Season 11
7th Heaven-
Background: In the season finale of season 10, Simon and his girlfriend Rose, didn't end up getting married. Instead, they decided to call off the wedding. The family, of course was thankful. No one was too fond of Rose in particular. They had never been too fond of any of Simon's girlfriends, as a matter of fact. He had had so many that it had been hard to keep count. Deena was the first one in junior high. He had Carol, Roxy, SarahBeth, and Jennifer all in high school, and all within a 24 month span. Cecilia was probably the best one. Georgia and Rose were by far the worst.
At the reception, Annie and Eric received some wonderful news, in addition to Simon and Rose not getting married. They were getting some more grandchildren, 6, in fact! Yes, six! Matt and his wife Sarah, announced they were having twin boys; their middle daughter Lucy, and her husband Kevin, announced they were having twin boys; and Carlos, Mary's husband, got to deliver two announcements. One, he and Mary had got back together and remarried, and two, they were having twin girls. Matt and Sarah graduated the next day on Sunday afternoon, at 2:00. As they were taking their seats, Mary walked up…, "Do you have room for five more?". "MARY! You look beautiful!" Annie shouted. She gave Mary a kiss, and said, "It is so good to see you. I wish you could've been there yesterday.". "I wish I could've too, Matt told me it was interesting.". "That's putting it mildly.", Eric replied. Their graduation was over at 3:30. As they were standing up to leave, Mary said she had a surprise for everyone. She and Carlos had brought bandanas and drove their family to the college that Mary would be graduating from. They walked them in, sat them down, and told the family they could remove the blindfolds.
When they took them off, they looked around in wander and amazement. "What is this?" Eric asked. Mary said, "Well. Carlos left out some news yesterday. In about 20 minutes, I'll be walking across the stage as a college graduate getting my bachelor's of art in education, and coaching. I'm going to become a teacher and a basketball coach". "WHAT!?" asked Annie. "What I told Carlos not to tell you yesterday, was that I was graduating today as well. I've already got a job lined up that starts in July. I'll be the high school girls' basketball and softball coach, and teaching history to freshmen and sophomores in Glenoak". "Mary, congratulations!", said Matt and Sarah. Although they had lived in New York for awhile now, and Matt and Sarah got to spend some more time with Carlos and Mary than the other Camden kids, Mary kept that secret from them, as well as the Colonel and Ruth.
From Kevin's POV-
The last few months have been a whirlwind. After announcing we were pregnant with twins at Simon's wedding in May, we found out that the babies would be born with some issues. What caused concern, was that they weren't in a good position to begin with. Lucy's brother and sister-in-law, Matt and Sarah, had just graduated from medical school in May, the day after Simon's supposed wedding and their sister Mary graduated college the same day. Also, Matt and Sarah, and Mary and Carlos, all announced at Simon's non-wedding they were having twins as well. Eric and Annie were getting 6, yes SIX grandchildren. Matt was now officially an OBGYN, and Sarah was a pediatrician. Matt and Sarah were planning on moving their practice to Glen Oak after their residencies in New York were over which would be in about two years or so. What they didn't expect, was how soon they would get to put what they had learned into practice.
Lucy started having contractions at the Colonel and Ruth's where we were staying for several days to get a vacation after their graduation. We had all needed a vacation. Between work for me, and work at church for Lucy, and the disaster of Simon and Rose's relationship, and a fake wedding, we all needed a break. Mary had surprised everyone by also graduating college the same weekend as Matt and Sarah. THAT was definitely an unexpected surprise. On the Thursday after their graduation, we'd been eating lunch and all of a sudden, Lucy got a strange look in her eyes, and started to turn pale. Matt noticed it first. "Luce, are you okay?". "I'm fine, I think it's the peanuts I had last night. It must just be an allergic reaction". Lucy said. All of a sudden, she started to get up, and said, "Matt, I don't feel so good". Thankfully he was sitting next to her. His doctor and big brother instincts kicked in and caught her before she fell and hit her head on the Colonel and Ruth's tile floor.
"Call 911!", Matt yelled. The Colonel jumped into action and found the phone. Here Matt was, spending part of his graduation celebration tending to his sister's medical emergency. He had a similar incident a few years ago. He was home, temporarily, because he and Sarah had separated. The stress of medical school became too much for him to take on. He came home and stayed with Annie and Eric. Lucy had been pregnant with Savannah at this time. She had then been put on bed rest. One day I was going to run a few errands which was a disguise. Lucy was practically begging Matt to take her shopping. What she didn't know, was that we were hoping she would pester him, he would get her out of the house, and then we could decorate for a surprise baby shower for her. She had been so mad that no one had bought her anything. Well, Savannah decided to make her entrance in a department store elevator. Matt had tried calling the house but no one answered. I'd bought a house without telling Lucy and tried to sell it back, but it didn't happen. While we were out looking at the house, Matt finally got a hold of someone at the house. One of the girls that was there for the baby shower, finally answered the phone. They came running, (Eric, Annie, and Ruthie). Simon was in town shopping for a gift for Lucy, and Martin had taken the twins shopping for new baseball gloves and his friend Mac showed up. They heard the commotion and ended up at the elevator. Eric and Annie saw them and asked what they were doing there and they replied that they just ended up at the elevator after looking for gloves. Matt saved her life and delivered the baby in the elevator and I got to help a little bit.
BACK TO PRESENT DAY-
We're all in the emergency room. Annie, Eric, Sarah, Sam, David, The Colonel, Ruth, Ruthie, Simon, Ginger, Savannah, my sister Patti-Mary and I. We couldn't get a hold of Ben. He'd been working the night before, and probably had his phone off because he was sleeping. Matt was the only one allowed back there because he worked at this hospital. He came out about an hour later. It turned out that Lucy had a stroke in the midst of the contractions and she had lost the twins and it took her life.
Matt had done everything he could to save her, but there was nothing he could do. When I think who got the most raw deal that day, it was Matt. Yes, I lost my wife and Savannah lost her Mom, but ultimately Matt lost the most. He tried so hard to take care of his little sister and she didn't make it. No one should have to see their sister die. He blamed himself, even though the other doctors he worked with told him that it wasn't his fault. When he was walking down the hall, Eric broke down first. Being a minister, he recognized the look on Matt's face. Savannah recognized the look on Matt's face as well, and ran up to him. "Uncle Matt! Uncle Matt!", she said. "What is it, beautiful?", Matt replied, crouching down to pick her up, tears still streaming down his face, while trying to force a smile. "Is my Mommy going to be ok?". He knew that I should be the one to tell her, but I wasn't in any shape to do so. "I don't know yet," he replied giving her a kiss on the cheek and hugging her tightly. "Do you know how much I love you, Savannah?". "This much!", she said holding her little arms out as wide as she could. "Even wider than that, kiddo", Matt said, kissing her cheek again. "Well, I need to speak to your daddy in private for a few minutes, and I'll give you another hug, ok?". "Okay"., Savannah replied. When Matt said this, everyone stiffened their backs. "Could you follow me, Kevin?", Matt asked. I did as he asked and followed Matt through the double doors. Once out of sight, Matt turned and stopped. So did I. Matt went and hugged me. I knew something wasn't right. Matt was a manly man, and rarely gave hugs to another man.
"What is it bro?". I asked. "What's the matter?", hugging him back because I felt forced to, in a way. "She didn't make it, Kevin. The attending thinks she had a stroke like I suspected at dinner, and she thinks that Lucy probably had an allergic reaction either to the peanuts she complained about or something she ate. There's just no telling right now. If you want, I can order an autopsy and toxicology report. We can find out more by doing those two things, rather than just thinking about it. My boss has said that the hospital will waive the charges of everything since I work here and Lucy was my sister". "I need to process this, Matt". "So do I". "Matt, is there a way you can tell the family but not Savannah yet, and then maybe you and Sarah tell her by yourself?". "If that's how you want to proceed, sure. It would be my unfortunate honor. And hey, Kevin?". "Yeah?". "I love you. I might have not been the warmest and most outgoing person towards you, but you have been, and will always be my brother". "Thank you. I love you too," I said giving him a big hug. "I need to go and tell everyone and it would be easier to tell them all at once if you'd like to spend some time by yourself with Luce". "I'd appreciate that, Matt. Really". "I'll lead you back there, and I'll have Patti Mary go and play with Savannah until I've told them, and then either Sarah and I, or Mom and I will take her by herself and tell her, if you don't mind.". "Please do"., I replied.
When Matt got to the waiting room, he addressed the group, which now included Ginger, the Colonel, and Ruth, Hank and Julie, Ben, and Patti Mary. "Matt, what happened to my baby girl? How's she doing? She'll be alright, won't she? Please, please tell me!" Annie asked. "Just a minute, Mom.", Matt replied. "Patti Mary, could you take Savannah downstairs to the children's play room? It's 2304". "Sure", Patti Mary replied. "Come on, Savannah. Wanna go play?" she asked. "YYYYEEESSS!" screamed Savannah. That got everyone's attention. Why send Savannah, and leave the other young ones there? Once Patti Mary had left the room with Savannah, Matt broke down. "It looks like she had a stroke at Mary and Carlos' house like I thought,". "Wait up!". Mary and Carlos came running down the hall. "Matt, how is she? Is she going to be ok?", Carlos asked. (Mary and Carlos had been trying to hold down the fort at their house and had just been able to go to the hospital.). Matt had been sobbing and couldn't talk. "I just started to tell everyone else that Lucy did in fact have a stroke at your house like I thought. She didn't make it.". "NOOOOOO!", Annie screamed. "Not my baby!". At that point, Matt broke down completely, as Mary, Julie, and Ruthie rushed to console him. After they had all somewhat regained their composure, Mary said to Matt, "I'm thankful you were there for her, Matthew Eric Camden".
All Matt could muster was to repeat, "I'm sorry Mom and Dad. I failed. I failed Kevin and Savannah, I failed Lucy, the twins, you, dad, Simon, Mary, Ruthie, Sam and David.", over and over. "It's not your fault Matthew", Eric said hugging him. "You did everything you could". "Oh Matt, please, please don't blame yourself.", said Annie. "You were there for her and did what you could". "What's Kevin going to say? How can I ever show my face to him again after I let his wife and children die?", Matt asked himself out loud. "You can start by giving me a hug.", he heard from behind. Matt turned around to find Kevin. Kevin embraced Matt. "I know it's not your fault", Kevin replied. "We all knew this pregnancy was risky to begin with. Well, you, me and Sarah knew". (Lucy, Kevin, Matt, and Sarah had kept it from the rest of the family).
