Blue Skies Forever
When I'm in the air, away from...this earth, when I'm not land-bound, it's like I've gone through a window... a portal of reality, and then out the other side...and I'm floating along the seam of the universe, and I'm free in the solitaire of centuries. And no one knows my name, my gender. When I'm in that space between heaven and earth, where so few women have been, people don't know what to make of me. They call me a loner. They say I'm different, difficult to understand, cool, aloof, withdrawn, preoccupied. Of course they are right. I'm worse than that. I am a dangerous women. I am a determined women. I am not normal. I live for life at the edge...where nothing stagnates, nothing's the same. I walk that high wire into the great adventure. And I love every minute of it. This is what I've always wanted. And I have no patience waiting for the times to change to catch up with me. They will never catch up. (beat) When I am in the air...I am where I belong...in that place where nothing stands still, everything moves, and it's never boring. Everything is always new. It's always the first time in the theater of angels, of birds... the kingdom of wings. My body feels heavy on land. My bones are solid. (beat) When I am up there soaring... through the fingers of God with my hand on my throttle, I am beyond woman or man, above gender, and the lust of earthly sex, the longings of simple skin. When I am up there in the beautiful blindness of clouds, I am above it all... of having to fit in, of being accepted and desired, of being what's expected. I am the unexpected, the unforeseen. I am your astonishment. I am on the other side. Where no one judges you by the shape of your body, the color of your skin, the lines on your face, the length of your hair, or the cut of your clothes. I am released. Free. (beat) I don't want to land. I want more space. I don't want to land. (beat) I always expected everything, and I ignored the rules, the rules against women. The roles against women. I was not born to follow rules or to play a role, for anyone. I was born to search, to push, to try something new, to let other women know they must not be caged. To give them freedom. To tell them they are not playthings but players. It's all there for them. The only price they pay to get it is courage. Once you have courage the doors are open. And you go through them. And once you go through these doors, you are in the company of daring women, dangerous women, dear women who will inspire you, challenge you, lead you to the horizons of your dreams. (beat) Honor knows no gender. Courage knows no gender. (beat) I have stood before hundreds of thousands and said these words and it was written that I wore a blue dress with matching necklace, that I was gracious, almost lovely, thoroughly feminine, not like a boy at all. I have flown beside my sisters who have crashed and died in the pursuit of their independence and their dreams, and It is called a Powder Puff Derby, the Sweethearts of the Air. We are not America's sweethearts. And, no, we are not like boys at all. (beat)
I have paid my dues to become this women.
I married my promoter who raised the money to pay
for my plane.
I will use it to leave him.
I will use it to everyone,
Even myself.
I did not love him nor his earthbound sex,
But I would have spread my legs for the Devil
So I could spread my wings.
(beat)
They call my plane Electra,
Electra who longed for her father.
I long for no man... I long for air.
I yearn for freedom at any price.
At the ultimate price.
I lift
I thrust
I pitch I roll
I spin
I glide above you
I am
Airborne
Out of your reach
Away from your eyes
Closer to God.
Forever.
The sky is my lover, my destiny.
They call me Lady Lindy,
But I am no lady
My name is Amelia, And I am
a Flier.
