*Disclaimer* I don't own Final Fantasy 8, happy?
Squall stared into his goblet, watching the wine swirl around as he stared silently. He listened to all of the sounds, fromg the cling of glasses to a single note on a violin in the orchestra. He wondered why he was there, despite it being his job now.
Squall watched the couples dancing for a brief moment, before turning his attention to the giant, curving window that was the ceiling. Thousands of stars sparkled like diamonds in the sky, and he watched with content as a star shot across the sky, leaving a trail of glittering light behind it.
Once again, Squall looekd at the dancers. But instead of seeing the dancers, he saw a girl. She was as pale as the moon above him, with sleek dark hair that splashed onto her shoulders. The white dress she wore fit her perfectly, as she looked up at the sky with joyful brown eyes at the same shooting stars.
She looked at Squall and smiled warmly, holding up one slim finger as she pointed to the heavens. Squall stared back at her, his eyes the same muted gray-blue with the same, muted expression. The girl walked towards him, and Squall couldn't help but notice that spring in her step as she came closer.
Those warm, brown eyes stared into his face curiously for a moment, and then she smiled again.
"You're the best looking guy here." She said bluntly, and Squall instantly remembered the scar along the bridge of his nose.
Squall lowered his gaze, hoping that a few strands of his chestnut colored hair would cover the scar, and she wouldn't see.
That girl just wouldn't go away, no matter how hard Squall tried ignoring her. He wasn't familiar with the fluttering feeling in his belly when he looked into those big, brown eyes of hers and saw her smiling as she chattered hopelessly.
"You will like me! You will like me!"
Squall finally admitted it. He couldn't help it anymore.
"I can't dance."
The girl laughed softly and looked up at him again with glittering eyes.
Squall thought, and found himself being dragged onto the dance floor.
The girl took one of Squall's hands and put it on ehr waist. She took the other and held it firmly in hers.
"Just follow my lead, soldier boy." The girl said, and smiled up at Squall's face innocently.
Squall moved jerkily, but the girl's face reflected only patience as she led him through the dance. The only time she looekd annoyed was when they knocked into another couple.
"Watch where you're going, girly." The teen boy said, giving them a nasty look and dancing away from them with his partner.
The girl stuck out her tongue.
"Nevermind that..." The girl said, and looked up into Squall's face again.
Squall looked into those eyes, and finally remembered.
They danced, and every step was perfect and smooth. The girl looked overjoyed, and a bit relaxed. She spun herself into Squall's arms again, and Squall caught her a bit off guard.
They stared into each other's eyes, in the position they had been in when they started, only much closer.
Bright flashes from above caught Squall's attention, and he looked up curiously to see fireworks. The girl watched them for a brief moment, and her gaze went beyond Squall to a group by the wall. Squall looked at her with a bit of question in his face as she smiled and gave his hand a pat.
"You're a great dancer." She said softly, and walked off.
Squall watched her go, and almost felt a smile coming on.
"So are you, pale angel..."