"Annie, Eric, Mom, Ruthie, Simon, Sam, and David. I'll try calling Ben again here in a few minutes. You guys can go and see Lucy if you want. I need a moment with Matt and Sarah. Colonel, Ruth, Hank, Julie, Ginger, Mary and Carlos, when they come out, you can go in. When Patti Mary brings Savannah back up, Patti Mary, and Ben can go see her. Matt offered himself and you to tell Savannah, Sarah. Do you mind?". "Of course, Kevin, I don't mind". Sarah replied. "Thank you", Kevin said. Once they were out of the room, Kevin addressed the rest whom were there. "Did I do anything wrong? "Did I wait too late to bring her in? She canceled her appointment last week, against your advice, Matt". "Yes, she did cancel against my advice, but no, you didn't do anything wrong, Kevin. Don't beat yourself up. You know how out of it she was. I was against her taking the medicine, but her doctor insisted, right?". "Yes, he insisted". Sarah spoke up, "You know how nervous she was for this pregnancy, Kevin. We were all nervous for her". "I know I was, Kevin. Each day she would text me when she wasn't feeling well, and wanted me to keep it from you", Matt said. As Kevin was about to reply, the head doctor of the department came out. "Mr. Kinkirk. Would you like to come back and attend to your wife's body?", Dr. Arthur Slingbaum asked. "Yes. I think I'm ready," Kevin replied wiping tears from his eyes and hugging Sarah and Matt. "Can my brother and sister come in with me?". "Yes, they may join you".
They walked back to the room. Annie saw Kevin, and walked over and hugged him and said, "I love you, you'll always be my son, and most importantly, this is NOT your fault. And I want you to always feel comfortable calling me Mom". "I appreciate that, Mom. I really do. Matt and Sarah will tell Savannah, I'm not sure I can handle it right now. ", Kevin replied, giving her a hug. "Dad, would you do the service?", Kevin asked Eric.
In a few minutes, Mary, Carlos, The Colonel, Hank, Julie, Ginger and Ruth walked in while the others stepped back out to the waiting room. The big and tough Colonel John Camden started to cry. "I can't believe she's gone. I can't believe it. My sweet granddaughter and those sweet boys…". "I can't believe it either, Colonel", Mary said. The Colonel walked up to Matt. "Son, I know you did the best you could to take care of your sister. She loved you. You knew that, right?". "Yes, Colonel. But why do I feel like I failed everyone?", Matt asked tearing up again. "Because you love your family, Matthew. It's that simple. God gave you a big heart and knew that you needed it to love your family and others, because He knew how much of an impact that you would make on this world. And most importantly in this case, it's NOT your fault". Ruth walked over to Matt and hugged him. "I love you Matthew. Lucy loved you and so does your entirely family; even and most especially Kevin and Savannah. And like the Colonel said, don't go blaming yourself for this. God needed another angel. I know that won't make you feel any less guilty, but just try and take to heart the fact that she loved you anyway". "Thank you, Colonel. I love and appreciate you and Ruth". "We love you too".
"Hey Sport". Julie said. Julie had stepped out to let someone else in. Matt had slipped out too, and was walking down the hall to get some space from everyone else. Matt turned around, knowing exactly who was in the hall with him before he saw her. Julie was the only one who called him Sport. She'd done it ever since he was little. "Hey Jules. I'm sorry. I should've saved Lucy and the twins, but I let everyone down". "Matt, come on, please. Don't beat yourself up. God knows you tried, and He's not mad at you or anyone else in the family.". She gave him a hug. "I'm not the biggest praying person, but may I pray for you right now?" "Yes, please.", Matt replied.
"I don't know if I can do it"., Eric was saying. "I think I'll check and see if Morgan Hamilton would like to help. His daughter Keisha was Lucy's age and they were pretty close. I'll step out and make the call". "I wonder if Chandler would like to help?", Kevin asked. "I don't know," Eric replied. "Let me see about Morgan; could you check with Chandler?". "Sure. I'll give Roxanne a call.". Eric stepped out into the hall, dialing Morgan's number. Morgan was Eric's seminary roommate, best friend, and fellow minister. He was now the pastor of First United Methodist Church in Churchill, Arizona, 200 miles from Glen Oak. "Hello", a woman answered. "Patricia, it's Eric Camden". "Eric! How nice to hear from you! It's been awhile". "Too long", Eric replied. "How's the family?", Patricia asked. "Well, Patricia, that's what I called to talk to Morgan about". "He's just walking in the door right now, I'll get him. Honey, it's Eric Camden on the phone for you.". "No way!" Morgan replied. Morgan and Eric hadn't spoken in quite awhile, so Morgan was excited to hear from him. "My brother! How's it going?", Morgan asked. "Not good.", Eric replied. "Can you put your phone on speaker so I can speak with both of you at once?" "Sure", came Morgan's voice, recognizing the change in Eric's voice. "What's up?".
"Eric, I'm so sorry", Patricia kept saying over and over. He told both of them about the stroke, and how both Lucy and the twins had passed away. "Now, I have a question for Morgan", Eric said. "Name it brother. Anything.", Morgan said between tears running down his face. "Would you be willing, or do you think you could perform Lucy's service? I'd love to, but I know I'm not in the emotional shape to do something like that. I would ask my former associate pastor, but I don't know if he could handle it. Would you like to work with him? He and Lucy worked together a lot, so if you would like some help, I'll check and ask. His name is Chandler Hampton". "Of course! Email me the details, and I'll get it taken care of". "Thanks". "Anything else?". No, I think that's it for now. I'll be in touch. Just keep us in prayer.". "Of course. We love your family, Eric", Patricia said. "And we love your family too, Patricia. Thank you.".
The phone rang 4 times. Roxanne finally got to it as it went to voicemail. "Roxanne, it's Kevin Kinkirk. I need you to call me ASAP. Thank you.". She did as she had been asked. Kevin had been her partner when he first moved to Glenoak years ago, and she thought of Kevin as a big brother, since she was an only child. Kevin picked it up on the first ring. "Hey Kinkirk. What's going on?". "Are you sitting down?", came Kevin's voice. She knew something was immediately wrong. She knew the tone of voice Kevin was using, and the last time they'd talked, it had been happy and cheerful. This tone was neither happy, nor cheerful. "Yes. I'm sitting down. Chandler just walked in from the store. Let me put it on speaker so we can both hear". "Good, I only have to do this once. I wanted to let you know". "What is it Kevin?" Roxanne asked. "I lost Lucy and the twins to a stroke and seizure this afternoon. We were at her brother and sister-in-law's house here in New York, celebrating their medical school graduation from last weekend, and their sister Mary's college graduation from last weekend. We were planning to fly home tomorrow night. We were eating, Lucy got a weird look on her face, and thankfully Matt was able to catch her before she completely fell to the floor". "OH MY GOD! NOOOOO KEVIN! NOOOO!". Roxanne broke down into sobs, and Chandler took the phone. "Kevin, where are you?". "I'm at Eric and Annie's house". Kevin replied absentmindedly. "We'll be right over", said Chandler.
When they got to the Camden's, they rang and rang the doorbell, not remembering that the Camden's were out of town and in New York. One of the neighbors, Mr. Charles Kirtwood, noticed them and told them where they were at. "I'm calling Kevin," Roxanne said. "Good idea. He was probably so emotionally drained, that he didn't think to tell us he wasn't here". The phone rang three times before Kevin picked it up. "Hello", came a very groggy Kevin. "Kevin,", Chandler said. "Yes?", Kevin replied. "Where are you? We're at the Camden's and one of the neighbors said you were in New York". "Oh yeah. I'm sorry. We came to New York to attend Matt and Sarah's graduation". "We'll be on the next flight out", came the reply from Roxanne.
Roxanne and Chandler landed at Dulles International Airport in about 5 hours. They called Eric and Eric gave them directions to Matt and Sarah's house. When they got there, they walked in and immediately started to cry. "Kevin, I'm so sorry! What happened?", Chandler asked, hugging him. "We were having dinner Thursday night, and Matt noticed Lucy started having a stroke. We got her to the hospital, and she passed away, and we lost the twins". (He could have said, "I" lost the twins", and not, "we", but the loss was something the whole family was grieving and enduring at the moment). "Oh Kevin!", Roxanne cried, hugging him. They had been partners together at the Glen Oak Police Department for about 10 years before Roxanne and Chandler moved to upstate New York to take on a church (Chandler), and a new job as assistant Police Chief of Rockford City (Roxanne). They had been in Glenoak to visit Roxanne's dad, and some friends and were actually trying to get together with Kevin and Lucy, and didn't know about Matt's graduation. "Matt went back into surgery with the attending doctor. He blames himself for Lucy dying and part of me is angry at him, because one part of my brain thinks it's his fault, even though down in my heart of hearts, I know it's not". "Anger is one part of the grieving process", Chandler said. "I have a question"., Kevin said. "What's that?', Roxanne asked. "Could you read the eulogy at the funeral?", Kevin replied. "Really? Me? Gosh, I don't know, Kevin. That's a big responsibility". "You're one of, if not THE best friend she ever had as an adult. I think she would appreciate it". "I'll think about it, Kevin", Roxanne said. "Ok.". "Oh, Kevin. I almost forgot. Captain Michaels said that he would personally receive the body at the airport and escort her to the funeral home, church and the cemetery". "Seriously?!", Kevin asked. "Yes, seriously". "Chandler?" Eric asked as he rounded the corner. "Eric!", Chandler shouted, hugging him. "I'm so sorry to hear about Lucy and the twins". "Thank you. I've got a question. I know Kevin has asked if Roxanne could read a eulogy, but could you help direct the funeral? I've got a friend from seminary, who agreed to do the service, but I think he'd appreciate the help". "Sure, I'd be glad to. I felt like I was working for my sister and the Lord, not just my boss. I'd be honored".
