****************************
She turns the knobs a little more
and the water heats up,
turning her skin from alabaster white
to pink.
She lets the water sting and burn.
She's trying to bring herself back to reality.
She runs her hands over her hair,
rinsing and re-rinsing,
trying to wash away
all of her emotions from the past
few days.
She shuts off the water
and stands there,
watching the steam curl around her
like whispers in
the night.
She wraps herself up in her robe
as if hiding from some kind of invisible guilt,
and she rubs a towel on her hair to dry it,
squeezing her eyes shut and wondering
if she cares enough to
risk everything.
She opens the door and creeps
through her bedroom,
pausing next to the bed
just long enough
to pull a blanket over
the shoulders of
the man sleeping there.
