit. When she was anxious she always felt cold and the air wasn't helping her situation. She fiddled a bit with the large brown sweater dress she was wearing, she'd tried to dress herself at least somewhat nicely. Though the dress hung off of her a bit, and the leggings beneath were just plain black she thought she looked nice. Hina had thought so as well, as of course Rei had video called one of her few female friends for advice.
"How long do you think this'll take?" Chifuyu asked, rolling down the window of the car. Rei turned back to him with a shrug. "I dunno, they said it varies when I asked on the phone. Why do you have a hot date with another red flag?" She snickered as she saw his face get a little bit pink, he totally did of course he did. "Just let me know when you need the room Chifuyu." She said with a grin and he flipped her the bird before looking past her. "Hey there stranger, you need a ride?" If Rei had spun around and faster she would have given herself whiplash.
There stood Kazutora, his hair had grown out so much, gone were the blonde streaks he used to have. But somehow he looked even more like the Kazutora she remembered like this. She said leaning back into her seat and getting comfortable for the rest of the ride home. Occasionally casting glances at Kazutora and catching him glancing back at her.
Once they pulled up, Chifuyu sped off, telling them to have fun and wishing Kazutora good luck with her demon cat. He raised a questioning eyebrow at her and she shook her head. "I wish I could say he was being dramatic. Of the five cats that have found me, Spectre is the only one who for whatever reason only seems to like me. He and Chifuyu have a…tense relationship." "I will make sure to keep that in mind." Kazutora said as they made their way upstairs from the first floor of the apartment. The second floor was nice, fully furnished already and he even noted a few small packages on the table labeled with his name. "Some of the guys sent those along for when you got out. Dunno who sent what, but I stocked your fridge a bit. If you need anything else either come up to my apartment and take shit or let me know what you need. Uh Chifuyu and Mitsuya took the liberty of getting some clothes for you. Since Mitsuyas kind of a low key fashion guy now, so your closet and bureaus are stocked. "I know I should probably let you go, let you keep showing me around but I really don't want to." "That would be the demon cat in question." Rei sighed moving away from Kazutora to call Spectre over to her, he appraised her with his usual bored cat stare before he eventually came over to be scooped up. Which she did easily. "This is the great white dickhead. I swear he's really sweet sometimes." Kazutora reached out a tentative hand which Spectere allowed, Kazutora patted the animal gently. "He doesn't seem so bad." Kazutora said, eyeing the cat who now that he was closer had certainly seen some shit. One of his eyes was clouded and blind, his face was full of scars that were clearly old. This was a battle hardened cat. "Yeah, I always crack the joke that Baji sent him to be my guard cat. Seems totally fine with you for the moment though." Rei took it as a good sign. Of course the second Kazutoras hand got to close the Rei the cat spat at him, despite the fact that he was literally patting him. "Told you, guard cat." Rei lifted the angry white creature to place a kiss on his head before setting him down on the floor, where of course the cat let out an aggravated noise and thundered off. "I like him, glad to know you've had protection while I was away." Kazutora said with a grin and Rei smiled a little bit. "I can protect myself just fine but yeah he's helpful." The moment had once again been stopped and Rei wondered for a moment if the universe was conspiring against her.
She led Kazutora upstairs to her apartment, giving him a rather brief tour. He of course stopped at the small cork board she had displayed in her living room. It had tons of photos, of her mother, of Baji, of him. He marveled at them all for a moment, and Rei laid herself down on the couch in her living room. "Where'd you get all of these?" He didn't even remember most of these pictures being taken. "I found them when I cleaned out my mom's house, hidden away in the attic. I didn't even know they existed til I found them." She commented and Kazutora managed to pry himself away from the cork board filled with memories from their shared childhood days. Seeing her laying languidly on the couch he made the choice to join her, carefully moving himself to lay next to her. Of course it was Rei this time that pulled him into her, letting out a contented sigh as she did. "It's funny, I didn't realize how much I missed this til right now." It was true, Baji had probably not even the slightest clue what his silly nickname for her actually meant. But it was ironic how well it fit her. "I can see why it's your favorite."