Location: Matt and Sarah's House
Suddenly there was a knock at the door. "Who could that be?" Roxanne asked. "I don't know", Kevin replied. "Not everyone's back yet". Kevin opened the door, to a man and woman whom looked familiar, but couldn't place how they knew him and he them. "May I help you?" he asked. "Yes, I'm Rosina Glass, and this is my husband Richard. We're Sarah's parents. And you are?" she asked. "Kevin Kinkirk. I was married to Matt's sister Lucy. She and our unborn twins died after she suffered a stroke today". "Oh no! I'm so sorry". Just then, Eric and Annie walked up behind Kevin. "Richard. Rosina. What're you doing here?" asked Annie. "We'd come to have our weekly dinner with Matt and Sarah. This man here says that he is your son-in-law, and your daughter Lucy died". "Yes, all of that is true", Eric replied. "She had a stroke while eating dinner the other night. Matt tried to save her, but it was too late". "Wow. What can we do?" Rosina asked. "Give Matt a hug when he gets here. He and Sarah both have been through the ringer, and wish they could've done something, anything, that would help her. Oh, before I forget. This is Roxanne and Chandler Hampton. Roxanne used to work with Kevin at the Glenoak Police Department, and this is her husband Chandler, who used to be my associate minister before he moved here to take another church of his own. You remember him, right Richard? We spied on him after he started there, while I was out because of my heart surgery. Lucy took over after Chandler left". "Ha! Yes, I remember. I thought he looked vaguely familiar.", Richard replied, his face turning a deep shade of red at the forgotten caper. The doorbell rang again. It was Morgan and Patricia Hamilton. "Morgan, Patricia!". "What're you guys doing here?". "We had to come and see you guys. John will be here soon. How are you guys doing?". "A little better. How are you guys? How did you know we were here? How's Keisha? I imagine she didn't take the news well". "Well, to answer your first question, we asked Captain Michaels if he could ping one of ya'll's cell phones and that's how we ended up here. And to answer your second question, No", Morgan replied. "She and Jonathan neither one did. They're just as heartbroken as we were. They loved Lucy and the rest of you just like if you all were really a part of our family. Nigel isn't on speaking terms with any of us right now, so I don't think it'll help if Simon were to call him, even though they were best friends all those years ago."
Matt and Sarah came walking up carrying the twins looking exhausted. "I love you Matt and Sarah", David said. "We love you more than you know Little Man", Matt replied. "Yes, I agree with David. I love you too", Sam said, as Sarah carried him into the house. "We love you both so much.", Sarah replied. They walked in, surprised to see the unexpected houseguests. Matt and Sarah's eyes settled on Richard and Rosina. "Richard and Rosina", Matt said, as he sighed and closed his eyes. "I'm so sorry. I meant to call, but I absolutely, completely forgot". "Matthew Eric Camden", Rosina said. "No apology is necessary. We'll get out of your hair. You need time to grieve with your family", as she walked up to hug them both. "Rosina, you and Richard are a part of Sarah and I's family too. Besides, I think John and Michael would appreciate having both sets of grandparents and other extended family around". (This was the first time Matt had mentioned the boys' names out loud to his family, much less, Sarah's). "What?", asked Eric, as Annie walked up. "You're naming one of them John?". "Yes", Matt said. "John Charles, after the Colonel and Grandpa Charles". "What's going on, what did I miss?" Annie asked. "I was just announcing the twins' names. Is everyone here? The Colonel, Ruth, Hank, Julie? Ginger? I thought everyone was meeting here, but I forgot about Rosina and Richard. I think it would brighten the mood a bit". "Yes, the rest are upstairs. Do I need to get them?" Eric asked. "Yes, I'm calling a family meeting in our living room. Family that includes Richard and Rosina, Hank and Julie, The Colonel and Ruth, Mary and Carlos, Simon and Sandy, Chandler and Roxanne, Morgan and Patricia and Ginger and Ruthie, and Sam and David. And anyone else who's here that I don't know". A few minutes later, everyone was gathered in the living room. "Okay. I thought we could all use something to brighten our day. Lucy would want that. We're naming one of the twins John Charles, after the Colonel, and Grandpa Charles", Matt said. "And the other Michael David after Dad and David", said Sarah, as she reached over and kissed her Dad on the cheek, and gave David a hug. Cheers were sent up in exclamation of the wonderful news. "You're naming one of them after me?", David asked. "That we are buddy, that we are.". "What about me? Why doesn't my name get to be a new baby's name?", Sam asked. "Well, Sam….it will be.", Mary said. "Since Matt and Sarah announced the names of their twins, I think it's only fair that Carlos and I do the same. Are you okay with that, Kevin?", Mary asked. "Yes, Mary. I'm okay. I think Lucy would want you to.". "Good, I was hoping you would be. One of the quintuplets will be Samuel Kevin, and one will be Ruth Annette, and the other two, Simon Eric, and the last one either Lucy Jennifer, or John Charles.". "What?!". Cries of exclamation erupted in congratulatory tones to each of the expecting couples. "I thought you were just expecting twins, Mary.", Ruth asked. "Well, Grandma Ruth, that's what we thought, but my brother here found out a few days ago when I went in for a checkup, that I'm actually having quintuplets. How far along did you say I was, Matt?". "It looked like about nine to ten weeks. Everything looks fine right now, but you have to be careful. Carlos is in charge, and so is Mom. I say that, because I know she'll fly back with you after the funeral and divide her time between your house and ours.". Annie smiled at Matt, because it was true. Matt knew Annie pretty well, and she was already planning to fly back. A few minutes later, "We're hungry", said Matt. "Did everyone else already eat?". "No" was the resounding answer. "We'll go get it", Richard said. "Let me put Sam down and I'll give you my credit card", said Matt. "You'll do no such thing", Rosina said. "We're taking care of it. Does pizza sound ok for everyone?". "It sounds good to us,", said Matt, gesturing to he and Sarah. The Colonel and Ruth walked into the kitchen too, as Matt and Sarah finished up the conversation, and put the boys down.
They got sleeping arrangements taken care of while Richard and Rosina left for pizza. Matt and Sarah of course slept in their bed. Eric and Annie slept in the guest bed. Richard and Rosina slept in the pullout couch. Kevin slept in the twins' room, which doubled as a guest room. Simon, Ruthie, and Sam stayed with Mary and Carlos. David, Julie, and Hank, stayed with the Colonel and Ruth. The Hamilton's had gotten a hotel room and spent the night there. While they were consuming the pizza, they reminisced about some Lucy stories. "I remember the time that she had colored her hair just to get Jimmy Moon to notice her, and she got mad at me when it didn't turn out the way she expected.", Simon said. "Oh, I remember that,", said Eric. "The pure fact that you're still alive today is living proof that she loved you, Simon". "I know,", Simon replied, tearing up. "I wish I would've shown her how much she meant to me more as my big sister." "I remember teaching her some history over supper one night before the twins were born", The Colonel said. "Ruthie called me and said things were going haywire, so I grabbed my bags and headed out. I believe that was the Sunday that Eric's sermon got televised, Ruthie tried putting a mint up her nose". That got a laugh from everyone. "We knew that Dad wasn't cut out to be on tv". Matt said. "She might have had the most drama of anyone in the family, but that girl loved people big time. Her heart was always in the right place, even if things didn't turn out the way she expected.". "How's that house doing that her Habitat for Humanity put up several years ago, Dad?", Simon asked. "Actually, it's doing really good. There's a whole new houseful that just moved in because the other ones moved into nursing homes or Assisted Living Centers. It might be too soon, but I'm thinking we should do something to either dedicate that house in her memory or something after everything calms down.", Eric replied. "That's fantastic that it can live on, and she had a major hand in it.", Sarah said. "Did anyone let Heather know?", Annie asked. "She and Lucy had become really close, especially here lately, after finding out the twins could be born deaf, and she wanted a sign language refresher.". "I'll call her after supper.", Matt said. "For sure. That was the one thing people loved about Lucy. She always meant well.". After supper, Matt called Heather's mom, in Glenoak. "Good evening, this is Julie Kane, how may I help you?". "Mrs. Kane, this is Matt Camden, Heather's old boyfriend.". "Matt! It's so good to hear from you. How're things with you and Sarah?". "Things are good with us, but we wanted to let Heather know that my sister Lucy passed away this afternoon.". "Oh Matt! I'm so sorry. What happened? Can we do anything?". "I'd ask that you pray for us. She had a stroke last week. She and the rest of the family came to New York to watch Sarah and I graduate from medical school, and last Thursday afternoon, she passed out at lunch and she had a stroke that killed her and my two nephews she was pregnant with." "Oh my gosh! Yes, I'll let her know. Will the funeral be here in GlenOak? If it is, we'll be there.". "Yes, it will be. I'll let you know when we know the details.". The next morning, they all met at I Hop for breakfast, and then went back to get ready to fly to GlenOak for the service. They knew weather was changing. They got flights back to Glen Oak and got in late. They were supposed to fly out at 0900, but it was 1230 PM when they finally left. Thanks to the weather, they got delayed by an hour in Oklahoma City, and then they had another 1 ½ hour layover in Dallas, and then yet a 3rd layover in Denver for over 3 hours, finally arriving in GlenOak at about 1700 California time. They got through security and got their stuff and made it back to the house about 1830. Captain Michaels was good to his word, and was there to receive Lucy's body, and guided it to the funeral home. When they got home, they all got ready for bed and fell asleep almost instantly. They were to lay Lucy and the twins to rest in the church cemetery Wednesday afternoon at 1400, and it was going to be another long day.
"The Funeral"
The morning of the funeral on Wednesday came with more and more audible grieving. Sunday services were still held at the church and Chandler filled in. From the time they got home from church Sunday afternoon, through the service on Wednesday afternoon, Eric and Annie's house was jam packed with family and friends. The Glass's, Hamiltons, Kinkirks, Hamptons, Senior Camdens, Hastings, and Riveras, took up a lot of room. As everyone was getting ready to leave to head to the church to get ready for the service, the phone rang. "Hello" said Eric. "Eric, this is Ben, Kevin's brother. Is he around?". "He's getting ready for the funeral, Ben. Where are you at?". "I'm at my hotel, but my battery in my car died, and I can't get a cab". "Okay, I'll find someone to come and pick you up. We've got several cars here, and I'm sure someone can do it. I'll let you know in a minute. I forgot where you said you were staying last night. Where was that again, I'm sorry". "Don't worry about it. It's the Holiday Inn, on NW 36th Terrace and Lincoln, across from Roosevelt High School". "Got it. I'll get someone to head that way". Ruthie came down the stairs. "Ruthie, could you go and pick up Ben, Kevin's brother? His car battery died, and he needs a ride to the church for the funeral and doesn't have a ride". "Sure. Where is he at?". "The Holiday Inn across from Roosevelt High School". "Got it. I'm headed that way. Who's car should I take?". "Who's car is at the end of the driveway?" "It looks like Matt's rental.". "Matt! Can Ruthie take your rental to pickup Ben for the funeral?" "Sure", Matt replied.
