"The chocobos..there all...gone..." the little girl looked out the window upon a field of swaying grass. She turned to an older boy. "Where have they gone? Will they be back? Will they??"
"I don't know..." the boy also looked out. But instead of sorrow, his eyes were full of curiousity. It was true, the chocobos were gone. The grand birds that strode across the field every morning for the song.
The gold chocobo started it.
joined in the silver. The blue turned it's head to the sky and sung.
it sang magnificently. The boys heart soared. They're so alive, he thought as he listened.
the female sang loudest, and most proud. He looked at the girl, whos grin was wide, and her eyes were bright.
"See that? They are singing to you." the boy whispered in her ear. She turned to him. "Listen. They warble just for you."
"They do??" The girl smiled as the boy nodded. "Their song is beautiful! Maybe..I could sing like them?"
"You could, Julia. You have a beautiful voice." her older brother told her. She hugged him.
"Are they here every morning?" Julia asked. "And they sing just for me, Damien?"
"Of course! They only sing for the most beautiful, and loviliest sisters." Damien told her. She smiled.
The gold chocobo stood next to the female, singing as the sun rose.
"There not here, Damien. Why? I thought they would sing for us every morning?" Julia's eyes began to water. He hugged her.
"Winter comes, Julia. The chocobos will have to find a warmer place to live, and to sing." Damien explained to her.
"But- but! They could stay with us! We have warm places in our house!" Julia protested. Damien shook his head.
"No, Julia. The chocobos are wild and free. They need to BE free, Julia. Please don't cry." Damien hugged her. She cried. "They'll be back."
Elsewhere:
"The songs of the chocobos rock!" the little boy threw a fist in the air. His mother smiled.
"The chocobos have returned, Laguna. Are you happy?" she asked. He turned, his smile full.
"Am I EVER!" Laguna smiled. They've returned!
