"Crucio," hissed the sinister figure. Standing before him the old lady vainly tried to shield herself with her hands, but nothing could protect her from the overwhelming pain. Writhing in agony, she collapsed, unable to do anything but give into the misery. And then it stopped. Helpless, unable to run away, she gazed up into the eyes of her attacker. Two slits, like that of a snake, glared hatefully back at her. He had killed Lily and James, and now he had come to kill her. Determined to hide her fear, she spoke defiantly, "What do you want?" "You know what I want. Tell me where he is," he demanded. Suddenly understanding, her eyes flashed with anger. She had promised Dumbledore that she would protect little Harry Potter. She would never betray her friend's son, she would never tell.

Sirius Black cautiously nudged open the door of number eight Privet Drive. His canine sense telling him that something wasn't right. Several cats ran for cover at the sight of his bulking figure. Not wanting to frighten his old friend he resumed his human form. "Arabella," he called shakily, "Are you there?" As he entered the dark room he was filled with dread when he saw his friend's motionless body, sprawled on the floor. "Oh God, please, not again," he pleaded, running to the limp figure of Arabella Figg. Once again he had arrived too late. Another of his old crowd was gone. He would have to return to Dumbledore with this devastating news. Lord Voldemort had returned, stronger and more powerful than ever.