Ruthie went to pick up Ben from his hotel. She liked Ben. He was like another older brother to her. He was sweet to her, and always had a gift for her when he came, although she couldn't think of what he could bring to her to brighten her up on this solemn, cloudy, cold, and rainy day. She pulled up to the hotel, and spotted him almost immediately. He was third in line to be the Station Chief at his fire station, and was doing it because he wanted to succeed in his career, but now, he was doing it to honor his nieces and nephews.
"Hey Ruthie,", he said when he got in the car. "Hey, Ben. How're you?'. "Well, I'm here to help bury my sister-in-law, the only woman who could and did complete my brother, and their twins. How do you think I'm doing?", as they hugged. Ben had gotten Ruthie some candy that she liked. "Sounds eerily similar to how I'm doing. Burying my sister and twin nephews". They had a banter back and forth that really no one understood in the family but them. Sometimes, people just click in a certain way, almost unexpectedly. They went to the church. Walking into the church, they saw several people that they immediately knew-Chandler, Roxanne, Ginger, (Annie's stepmom), The Colonel, Ruth, Mary, Carlos, Charles Miguel; Simon and Rose; Matt and Sarah amongst the others. Everyone sat in their respective places. Morgan and Chandler called the service to order.
"We're here today to celebrate the life of Lucy Jane Camden-Kinkirk, and her twins, Joseph and Johnathan. I've known Lucy since she was in Junior High, and it was an honor to see her develop as a minister and watch her minister to so many different groups of people. I can't believe that I even have to do this. To be honest, I always hoped that she would be the one who presided over my funeral. She had such grace and poise, which she passed along to Savannah. She was one of the sweetest and nicest people I'd ever had the pleasure of knowing. Camden family, no doubt you'll hear this a lot for quite some time, and I know you've heard it a quite a bit already this week, but I love you. Your family has been a staple in this community for a very long time. Now, before I let Chandler do the rest, Reverend Sandy Jameson, who took over Lucy's role when she took the Senior Minister position, would like to say a few words, Sandy?"
Sandy approached the podium. "Thank you, Morgan. First of all, for those who don't know me, my name is Sandy Jameson, and Lucy took me under her wing about a year ago, when I became a single mother. She was a bright light in my life that I didn't know I needed. However God did. She helped me in ways I didn't and still don't understand. She guided me in my relationship with Christ, with my now fiancé, gave me parenting tips when I needed them. All of this during a time when she had been ready and preparing for one the best experiences of her young life as a human, Christian, and mother. I was kind of adopted into the family, so I can call her my "sister". (Eric and Annie smiled at this). "I loved her and her whole family. Kevin, Savannah, Annie, Eric, Simon, Matt, Mary, Carlos, Sarah, Ruthie, Sam and David- I love you and am praying for you". "Thank you", Kevin mouthed. "Now I'd like to share a verse that has brought me great comfort since I first heard the news. From the NRSV, the 23rd Psalm, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff-they comfort me. You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD my whole life long". As she walked down from the podium, she stopped and gave Kevin a hug. "You'll still be my older, wiser, and smarter brother. Always. I love you.", she whispered. "Thanks Sandy. I appreciate it and I love you too", he whispered back. Sandy went and sat behind Annie. "Thank you sweetie. I appreciate those kind words", Annie said. "No problem, Annie. Anytime I can help, let me know".
"Next is a former minister from Glenoak. He pastored the Free Will United Methodist Church here for 20 years, before moving to Churchill Arizona. He was Reverend Eric Camden's seminary roommate and long time best friend, and he has volunteered to read the eulogy. I welcome, Reverend Morgan J. Hamilton". "Thank you, Chandler.", Morgan said walking to the podium. "Good Morning. Thank you for allowing me this opportunity, although this isn't something I ever expected. If anything, I always figured that Lucy would be doing this for me like Chandler was saying. She was always like another daughter to me. The way she and my middle daughter Keisha would fight one minute, and hug it out the next never ceased to amaze me. Girls and boys are certainly different". The whole congregation laughed at this. "Lucy Jane Camden Kinkirk was born March 23rd, 1984, the third child to Eric and Annette (Jackson) Camden. She loved people, and wanted to become a preacher, finding her calling in the sixth grade. After she had become the associate minister here at Glenoak Community Church, an opportunity for her opened up at Crossroads Cathedral, a small country church, about 2 ½ hours north of here. Ultimately she felt called to remain here close to her family. She, we believe, is in Heaven, reunited with her Heavenly Father, and her earthly family whom gone on before her. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Charles and Jenny Jackson and best friend Sarah. She leaves behind her husband of the home, Kevin James Kinkirk, daughter Savannah June, parents, Eric and Annie Camden of Glenoak California, older sister Mary Julie Camden-Rivera and her husband Carlos of New York City, New York, older brother Matthew Eric Camden and wife Sarah, of New York City, New York, younger brother, Simon James Camden, of Hollywood, California, younger sister Ruth Annette Camden, and younger identical twin brothers, Samuel John Camden and David Joseph Camden, all of Glenoak California, paternal grandparents Colonel John and Mrs. Ruth Camden of Buffalo, New York, and maternal step-grandmother Ginger Jackson of Phoenix, Arizona; best friend, Roxanne Richardson-Hampton; along with a host of other family and friends. She never met a stranger and was always a friend you could count on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The family would like to thank the many family and friends whom stepped up to walk along side us during this time. May God bless you all".
After the service was over, the family went outside and started to head to the cemetery. Once at the cemetery, the family filed in under the tent, where Captain Michaels, of the Glenoak Police Department, gave another eulogy. After the eulogy was over, friends and family stood around the tent reminiscing of stories about Lucy. Annie came up to him. "Kevin, I love you. How're you holding up?". "Thanks, Mom. I'm doing okay, I guess. I'm more worried about Savannah. She's done nothing but cry for about five days. I don't know how to help her". "What if she stayed with Julie and Hank for a few days?", Annie asked. "Do you think it would help?", Kevin asked. "There's only one way to find out. She is a school principal and Hank is a pediatrician after all. They might be able to help.". "Julie, do you mind if Savannah came and stayed the night with you and Hank for the next few days?", Annie asked. "That should be fine, let me check with Hank". At that moment, Hank walked up. "Hank, would you mind if Savannah came and stayed with us for a few days?", Julie asked. "No, I don't mind at all. I love spoiling my nieces and nephews". "Thanks Hank. You have no idea how much this'll help", Kevin replied.
After returning back to Eric and Annie's house, Kevin quickly fell asleep on the couch. Eric came into the kitchen where Annie was fixing some hot chocolate. "How're you holding up?", Annie asked Eric. "I don't know right now. One minute I'm fine, and the next an inexplicable amount of pain and grief washes over me. Chandler told me yesterday that it would feel that way for awhile. It felt strange being on the receiving end of a speech I'd given to other couples who had lost loved ones before, you know?". "I'm sure it was", Annie replied. "Where are Matt and Sarah?". "I'm not sure. I think Matt went to get something, but I don't know what". At that moment, Matt and Sarah walked in. They had a few wrapped presents for Annie, Eric, Kevin, and Savannah. "What's that?", Eric asked. "Just some stuff we thought you would like. We were going to give these out at our graduation party, but we forgot.", Sarah replied. Kevin, hearing the talking in the living room, woke up and walked into the kitchen. "Hey, Kev, how are you doing?", Matt asked. "Better now that I had a nap. Thanks for asking", Kevin replied. "You're welcome. Here, this is for you; this is for Mom, and this is for Dad, and this is for Savannah.". Eric opened his first. It was an 8X10 picture of Lucy the day of Simon and Rose's fake wedding, beaming with joy at the prospect of having twins. "Wow. Matt, thank you", Eric said. Annie opened hers next. It was a group photo of Lucy, surrounded by Matt, Mary, Ruthie, Simon, Sam, and David, after Mary's graduation. "Matt and Sarah, thank you. I think this was one of the only pictures taken of just you kids in ages and ages". "You're welcome, Mom. We got one of those printed for ourselves, Simon, Mary, Ruthie, and the boys too.". Kevin opened his next. It was an 8 X 10 black and white photograph of he, Lucy, and Savannah, when Savannah was just three months old and Kevin and Lucy had pictures done. "Where did you find this to get it reprinted?" Kevin asked, his eyes tearing up. "Mom and Dad had a small one, and I asked them if I could borrow it. I didn't tell them what I was going to do with it", Matt said. "Wow", Kevin said, with tears filling his eyes. "I don't know how to repay you. Just let me know what I need to do, and I'll do it. Anything.". "Just keep being a great dad to Savannah, is all we ask." Sarah said. "We have two more specifically for Savannah. One was a picture I took of Lucy holding Savannah a few days after Savannah was born, and I had it blown up, and the other is one of she, Matt, and I taken not long after she was born. Lucy wanted to work on her photography skills while she was resting, so she asked if we would be willing to be in a picture with Savannah. We fell in love with her at that moment, and knew that you two made perfect babies, but we'd like Savannah to be here to open them up. Where is she at?". "She's out with Ruthie and the twins right now. They went to get ice cream.", Eric replied. Kevin went over and hugged Sarah first, and then Matt. "I feel like I've said this too much here lately, but I love you both. Thank you for being here for me". "Hey, you're my brother, Kevin. It comes with the territory", Matt said. "We love you too. And I'm going to work on being better brother to you as well". "Being an only child, I dreamed of what it would be like to have brothers and sisters growing up, and now that I have a whole mess of them, I pester my parents all the time now, of why they didn't have more", Sarah replied. At that comment, everyone laughed. It was a much needed break.
They then went into the living room to relax for a bit. A few minutes later, Simon and Sandy came in. "How're you doing Kevin"?, Sandy asked. "A bit better I guess. Thanks", he replied. "You're welcome.", she said. Simon and Sandy then went into the kitchen because they were starving. Baby Camden was only a few weeks old, and they were a bit worried, considering everything that was happening, but between the doctors and nurses, everything was on target. They had yet to tell everyone of their relationship, and were hoping to announce it in a special way. "Simon, Sandy! What're you guys doing here? I expected you guys to have already left. I thought you had an early flight this afternoon.", Annie said. "We have an announcement, so we decided to put off going home.", Sandy replied, "We want to tell everyone while they're here". "Well, pretty much everyone is here. Matt, and Sarah are in the living room right now. The twins are with Ruthie, and they went to get ice cream with Savannah. They should be back any minute now. I think Mary and Carlos are upstairs as well along with the Colonel and Ruth. Let me get them to come downstairs and we'll meet you in the living room". "Carlos, Colonel, Ruth, Mom and Mary! I need you all in the living room. Simon has an announcement!". At that, they came running downstairs, arguing over who was going to get to hug Simon first. He might not have turned out to be the greatest adult, but was proving to still be a wonderful and loving brother. A minute later, Ruthie, Savannah, and the twins walked in the door, and found everyone in the living room.
