I grab the ledge of the roof feeling my legs slip as I land unevenly, my ankles catching the brunt of the landing. I inhale sharply at the pain that my incompetence created and pull myself up.

Looking up for an instant, I see the moon casting a beam of light on me like a prisoner who tried to escape from her jail. I glare at it. How many times has she tried to catch me, how many times has she tried to silence me, to lock me up forever, I wonder when she'll stop….. After all, nothing lasts forever.

I walk over to the concrete ledge and stare out at her. My rival. My advesary. The one who torments my life on a daily basis and yet gives me a reason to live it. How I loathe this game that she plays with me, that she more often plays with him. I take a few steps forward. She hurt us both, I realized. And in anger, we gave in to her; emotionless, thick-skinned, fools that we were. We let her into our hearts, engulfing the empty frames within us.

She gave us purpose, reason, a desire to win. But there was a provision, happiness would only be seen as a fairytale, love would be something we could never obtain, and revenge would be the only thing that would bring relief.

I peer across the ledge, leering at her. How I detest her now- where before I would have greedily accepted the comfort she offered. The wind picks up and I shutter, wrapping my arms against my purple costume to gain the slightest bit of warmth. I move a little closer to the ledge, my feet now balanced at the end.

She took too much away from me. She stole lives in an instant without a whim of regret. She molded us into her toys; toys that would fear her, question her, recoil at the slightest glimpse of her.

I spread out my arms, closing my eyes. I will not be her puppet. I jump, feeling the air sweep through me, my raven hair whipping through my face. My heart is racing. And for an instant I think that she will consume me, but I open my eyes, determination replacing the sad smile on my face. I grab my whip, thrusting it onto a rail as it swiftly wraps around the rusted metal bar. I land on my feet, with a solid stance on the ground. I will not let her win today. I will never let her win, but then again….nothing lasts forever
