Meg was happy about her first day in actual school. She had help from her friends and was caught up enough to get into 8th grade. As soon as she walked in, she was excited. A little exhausted from the walk across town, but she'd run for her life longer distances. She ran to her first class. English. She began to prepare for disaster.

When she got to her seat, a blonde girl next to her said "You new here? I don't remember seeing you before. Hi I'm Destiny. And you?" "Meg. Do you like school? I was homeschooled by my stepdad until he died." Destiny looked a bit unnerved at the way she said it so casually, so Meg said "It wasn't that bad, he abused me." She began to say sorry, but the teacher cut her off. "Okay, since you're talking, I'll assume that you're eager to start our poetry unit." Meg groaned. Before getting to school, she promised herself that if she had to hear one haiku, she was going to lose it. She made another promise to not tell Apollo until she began failing the class.

Destiny handed her a note under her desk. She handed it right back and whispered "Dyslexia. I can't read." She replied "Do you have something against poetry?" Meg said "You would too if you had a poetry, music, etc obsessed bro." She nodded and said "What's he like?" Meg said "Tell you after class. Teacher's getting suspicious." The teacher wrote his name, but Meg couldn't read it. She said "I can't read. Can you say your name? Because it looks like 'am hoTs'." "It's Thomas. Matthew Thomas, but you can call me Mr. Thomas. Now, I like to start my unit by getting to know you all. Who here knows what a haiku is?"

It took all Meg's restraint to avoid banging her face against her desk. A freckled redhead boy across from her raised his hand. "My name is Nathaniel Lockwood, call me Nate. I can explain it with a quote. 'Five seven then five, syllables mark a haiku, remarkable oaf.' Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's in this one scene when Sokka got into this poetry rap battle. Sorry, I just love that show." Meg was happy that he raised his hand. At least she didn't have to explain it. Then Mr. Thomas said "Precisely, now your assignment is to write as many haikus as you can about your summer." before handing out paper.

It was an absolute disaster. By the time class ended, they all had to listen to over 50 haikus. She almost burst. Destiny and her friend Axel ran to catch up with her. "Hey, you said you had an annoying older brother? How old is he? What's his name? Why does he annoy you?" Destiny asked. Meg groaned "He's adopted. His name is Lester Papadopolous, but he goes by his middle name, Apollo. I still like to call him Lester. You may think a music obsessed brother would be fun, but believe me, you won't when he starts belting Let It Go and The Bare Necessities. I don't care how good he is, it will always count as annoying to start singing at midnight for no reason."