After everyone had gathered in the living room, Simon started in. "As most of you know, I've not been the best in the family at staying to myself before I got married. I found out yesterday, the consequences of those actions", he said his voice shaking a bit. "Go on", Eric said, his breathing labored, and words measured. "It turns out that Aaron is mine, and not Martin's. For the time being, we're keeping this a secret from Martin. And as of today, Sandy is four months pregnant with my second child as well which may turn out to be twins. We'll find out in another month at the next ultrasound.". This announcement elicited gasps from those in the room. Before he or Sandy could say anything, Ruthie walked in with the twins and Savannah. "What's going on everybody?" Ruthie asked. "Your brother is having a baby, Ruthie.", Mary replied. "You remember Simon,", Ruthie started in, "how we all covered for Mary when she couldn't pay her bills, by taking the twins money from their piggy banks and everyone was being nice to her except me that night? I was the only one who got angry at her in front of you, Matt, Lucy, Mom and Dad. Do you!?". "Yes, Ruthie, I remember". "Well, I'm doing it again. I thought we were best friends and you were someone I could look up to. I guess I was wrong. Matt and Kevin, it's up to the two of you to be the brothers I want to look up to as great people. I love you both. Simon, I don't ever want to speak to you or hear from you again". Everyone's jaw hit the floor as she ran out of the room. At that moment, Heather walked in the door.
"What's going on guys?", Mary asked and Heather signed as they came in together. "The three of us had better talk alone first, Mary.", Matt replied, giving them a hug and ushering them into the kitchen. He signed for Heather's benefit. "Apparently Aaron isn't Martin's baby after all. He's Simon's". "Do what!? Why that little weasel!". "I know, girls, I know. Calm down. And it seems he's now got Sandy pregnant a second time. She's four months along. Go upstairs and talk to Ruthie. I'll join you for a bit before killing Simon". "Alright, let's go". Matt and Mary went upstairs and found Ruthie crying in her room. Mary knocked quietly. "Who is it?" Ruthie replied. "It's Heather, Matt, and I", Mary replied. "Can we come in?". "Sure, as long as Simon's not standing there beside you". They opened the door and walked in to find that Ruthie had been crying on Lucy's bed, or what had been Lucy's bed when they were both small. "Why? Why Matt? Why Heather? Why Mary? Why did he have to announce it today? After everything he was taught". "I don't know, Ruth", Matt said, pulling Ruthie into a hug. "I pray and hope that Dad doesn't have another heart attack because of this". There was another knock at the door. It was David and Kevin. "Who is it?", Matt asked. "It's us", Kevin and David replied. "Come in guys". They both came in and gave Ruthie hugs. "I can't believe this, Mary.", Kevin said. "Neither can I. After all he's been taught, after how he grew up. I just don't get it.".
"Matt!" Annie called from the living room. They just heard a thud. "Come quick! I think your dad's having a heart attack". "Well, that prayer didn't get answered in the way I'd hoped", Matt said rushing downstairs. He, Sarah, and Kevin, immediately rushed to Eric's side, Kevin checking for a pulse, Matt preparing to give CPR, and Sarah getting the paddles ready. The ambulance showed up and loaded Eric onto the stretcher. Matt and Kevin rode in the back of the ambulance. "Annie, you can ride with me," Sarah said. "Okay, come on Ruthie.". Mary and Carlos took Sam and David in their car. "What about us?", Simon called back. "You two stay here and think about what you weasel's have possibly done to your father, Simon!", Annie yelled as she ran out the door.
They got to the hospital. "Matt! Kevin!", Hank called out to Matt and Kevin as he saw them rush in the emergency room with a couple of EMTs, and Eric on a stretcher. "Hey Hank. Dad had a heart attack. Is there a trauma room open?". "Yes, Trauma 2 right around the corner. I'll be right there". "Thanks". "You're welcome". They got Eric transferred to the hospital bed from the stretcher. "What happened?", Hank asked as he came in the door and started to examine Eric. "Simon told us that the baby belonging to Sandy, is in fact, his". "Aaron is Simon's and NOT Martin's?" Hank asked. "Apparently.", came the reply. "I'm glad in a way, that Lucy isn't here to deal with this.", Annie said. Matt and Kevin's eyes started to become wet and they both started crying. "Oh, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said anything," Annie told them. "It just came out". "I know Mom. Lucy's just been on my mind a lot here lately", Matt said, hugging her. "She's been on mine a lot too, Matt.". Annie replied.
A few minutes later Matt's phone rang. He looked at it and let it go to voicemail. "Who was it?", Kevin asked. "Simon. I'm not speaking to him right now". "Annie, Matt, and Kevin, I've got something to say, and it'd be better if the whole family was here. Where are Ruthie, Mary, and the twins? And the Colonel and Ruth? They should all be here for this". "We're here," came Mary's voice. "And I brought some visitors with me". The Colonel and Ruth, walked up behind Mary with Carlos and the twins and Ginger. "What's going on, Hank? How's dad?", Mary asked. "Before I go on, could one of you call Julie and ask her to come up here? My phone is in my locker and I can't use it right now". "Sure", Mary said. She called Julie. "Mary? Hi! How are you? What's going on?". "Julie, dad is in the hospital and I need you to get here asap. Hank wants to speak to all of us. The Colonel and Ruth are here. Matt has called Sarah, and Simon, and they're on their way along with Sam and David". "Okay. Give me fifteen minutes and I'll be there. Which floor are you on?", Julie asked. "We're on the 6th floor in the South Wing". "South Wing. Got it. Wait, South Wing? Is there something wrong with your dad?" she asked. "I don't know. I just got here." Mary replied.
Within about 10 minutes Julie walks up, hugging her family and husband as she does so. "What is it sweetie?", she asks Hank while holding on to Erica's hand. "Eric had another heart attack. And unfortunately this one proved to be fatal for him. I'm sorry, Annie, Kevin, Matt, Sarah, Mary, Sam, David, Colonel, Ruth, Julie, Ruthie, and Ginger, but he's gone". "He's what?!", Annie shouted. "I'm sorry, Annie. He's gone. There's nothing we could do. It looks like his heart blew up. Was anything said to him recently that might have caused him any stress? As if burying your daughter and grandchildren twenty-four hours ago isn't stressful enough.", Hank asked. "Simon's going to be a father. An unmarried father in about five months", Matt said. "What!? How?!" boomed the Colonel. Everyone else's jaws dropped, because the only ones that knew had been in their house. The Colonel hadn't made it downstairs for the announcement. "Sandy. You know, the new minister at the church? She spoke at Lucy's funeral. She got pregnant recently and Simon told us that he is not only this baby's father, but he's also Aaron's father too, not Martin". "I'll kill him. I'll kill him, I'll kill him, I'll kill him! His own selfish, stupid actions killed my only son!", The Colonel boomed. "Calm down, Colonel. Take a breath, or else you'll be in the other bed in the same room as Eric.", said Ruth.
Simon walks into the room. "What happened? How's Dad?", he asked. "You killed your dad, you pipsqueak. I cannot believe this! You, SIMON JAMES CAMDEN, killed your father.", The Colonel screamed, before slapping Simon and walking out of the room. "I'll go check on him", Julie started to leave. "Jules, no. I'll go. If I get around Simon for too long, he and I will both be patients here with me winding up in jail." "Okay, but be careful, Matt. You know how he can be". "Simon, I need to speak with you out in the hall.", Hank said. They stepped out into the hall. "So I hear that Sandy's going to have a few babies by you. Funny thing is, I haven't seen you with her at any appointments. What's going on?". "What do you mean, 'a few' babies by me?", Simon asked. "Well, Matt said that you got her pregnant. And apparently you did it twice, but when I did her ultrasound yesterday, she was given the wrong images by mistake. Is she here?". "Yes, right there.", he said his breathing labored extensively. "Sandy. How're you feeling this afternoon?", Hank asked. "I'm doing fine Dr. Hastings. Just fine.", Sandy replied. "First off, it's Hank, not Dr. Hastings, Simon is my nephew. And second of all, you were given the wrong ultrasound yesterday. You're pregnant with quintuplets, that's why you are feeling the way you're feeling, and yes, before either one of you ask, Simon is still the father.". Matt came out to see what was happening. "What's going on?". "Simon and Sandy are pregnant with quintuplets. She's measuring 5 ½ months along.". I'll go check on your Mom, and leave you three together, Matt". "Thanks. So, while I was supposed to be grieving my sister's, and nephews' deaths,", Matt said now directing his anger at Simon and Sandy, "I'm now grieving my father's death as well, because of YOU!".
"What's going on?", asked Captain Michaels as he came up. "Matt, what's going on? How's your dad?". "Not good. He passed away. Simon here is the father of unborn quintuplet babies, plus the baby that was thought to be Martin's is Simon's as well, and from what Ruthie was telling me earlier, smoking.". "Hold up. Aaron is Simon's baby, and not Martin's?". "That's correct.", Sandy meekly replied. Matt's phone rang again. "It's Kevin, I need to answer. Captain Michaels, will you stay here with the family?". "Of course, Matt. Go call Lucy. She needs to know too.". "Lucy?" Matt asked. "OH. I'm sorry, Matt. I completely forgot.". "No, Sgt Michaels, don't worry. Mom and I said the same thing earlier, before we remembered.". "So, Simon. You want to tell me how this mess got started?".
"Well, a while back, I'd started seeing Sandy on the side. Neither she nor Rose knew that I was seeing the other one. I was using protection when I'd have sex with Rose, and I guess I got so caught up in the moment with Sandy one night that I'd just forgot. I knew she had broken up with Martin, but at the time, I didn't know that she and Martin had had sex so close together to the time that she and I had had sex. When I saw Aaron, he looked so much like Martin, that I had just assumed that Aaron was Martin's kid. Then the other night, she walked into the reception at Mom and Dad's house and said that we should talk. I didn't see that one coming.". "'That one' being that Aaron was your child, and not Martin's ?", Hank asked, as he walked up. "That's the one,", Simon replied. "I guess a little part of me feared that Aaron might be mine, but I guess I didn't want to admit it to myself.". "Okay,", Hank replied. "For now, we'll keep this between us, but you'll have to come completely clean to your family. Got it?". "You got it.". Hank looked at Sandy, "I will see you next Friday for your checkup.".
