"This is the doll?"

Never once I thought I would have been hired by some old granny to deal with a paranormal activity. As a Ninja, I thought that many things could be rationalized within the crappy natural laws of this world.

I have heard lots of bullshit, such as Aliens trying to attain godhood, robots made by scientists trying to harness the power of being a cool ninja and... well, this one was a bit of a surprise nonetheless. The mission was classified as D-Rank, but many had just dropped it the moment they got a glance at the object of quite a lot of unease within the corps: a doll. Not just a normal doll, but one of those creepy-looking ones that clearly have either a malevolent spirit or a demon stuck inside.

I could just tell at first glance, and I had no issue at believing that this was indeed a possessed item. I turned to the old woman that had bought the doll from a suspicious merchant in the nearby market, the man having disappeared after selling her this despite the best efforts put by the police force to find him for interrogation.

Ah yes, isn't it an interesting spin to the usual antics of mine? Rather than dealing with something that could be explained through some BS logic, I was dealing with what looked to be something out of my knowledge and understanding. Well, most of my understanding. Japanese possessed dolls, I heard two stories about them in my previous life. Both quite grim to the point of reaching international awareness to some extents.

This one reminded me much of the 'Okiku' doll I heard much about a long time ago. Not in terms of background since I knew close to nothing to the story owned by the current doll, but her appearance was just like that one. Straing long black hair, pale face, eyes so dark that one could almost feel an intense stare aimed back at them and... a degree of sadness and anger that was clearly unnatural for a normal door.

"T-That's it, yes."

"Her," I quietly corrected, knowing that trying to anger the ghost would be plain stupid. And I was quite confident that calling her a 'it' would just piss her off a fair bit. "And I would like to be left alone with her for the time being if it's fine."

The woman didn't look that calm about it. Leaving someone alone with a possessed doll? I bet that sounded preposterous but... let's be honest, I had to see for myself how bad the situation was. The woman had mentioned standard paranormal stuff like things moving like chairs and the table in the living room, but also a few sightings of a girl wearing the same clothes and similar appearance.

Despite the urge to keep by, the woman nodded and left. I was alone in that room with the doll. There was a lot of silence, but I had a growing feeling that it wasn't meant to last. So, rather than wait for something to happen, I decided to 'break the ice'.

"I wish to apologize for the poor lady. She is a bit shaken by the powers you have manifested. It's quite interesting, you know. The fact that you are able to do so much despite having no genuine physical manifestation," I commented, speaking up and addressing the doll herself. "Can you please communicate with me? I would like to know your story."

Something knocked at the door, causing me to turn in surprise and... as I did and then turned back to the doll, I was surprised to find out that it was no longer a doll. Rather, a little girl with quite the same appearance as the doll but instead of proper eyes two pools of darkness that were releasing tiny trails of black all over her cheeks and her skin was... blue. Like sickly blue.

"You are Shimura Danzou. Aren't you?"

I frowned, not expecting the ghost to know about me.

"That's correct, yes."

"I am Kokomi," She mumbled, gaze lowering to the ground. "I died a few years ago."

"Hello Kokomi," I greeted her quietly. "Can you tell me how you died?"

...

There was a long silence after that, I thought I had pressed too hard on the subject but-

"I tripped. While a big cart was passing."

"Is that so? Are you... Are you upset by the memory?"

"I am. Papa was sad. Really sad," Kokomi mumbled. "Then strange man took me and said he could resurrect me."

"...But?"

"But he lied. He said Papa knew I was going to be back. Papa didn't know. Papa didn't see me when I was brought to him. Papa... is no longer alive."

I gritted my teeth at that. "I am sad to hear that."

"I know," The ghost remarked. "I can feel it. Do you miss your papa too?"

"...At times. Not always. Not because I don't love him but... I have to focus on mom."

She smiled bitterly. "I never met my Mama. Papa always said she loved me lots, but never met her."

"Hm, I want to believe she truly loved you, Kokomi," I added with a hint of amusement. Her smile widened. "Say, do you think you can help me find the strange man? I know this is not going to fix your situation, but if he is still around then maybe he is doing something like that with other people and I would like to stop that."

"That would be bad," She mumbled, the child slowly crawling up to me. A bit of a creepy sight, but then I felt her cold head nuzzle against my chest as she turned around and sat on my lap. "I'll help, but you have to carry me."

After she said that, it took a blink for her frame to be back to look like a doll.

"I see, then let's try to find the strange man."

I picked her up and I was pretty much scaring half of Konoha through the day as I wandered with Kokomi in my hold. The malicious energy could be perceived by animals and people, all stopping to stare at me as I walked by a nearby group of officers patrolling the streets, convincing them to tag along as I followed Kokomi's whispered instructions.

I ultimately found a small hut by one of the areas away from Konoha's main streets. It looked abandoned, but Kokomi was certain of it. He was there. And, as we soon would confirm by walking inside, the merchant the elderly woman had mentioned was there.

"Y-You- How did you- The doll- the girl... How?!"

"I think you should be more worried about what you will face for being accessory to murder and practice of malicious arts within Konoha."

"I-I can explain, I was just- I was just creating entertainment for the upcoming- GAH!"

The kick between his legs was enough to stop the crap he was talking about and a punch on the side of his skull sent him to the ground for a quick trip to nap-land. I turned to the agents and they nodded as they went to pick up the unconscious bastard and carried him to an interrogation room. I wanted all he knew on this unusual magic learned so we can find a fix for Kokomi and other potential victims of his.

As the group left, I looked down on Koko and I saw her ghostly form back.

"You... did it. You took the strange man away."

"I did. But now, I have a question to ask since you may have to stay around some more and I think the old lady may not be able to take care of you?"

Her head tilted adorably. "What is it?"

"Would you like to share a room with another girl at my home?"

Ina didn't mind making a new friend and have her share the room with her, plus, as she was quick to say while hugging the doll, it was like having a permanent 'sleepover'.
