"And I'm going with her." Faith said, backing me up with much needed support, and also silencing everyone's arguments about how it was so far away and how it wasn't safe and that we couldn't afford for me to go off to college in Connecticut. I think they were a bit shocked.
Well, they were about to get a whole hell of a lot more shocked.
"The mail came today. I got in. Full scholarship." I said, handing the admittance letter to Buffy.
"When did you apply to Yale?" Buffy asked, apparently blocking out the rest for now, while studying the words in disbelief. Sometimes I think Buffy is more like Mom than she realizes.
With a shrug I said "It was a longshot. I wasn't sure if I could get my grades up high enough by the end of the year. I sent in a video interview."
"Yeah B, she worked her ass off for this." Faith said. The comment only earned her a glare and a funny little noise from my sister. I think she caught herself about to growl like some sort of cave woman and swallowed it instead, heh. Maybe she won't go ballistic and kill us after all.
"And with the money I saved up we're going to get an apartment together..." I said, pausing to make eye contact with each and every one of them before I continued. I'm serious about this and I want them to know it. "I love her. I want us to be together and I hope that you guys can accept that. I'm not a little girl anymore."
~*~
I didn't mean to keep this a secret, it just sort of...happened. And it's not like I ever expected it. One minute we're just hanging out while I made my Home Ec final and then next we're kissing like crazy on my living room floor!
In the days and weeks that followed it didn't seem like any time was the 'right time' to tell everyone about us so we kept sneaking off by ourselves. Which wasn't really that hard since neither Faith or I are part of that core group in the Scoobies. I was still the bratty kid sister who just happened to be made from the energy of a mystical Key and the blood of a Slayer. And Faith, well Faith had many things to atone for with the gang. Things that aren't so easy to forgive and even harder to forget it seems.
But Faith makes me happy. Happier than I've been in a long time. We laugh, and talk, and oh god is the sex great. You know what they say; Time stolen is the sweetest.
~*~
So this is where you came in.
Slipping my fingers through Faith's I wait for everyone to get over their shock and the slight tremble I feel through the palm of my hand from her allows me to step up and be the strong one for her.
No matter what they said (but please, oh please be okay with this!) we were going to Connecticut and we were going to be together.
Time stolen may be the sweetest but sooner or later you've got to walk in the sun.