Coming back inside the room, Simon looked at Annie and said, "Mom? Can we talk?". "Why, Simon? You killed your father. What makes you think I'd want to talk to you?". "Because Dad would want you to, and Grandpa Charles would want you to. He wouldn't want me running away from you like he did from you.". "I suppose your right, Simon. Come here. Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to blow up at you. I love you, no matter what. I pray and hope that you will always remember that.". "Thanks, Mom. And I'm sorry for being such as screw up.", Simon replied, tears starting to fall down his face. "Simon-you are NOT a screw up. You might not always make the right choices sometimes, but you are NOT a screw up.".
Simon walked out into the hall to give Annie some time alone with Eric. Once outside, Matt and Kevin walked up to him. "First off, Simon,", Kevin started, "I'm sorry for blaming you.". "And second", Matt interjected, "I shouldn't have gone off on you like that. It was wrong and completely uncalled for and unnecessary.". "It's okay guys. I knew the news wouldn't be taken too well, and I should've waited until much later after the brouhaha of everything to calm down before I said anything.". "Hey guys,", came Mary's voice. "How's Dad?". "He's still in critical condition, Mary.", Matt replied giving her a hug. "Hank isn't sure when he'll wake up. Mom's in there with him now. She'll be glad that you're here. He's just down the hall, room 545 on the left". "Thanks.", Mary replied. She found the room and quietly knocked on the door frame. "May I come in?" she asked quietly. "Mary! What're you doing here? Did I call you? I'm so sorry, I didn't think to let you know.". "Mom, it's alright. Matt called to let me know.", "Mary, I'm so thankful for you and Carlos, and the family you're making. I love you.". "I love you too, Mom!". "Did Carlos and Charlie come with you?". "No, they're at the house right now with the Colonel and Grandma Ruth.". "I'm so glad that the Colonel and your Grandma Ruth could still make it out here. It's been such a comfort for them and Julie to be here for us.".
Three days after Simon's announcement, Eric sadly passed away. There wasn't anything Hank could do to help revive Eric. Much like how Matt felt for not being able to save Lucy and the twins, Hank felt the same way about not being able to save his brother-in-law. While the family told him, it wasn't his fault; he continued to feel bad anyway. On Wednesday, the Camden's , Kinkirks, Riveras, and extra family members filed into the church sanctuary. As they did, there was plenty of tears falling, not only by family members, but by parishioners, and towns people as well. Eric Camden had been a staple there in the town for many years. Presiding over the service were Sandy Jameson, who had given the eulogy at Lucy's funeral a few weeks ago, and Morgan Hamilton, Eric's seminary roommate.
As people got situated and seated in the sanctuary, Sandy called the service to order. "First of all, I want to thank so many of you who made this trip, twice in a few weeks, for the same reason, unfortunately. Annie, Kevin, Matt, Simon, Sarah, Savannah, Sam, David, Mary Carlos, Charlie, The Colonel, Ruth, Ruthie, Martin, and Ginger, I'm so so so so sorry. Having grown so close to your family, my heart is breaking in two, and even more so thinking of what each of you are going through mentally. Annie, any time you need me, give me a call. And the same goes for the rest of you. And now, unless he objects, I'll turn the service over to Morgan. Morgan?".
"I can't believe that this event is why I'm back right now. I should be back for Christmas, not a week before because of Eric's funeral.", Ben said. "It's just not fair.". "I know Ben, but I want to let you know how much I appreciate you for coming out here like this, on such short notice.", Matt told him when he picked him up from the airport. "No problem. Hey, I know we're not technically brothers, but since Kevin was married to Lucy, I still feel like you and I have become brothers.". "In a strange way, I feel the same way, Ben. I really do. I wasn't sure I was going to like Kevin too much, mostly because I wasn't around that much when he and Lucy were dating, but having been around him, and now you so much, it's nice having some extra brothers.". "Hahaha. I wasn't too sure I was going to like Kevin too much myself growing up, but Mom made me.". "Yeah, I feel you there." Matt replied. "I felt the same way when the twins were born. I'm old enough to be their dad. However, they've grown on me. Since I helped raise them so much when they were little, Sarah is asking now, when I think about having more kids.".
"Really, more kids?", Ben asked. "Don't you already have some twins on the way?". "Yes, but that isn't stopping her from thinking about it already.". "Wow. That's unreal." "Tell me about it, Ben. Tell me about it.". "Well, why is she thinking about it already, do you think?", Ben asked. "I'm not sure,", Matt replied, "it could be because her parents are getting older and she would like to give them a few more grandchildren before they pass away. Other than that, I have no idea. I'm sure Mom would be thrilled.". "Hmmm. Interesting. Oh, by the way, can I tell you something?". "Sure, Ben. Anything." "I'm dating a girl that I really like, and I think you know her." "Really? Who would that be?". "Her name is Heather Kane. I casually mentioned Lucy to her a few weeks back and when I mentioned Lucy by name, Heather's eyes got wet and she explained that the two of you dated.". "Ben! That's awesome! Congratulations.". "You aren't upset?" "Why would I be upset? Sure she's an ex-girlfriend, but she and Sarah have become friends, so we see her quite often". "I just wasn't sure if we got together with you and Sarah once in a while to eat that it would be awkward for the three of you." "No. Sarah and Heather are friends and Heather's helped Sarah brush up on her sign language which has helped both of us at the hospital.".
A few days later, Savannah and Kevin were in the house spending time with Annie. Kevin looked at Savannah and said, "Sweetie, I need to show you something.". "What's that daddy?". "Well, your Uncle Matt and Aunt Sarah had a present for you last week, but with everything that happened, we forgot to give it to you.,", he said looking at Annie who nodded her head in agreement. At that moment Matt and Sarah walked in. "Uncle Matt. Aunt Sarah! What are you doing here?". "We came to visit you, Lovebug.". "Daddy says you have a gift for me." "Oh he did, did he?", Sarah asked giving Kevin a sly smile. "You didn't give it to her yet?". "No, I didn't think it would be right of me to do it, when it was you and Matt who came up with the idea originally.". "Okay. Savannah, your uncle Matt and I have a gift for you. Would you like to open a present?". "Wow. Just me?". "Yes, kiddo, just you"., Matt replied. "Sure.". Matt grabbed the gift and handed it to Savannah to open. She opened it and her eyes started to water. "Uncle Matt, Aunt Sarah! I love this. Is this me?". "Yes, it is you kiddo.", Sarah said. "Right after you were born, your Uncle Matt and I had an "Aunt and Uncle photo shoot", with you.". "Wow. I love you guys," Savannah said giving them both a hug. "We love you too, Savannah.".
SIX MONTHS LATER-
Six months after Eric's funeral, Annie started dating again. The twins had their own dates by this time, seeing as though they were in the 7th grade now. Annie was seeing a wonderful man named Tyler who was a widower himself with eight kids of his own. There were two sets of twins, John and Joseph, and Rachel and Rebecca and then there were two more girls, Mary and Martha and two more boys, Mark and Michael. "How do you see the introductions going?", Tyler asked one night. "I don't know", Annie replied. "On one hand I could see it going like I did when my dad introduced me to his girlfriend twenty years ago-not good. I sulked, and just absolutely loathed the fact that he could just up and abandon my Mom's memory like that. The worst part, was because of my sulking, Mary got hurt. I ran out of the church on a Sunday morning, and Mary followed at Eric's suggestion and she got hit by a car. However, I came around and grew to love his new wife. I even told Eric once after dad died, that I liked her better now that he and Mom had been reunited. So, they could be like me and hate your guts and mine at first and then come around, or they could love you to pieces. The toughest two I believe will be the twins, Sam and David. Matt and Mary are both married and live out of state. Simon lives in Northern California and we don't see him very often. Ruthie, my youngest daughter is living in England and doing a study abroad program through school.". "I thought you had mentioned another daughter at one point…or maybe Eric did it once in a sermon.". "Lucy. She died last year, giving birth to a set of twins. My son-in-law Kevin, her husband, is doing fine now. He's began to date again, and was the one who actually encouraged me to come tonight.". "That's great. Kinkirk? He was a police officer here in Glenoak, right?". "He was, and then several years ago, he decided to stay at home to raise Savannah while Lucy worked at the church. Now he's back working, although he could live off of his family's money and Lucy's life insurance policy, but he says that he and Lucy made a pact years ago, that if something were to ever happen to Lucy, he would go back to work to show Savannah how a man takes care of his family. He cashed out Lucy's life insurance and put half or ¾ of it into a college fund for Savannah.". "Oh wow! That's awesome.". "It really is". "Wow. You lucked out with Kevin as a son-in-law.". "Yes I did. I think, Matt and Sarah are coming home this weekend, along with Mary and Carlos, and I believe Simon will be here too. Why don't we tell them then?". "Perfect. I can grill steaks outside if you'd like.". "Really? That'd be perfect. Let me call all of them and see who can be here.". Picking up her phone, she called Matt first. "Matt! It's Mom. How're you doing?". "Eh. We're doing okay. How're you?". "I'm doing pretty well. I wondered if you and Sarah could come home this weekend? I have something to announce and I want my family here when I do it.". "Yes. I guess this kinda ruins the surprise though.". "What surprise is that?". "We were already planning to come home this weekend.". "OH! That's so exciting. When do you get in?". "Friday about 8:00. Mary and Carlos and Charlie and the twins are coming too. They were going to leave Charlie with the Colonel and Ruth, but they're also making the trip.". The color drained from her face. "Uh oh.". "What is it, Mom?". "Oh nothing, Matt. It's nothing. I look forward to seeing you guys Friday night. Love you! Give Sarah and those boys a hug for me.". "I will Ma. Bye. Love you too.". Annie hung up with Matt. "What is it sweetheart?", he asked. "Matt told me that Eric's parents are also coming. They, Mary, Carlos, and the twins and Charlie.". "Eric's parent's being the Colonel and Mrs. John Camden?". "Yes. How did you know?". "I met them once at church and looked through my contacts, and I used to work with the colonel in the military about twenty years ago. A gruff, but nice gentleman and that Ruth, such a sweet and wonderful lady, though from some of the stories I'd heard from Eric, he thought of them to be too tough sometimes. They've got a daughter too, don't they? I can't remember her name.". "They are that, but they've mellowed out over the years. Oh yes. You're thinking of Julie. She's a school principal here in Glenoak now. She had been in New York, and alcohol caused her to break up with a boyfriend, and Eric thought he was doing the family a favor by trying to get her through the detox alone. She finally kicked the alcohol and has never looked back. She's married to a doctor here in Glenoak. The Colonel and Ruth, they adopted a boy some years ago too, and I recently found out he'd been married to one of the girls who had been living with us-Jane. He sent her divorce papers a few years ago, but she never signed them. It was too close to Valentine's Day and she said she'd wait til after. Then after she thought about it, she decided to stay with him. They're doing pretty well now, from what I hear.". "That's great. Being married while in the military is certainly no picnic.".
