George crept down the dark ally carefully and quietly. It would never do for the King of Thieves to wake up. George snorted. Not that he would wake- His Majesty was known for sound sleeping. One more reason he needed to be replaced.
When he reached the wall that surrounded the courtyard of the king's house, he took out the rope he had tucked in his belt. He threw the grappling hook to the top of the 15 foot high wall. The hook caught on the wall silently- George had padded the iron so it wouldn't clank on the stone wall.
He smiled in satisfaction. Usually it took several tries before the hook caught. He was getting better at this. Grasping the rope in both hands, he climbed to the top of the wall and coiled the rope up again.
He eyed the distance roof doubtfully. It was 3 feet across, and probably a foot higher. And there was no place to get a running start. George winced, and jumped, with all of the strength he could muster.
He made it, barely, scrabbling for a hold a moment on the sloping roof. He paused, wondering if anyone had heard him. Nothing stirred. George sighed thankfully, climbed over the roof, and jumped to the next building. This was the one the king should be sleeping in. He scanned the roof, looking for a trapdoor, and found one. He climbed over to it, and examined it for locks. There were none. George shook his head in disbelief. How overconfident could this man be?
He lifted the trapdoor an inch, checking for traps or guards. This was too easy. A guard sat dozing in a chair at the far side of the room.
George slipped into the room and his knife to the guard's throat, waking him with the other hand. The guard woke and raised his head.
"'Fingers!" George exclaimed softly.
"It's about time we had a new king," whispered 'Fingers.
George grinned and crossed the room to the king's bed. He pressed the blade to the man's throat, using the other hand to cover the king's mouth.
The king woke with a muffled exclamation. He soon quieted when he saw the knife, though.
George smiled. "I'm thinkin' maybe you'll lettin' me be king for a while."
