He'd Still Try

He lifted his eyes to the sky. It was pitch black when the many clocks strewn about the town rung twelve times in honor of the hour. The ebony clouds bathed the sky in a forbidding darkness which devoured the moon and stars. Silence hung like a deep fog in the streets. No lights protruded the dark, no sounds penetrated the unwelcoming silence.
There was a feeling of mystification and unwonted apprehension in the heavens. It seemed to rain down upon the Earth, consuming all that stood on its surface. And yet in the midst of it all, fearlessly, courageously, wonderingly, he stood there. Amber eyes, shielded with glasses, and taking in all dark at once.
His body shifted slightly; his eyes scanning all that set out above him. For a moment, he stilled. His gaze fixed on one small speck of light in the midst of the clouds. Slowly. his eyes closed.
Still in his mind, that light glowed on, and on. It moved about, this way and that behind his eyelids. In the very depth of his soul, of his heart, of his mind, he knew its every move though he wasn't really seeing it. That light. He knew what it was; though no one else did. His fixations and observations meant nothing to them. And he had to wonder if they ever would.
No. They wouldn't.
Within moments the clouds exploded in an array of wind and water. Rain poured down, pelting the Earth in a shower of heaven's tears. The boy opened his eyes and lowered his gaze, shielding his face with an arm. And though the rain left him soaked and freezing, he walked on in it. He wasn't sure if it would stop, nor did it matter to him. It could rain forever and he would think nothing of it.
The same light appeared again and he spied it from the corner of his eye. He paused, stopping instantly. It was closer this time, close enough to make evidence. Instinctively, his hand groped into his pocket, pulling out a black camera. He raised it to his eye, located the viewfinder and aimed it for the light.
His finger fell down upon the button and a flash of luminosity lit up the dark for a moment. The moving light paused, then disappeared into the darkness... But he'd gotten it on camera. He was sure this time! The world would have to believe him now!
But the next thing he knew, the photo had slid out of the camera and splashed into the puddle of watery mud below.
His agonizing scream filled the air.
His eyes glazed and unfocused, he walked on, his boots tracking mud along the sidewalk. He didn't know what he was going to do now. He'd wasted his night and nothing was left to do but return home. How could he do this? His entire world was at stake!
But something inside him told him it wasn't. Something told him the Earth was safe and sound, even within the clutches of the alien race, it seemed safe. What was the threat? One small alien, and nothing more? Sure, there were bound to be others but they hadn't come. He sighed, maybe he didn't need to protect Earth. Maybe his use was doing nothing for the planet.
But it didn't matter. He'd still try.