The next phone call was with Simon. "Hey Mom. How're you?", Simon asked when he answered the phone and saw Annie's name on the caller ID. "I'm doing well, Simon, I'm doing well. I was just calling to make sure you were still coming home this weekend.". "Yes, I wanted to surprise you, but since you asked, I'm fixing to head that way if that's alright. If I can't stay with you, I'll ask Kevin if I can stay with he and Savannah.". "Of course you can stay with me. I'd love to have you. It's been too long since I've got to see you. I hope you haven't been staying away because of what happened with dad. If that's the case, I reiterate that I love you, and I apologize profusely for trying to blame you.". "Mom. It's okay, alright? Water under the bridge. The important thing is you're my Mom, and I'm your son and we love each other unconditionally.". "Agreed. What time do you think you'll be here?". "Is six o'clock too early?". "No, that would be great actually". "Sounds good, Mom, I'll see you here in a little while.".
At the Glenoak Airport, Simon, Sandy and Aaron got off the plane and Aaron noticed a familiar looking face. "Aunt Mary! Aunt Mary!", he called out. "Mary?", Simon asked. He looked again, and shouted upon seeing Mary, "Mary! Is that you?!". "Yes.", she replied walking towards he and Sandy, giving both of them a hug. "It is so good to see you guys. I didn't know y'all were coming this weekend.". "Mom didn't tell you?", Matt asked, walking up behind Mary and giving her a hug. "Matt! It's soo good to see you. I didn't know you were going to be here, how's Sarah?", she asked thinking of her sweet sister-in-law. "Not much change, but it doesn't look good", he whispered. "She insisted on making the trip, thinking it might be her last one.". "Oh, Matt", Carlos said. "I'm so sorry. Anytime we need to baby sit or let the boys stay over so you can take care of her, let us know.". "Or if she's in the hospital and we need to come stay at your place if the boys would be more comfortable there, let us know,", Mary interjected. "Thanks guys. I love you.", Matt said. "We love you too,", Simon replied speaking for all of them giving Matt a hug. "Does Mom know?" he asked. "No, that's one reason we came this weekend. And truth be told, I'm glad everyone's coming, that way we only have to go over it once with everyone here.". "Are the Colonel and Ruth coming?', Simon asked. Mary gave Simon a questioning look. "When I talked to Mom last night, I said that you were bringing, Carlos, Charlie, the twins, and the Colonel and Ruth, and I don't see them.". "They for some reason took a different flight than we did. I tried booking them on mine, but they wouldn't hear of it.". "Mary, did you see them on yours?". "No, not that I can remember. Carlos, did you happen to see my grandparents on our flight?". "No, but I slept a lot too.". "Hmmm", they said. Kevin came walking up. "Camden Clan. It's soo good to see yall.", he said giving each of them a hug. "I've missed family. Is Ginger coming too?.". "As far as I know she is. I called her last night to reconfirm. I even offered to change my flight and fly into Phoenix and either fly or drive with her to Glenoak, but she insisted to fly herself. However, she is letting me drive her home next week." Simon said. "Hey Kevin, how're you doing?", Mary asked. "I'm doing alright I guess. I wouldn't abandon you guys. You've been my family for way too long and are Savannah's aunts and uncles whom she's been asking about for the last several weeks. She doesn't know y'all are coming. Has anyone heard from Ruthie, she was supposed to be in by now.". Matt pinged her phone. "It shows her plane landed somewhere between here and Las Vegas". "What do you mean, "somewhere between here and Las Vegas?'. There's not a place to land is there?", Mary asked starting to get a bit worried. "It just shows that's where her phone is. I'll try calling her.", he said as his Simon's phone started ringing. He stepped away to answer it. "Hello.", he said. "Is this Simon Camden?", asked the caller at the end of the line. "It is, may I ask who's calling?", Simon replied. "This is Detective John Culture with the Needles, California Highway Patrol. Do you know a Ruth Annette Camden-George?". "Yes, that's my sister.", he said his voice rising, and everyone's ears perking up. "It seems her plane went down thirty miles southwest of Las Vegas. I'm sorry sir. Is there any other family I need to identify?". "No, I'm with most of them at the Glenoak Airport and we're her brothers and sisters and we were waiting for her to come in", he said trying to hold back tears. "Our Mom doesn't know we're all here. All she was expecting was me, one of my brothers, his wife, and our grandparents this weekend". "I'll call you back when I know more, but looks like there weren't many survivors.". Simon, stunned and crying now, manages to stutter out, "Let me give the phone to my brother.", he says handing his phone to Matt. "This is Dr. Matthew Camden, who is this?". Detective Culture repeated his credentials, and what he told Simon. "Hold on, let me put this on speaker. My grandparents, and siblings and their families are all here.". Julie and Hank came walking up behind them. "Hey guys! What's going on?", Julie asked. The sergeant repeated the information he had given to Simon and Matt. Audible cries of weeping filled the airport. "I'll call this number for Simon back in about two hours, okay?". "Okay", Matt replied. "Thank you sir.". The rest were stunned. "So….how are we going to tell Mom?", Sarah asked. "Right now, I think it'll be best to keep it from her and Sam and David. We'll tell her after I receive the call back.", Simon replied accepting a hug from Julie. "Does everyone agree? We'll just tell her that Ruthie's plane is running late, and that Matt and I will go pick her up when she gets here. Colonel, I know we shouldn't lie, but Mom can't handle this much heartbreak.". "I know son. And in this case for the time being, I believe it to be the honorable thing to do. Now, let's get to your Mom's house.". Kevin got everyone to the house. "Oh my gosh! I didn't realize ALL OF YOU were coming tonight. What a surprise! OH Colonel and Ruth! It's so good to see you. And how's my baby Charlie?", she asked as she picked him up and gave him a big hug. "Hank and Julie! It's so good to see you! Where's Erica?" "She couldn't make it tonight but she should be in tomorrow sometime." Annie then, in turn, hugged and kissed the rest of her children, in-laws, and grandchildren. She started counting. "Wait a second. We're missing someone. Where's Ruthie?".
"Uh, we haven't heard, but I'll go call her. I'm pretty sure her plane was running late.", Matt said, walking off pretending to call Ruthie. While waiting on Matt's "call", Simon's phone rang. He answered it on the first ring. "Hello?", he said. "Hello, is this Simon Camden?" Detective Culture asked. "This is he.". (Annie had gone upstairs to make up the beds leaving the Camden children and spouses downstairs in the kitchen. Matt walked in, his mouth dropping when he saw Simon on the phone. "Anything?", he asked Kevin. "Not yet. He's still waiting on an answer to his question.". "No. No, no, no, no. This can't be true. Um, just one second, let me step outside", as he motioned for Kevin, Matt and Hank to follow him to the backyard. He put it on speaker phone, and told him, "My older brother Dr. Matt Camden, and my brother-in-law Kevin Kinkirk, and my Uncle, Dr. Hank Hastings are here with me, sir.". "Kevin. As in Kevin Kinkirk? Former Glen Oak Police Department officer?". "Yes, Simon said. "How did you know?". "When going through your sister's things, we found a list of phone numbers, and three of them belonged to Kinkirks-Kevin, Lucy and Ben. Who are they in relation to your sister?". "Lucy was our sister, she passed away almost a year ago while giving birth to a set of twins, and Kevin was her husband, and Ben is Kevin's brother and really an extended member of our family and is a fire chief in Buffalo, New York.". "Oh my God. I'm so sorry. I think I remember reading the information posted on a blog honoring the families of police officers across the country. Officer Kinkirk, did you know that there was a fundraiser set up for you and your daughter Savannah, and that a total of $12.2 MILLION dollars had been raised?".
"What?! No, I had no idea.". "I'll send you the information tomorrow, but right now we need to get Ruthie taken care of.". "This is Ruthie's uncle, Hank Hastings. What kind of injuries are we looking at officer?" Hank asked. "Well, we're not sure. I'm sorry to have to tell you, but your niece, sister, and sister-in-law has deceased. Is there a local police officer there in Glenoak that can help get her body back to Glenoak?". "Captain George Michaels with the GlenOak Police Department should be able to help. He was my boss and a long time friend of the Camden family.", Kevin replied. "Alright I'll get a hold of him and let him take over. Thank you, Camdens, Kinkirks, and Hastings'." "Thank you officer.", Kevin, Matt, Simon, Hank replied in unison. Mary stepped out on the back porch. "Any news?". "It's not good.", Simon replied giving Mary a hug. "We might as well go and tell everyone at once.". They went inside and Matt rounded everyone up announcing a family meeting in the Camden living room. "First off if anybody has some exciting news to share please raise their hands.". Annie, Ginger, and the Colonel, Ruth, and Kevin all raised their hands. "Okay. We'll get to that in a little bit, but I was just curious.". "Where's Ruthie? Do you know where she is, Matt?", David asked. "Yes I know buddy, but it's bad news.". Sam and David went over and crawled in Matt's lap. The two had grown especially close to Ruthie in recent months and were protective of her. Knowing how close she and Matt had been, they immediately felt sorry for Matt. "What happened to my baby girl?", Annie asked. "It appears that her plane crashed between here and Las Vegas about the time, Sarah, Mary, Carlos, the kids, the Colonel, Ruth, Ginger, Simon, Sandy and I all got to the airport. I thought she was on the next flight in, but then Simon got the phone call and then he handed the phone off to me.". He took a second to catch his breath. "The Colonel agreed that until we knew more information, that we shouldn't tell you. Apparently her body was finally identified. Her husband Micah was supposed to be coming with her, but no one can get a hold of him.". "What do you mean, 'her husband'", Annie inquired. "Well Mom, it appears that Ruthie got married while in England, unbeknownst to all of us, even Simon.". "I'm sorry to interrupt Matt, but apparently she was pregnant, and the babies are still alive, according to this text I just got", Mary spoke up next. "What!? She was pregnant too?", the Colonel asked. "I guess so, but I swear I didn't know about that.", Mary said. "Wait, wait, wait.", Carlos said. "Did you say "babies" plural, as in more than one?". "Yes," Mary replied. "We didn't know either.", Matt said, pointing to he and Sarah. "Simon, she talked to you all the time growing up, did you know anything?". "No, the last time I talked to her was last weekend and she reassured me that she was fine, told me she loved me and wanted me to let the rest of you guys know that she loved y'all too. I thought something sounded off, but I didn't want to push the issue right then. I figured I'd ask her after we got to the airport.".
"Matt. Do you and Sarah have any other news you would like to share with the family?" Annie asked. "Yes. While I've got everyone here, Sarah and I decided that now would be the time to tell all of you that she has cancer. As of right now, everything looks good. Her doctor referred us to a wonderful oncologist who remembers Hank from his pre-med days.". They looked at Matt and Sarah with shocked faces. "Cancer?", Kevin asked, getting up to go and hug Sarah. Immediately, Kevin was interested because Ben had just told him the same thing and he was waiting for the right time to tell the family. He had been given permission from Ben. "What kind, if you know and don't mind me asking?". "Cervical, it looks like. We'll find out next week.". "Does that mean you'll have to have a you-know-what, and not be able to have any more children?", Annie asked trying to keep the word hysterectomy away from the boys since they were still on the younger side. "We don't know yet. We also have some good news though, don't we Matt?". "Yes", Matt replied. "We are pregnant again. We're expecting triplets in a few months!". "Woo-hoo!" said Simon. Cheers of exultation came up from everybody. "Kevin, what's wrong?", Mary asked recognizing that the look on Kevin's face was not good. "I hate to let this be a roller coaster of good news and bad news, but I talked to Ben last night. It turns out that he has been diagnosed with cancer as well. He's waiting to get some test results back and go from there. He was hoping, Matt and Sarah, that one of you could help steer him in the direction of a great oncologist.". "Of course, Kevin. We'll see what we can do.".
"Well, if we're going to be heading in the direction of good news, then it's my turn.", Annie said. "Yall might have noticed someone, a gentleman, sitting with me in church the last few Sundays. I know Matt has noticed, because he's made a comment on the live Facebook feed. His name is Tyler, and he started to talk to me a few months ago, and we started dating. We weren't sure how you all would feel, but we wanted to tell you sooner rather than later. And as we're both growing older, we have decided to get married. He has eight kids, two boys and six girls, so boys, it looks like you'll be outnumbered for a change. Colonel, he said he had heard about you in a sermon or two of Eric's over the years and looked in his contacts and told me that you were his commanding officer and a father figure to him. He really wants your blessing since my Dad is gone, and you were Eric's dad. He said it wouldn't feel right. And just so you all know, he doesn't want me to be taken away from you guys. He knows how close we are and how close the Colonel, Ruth, Julie, and I are and doesn't want to break it up.". "Oh Mom! That's awesome!", the kids all shouted at once. "Sam and David, how do you two feel?". "I'm okay with it, Mom. I'm happy as long as you're happy.", David said. "Does this mean that you'll forget about dad?", Sam asked. "Oh no, baby. That'll never happen. I've got seven immediate reminders of your father right here in this house, plus several more reminders upstairs and three more down here with your Aunt Julie, and the Colonel and Ruth. Okay, now that that's out of the way, we need to focus on Ruthie and Micah. Does anyone have a phone number for him?" Annie asked. The kids all looked at their phones and no one had a number. Kevin's phone rang. "Hello?", Kevin responded. "Is this Kevin Kinkirk?", came the voice at the other end of the line. "Yes, this is Kevin Kinkirk. May I ask who's calling?". "My name is Micah and I was married to your sister-in-law Ruthie.". "I just heard about you and my sister-in-law. How may I help you?". "Well, I'm in Glenoak and would like to meet the Camden family before going to the hospital to identify the body. Or what's left of the body.". "Sure. It's 2545 Logan's Way.". "Good. I'll be there soon.", and hung up without waiting for a reply. "Well, that was Ruthie's husband and he's headed here.".
A few minutes later, the doorbell rang. Matt answered the door. "I'm or I was, Ruthie's husband. I'm Micah." "I'm Matt. I was her oldest brother. Please come on in.". "Thank you.". He walked in and Matt just hugged him on impulse. "Thank you, Matt. I needed that.". "I think I did too", Matt said. He brought Micah into the living room. "Everyone, this is Micah, Ruthie's husband." "Hi, everyone.", Micah said. They all said hi in unison. "Micah, this is our Mom, Annie; there on the couch next to her, are our dad's parents, the Colonel John and his wife Ruth Camden whom my sister and your wife Ruthie was named after, to their right is our brother-in-law Kevin, he's a Glenoak Police officer. On this other couch, is our sister Mary, our brother Simon, and the two he's holding are our baby brothers, Samuel and David. And next to Simon, is my wife Sarah. Behind Sarah, is Mary's husband Carlos, next to him is our Mom's stepmom, Ginger.. All of our kids are upstairs sleeping.".
"Micah, it's so nice to meet you, even though I apologize it's at this time, but when did you and Ruthie meet?". "We met almost a year ago. I was working in a coffee shop while she was going to school in England. She seemed to fit in rather well with the locals. She loved the culture. We finally started to talk about our families, and I wanted to meet you all, because I had a feeling very early on that she was the one I had been praying for. Then we went on and got married even though she was disappointed that Matt and Sarah couldn't be there for us like she had been for them.". "Okay, time for another round of good news. Kevin?", Matt asked. "Well, I got a phone call yesterday saying that apparently there had been a fundraiser set up after Lucy died and a total of $12.2 million dollars had been raised that I was unaware of, and that I can cash it out should I choose to do so.". "Wow! Are you serious?", Mary asked. "Yes. And Matt and Sarah, I'd like to help you out if you'd take the offer. Lucy apparently put in the policy that 10% would go to start a college fund for Savannah, 10% into a college fund for your kids and 10% a piece for Sam and David to go into a college fund for the two of them.". Now it was Annie's turn to freak out. "Do what?! Are you serious?". "Yes Mom, I'm serious.". "Thank you, Kevin!", Sam said, jumping up and giving him a hug. David, the quiet one, just smiled and said a polite thank you. "No, there's no way you're serious. Kevin, come on, really?" Sarah asked.
"Wow. Kevin. What a nice idea! Thank you so much. How thoughtful of the two of you.", Annie said. "Well, it was Lucy's idea and I had no knowledge of it.". "Oh, Micah! I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to leave you out by yourself. How're you?". "Well, I found out that my wife has died in a plane crash, she was pregnant with twins, who're still alive, and now I'm sitting in her family's' living room, so it's kinda strange right now.". "Micah, you were married to my daughter and gave me apparently, two grandchildren from the daughter I least expected to be able to give me grandchildren. You've blessed me immensely.". "You see, growing up, and I know this is going to be gross to talk about, so Sam and David, why don't you two go into the kitchen and get some ice cream, okay?". "Okay." "If there's not enough in the kitchen, there's several in the freezer in the garage.". The boys scampered off. "As a teenager, she had trouble during almost every period, and at one point in the twelfth grade, her doctor thought that she wouldn't be able to have children, or if she did, she wouldn't be able to carry them to term. I know it's a bit early, but have you thought of names?". "I haven't had time to think of that stuff yet." "I haven't begun to even start the process of comprehending that part yet. What do yall suggest?".
"Well, with Simon and I being the closest to Ruthie, I think we can help. What do you say, Simon?", Matt asked. "Oh, yes! I think she'd be mad if we didn't. What about Zoe Anne? Anne in honor of Mom, and Zoe, because I just think that'd be a name she'd pick out. What do you think, Matt?", Simon asked. "Yes! Zoe Anne! That's perfect and so Ruthie. Do we know the genders of the others?" Matt asked. "No, so I want you both to come with me."
Simon, Matt, and Micah went to the morgue. When they got there, Matt took over as Micah and Simon were too overcome with emotion to speak. The receptionist, Tammy, saw them come in. "May I help you?", she asked. "We're here to identify a body.", Matt replied. Tammy asked, "Who are you in relation to the deceased?". "He, (pointing to Simon), and I are the deceased person's brothers, and the other man over there is her husband.". "What is the name?" "Ruth Camden-George, or her first name may be under Ruthie." "Follow me.". The three of them followed the receptionist down a cold hall way. Once inside, they walked over to the freezer containing bodies of deceased persons waiting to be identified by friends and family. The receptionist opened a door and pulled a body out. Before unzipping the body bag, she said, "Your wife and sister may not look like you remember her. Just keep that in mind." "Yes ma'm", the boys replied. She unzipped the bag down to just above the chest so the face could be identified. "Oh yes, that's definitely Ruthie!", they all three exclaimed in unison. "Alright, would any of you three happen to have a recent photo to confirm the identification?" They all three pulled out pictures from their wallets. Thankfully Matt had given Simon his copy of their family picture the day before. "Yes", the three of them replied. "That's her.". Ruthie had made sure that Micah had a copy of the picture in case something happened. Since he hadn't met the family before then, it was a great help, because Ruthie had wrote their names on the back and put where they were in line.
Next they went to the hospital. The quadruplets had been saved. While everyone, including Micah, thought that Ruthie would just be having twins, there ended up being quadruplets. The names he had chosen with the help of the Camden family. Rebecca Anne, John Matthew, Eric Joseph, and Joy Jennifer. It was one of the best and worst times. "Oh, Micah. I just love the names." "Micah, any time you need help with ANYTHING, please call one of us and we'll be there in a heartbeat." Matt told him. "Thank you, Matt. I appreciate that more than you know. So, how do we prepare a funeral for the best girl I know?". "Well, with it being Ruthie, it'd have to be quite exciting. Was she giving riding lessons? She LOVED horses growing up, and our parents put her in a private school that had horse stables.". "She had just started a few months ago, knowing she'd have to sit out for a bit with the kids being born, but wanted to make some money as long as she could.".
"This will be the most positive and happiest funeral I've ever been to", Matt said.
