Eternally
I envy her for sleeping. Yet I love to just sit here and watch her. When she sleeps, she has no shields; she doesn't have to think about the welfare of her crew, our crew. When she sleeps, she is not the captain. She is Kathryn. My Kathryn. How many years I waited to be able to say that. To be able to take her in my arms, and tell her that I love her. We have no fear of the consequences, as long as we know that we will face them together. Two people. One soul. One love.
She stirs beside me; her head rolling over her auburn hair fanned out behind her. She is growing it again, much to my delight, for I love her hair. I love her eyes, and her smile. I love all of my Kathryn. In my eyes, she is perfection.
I idly stroke her hair, feeling each silken strand brush against my fingers. I run my hands through it when we are both awake, cherishing the fact that I can do it, and that we are together. Nothing else matters when I am with her, for she is she centre of my universe. I would follow her anywhere, do anything for her. I would kill and I would die for my Kathryn. In the Delta Quadrant, we have to celebrate each day as it comes, for many dangers prey on a lonely starship. Each day could be our last, yet all on board have faith in their captain. Their trust is unwavering, Maquis and Starfleet alike. They would do anything for their captain. And that is why I am different from them. My duty as first officer is to follow my captain's orders, and I do. I am different because I would do anything for Kathryn, whom is a different person from the captain she is day to day. We fit together on so many levels. Captain and commander. Kathryn and Chakotay. Man and woman.
Yet sex is not what a relationship is formed on. We share a bond stronger than physical intimacy. Our souls are intertwined; our emotional needs stronger than our physical. Our link was formed long before we became lovers. A strong friendship laid the foundation and the relationship we build upon it is strong. Strong enough to last an eternity or more.
I can never tell her how much I love her. Words alone are not enough. My love for her runs too deep for me to convey all my feelings to her. She will never know how she brightens up my day, just by being there. She is my strength, my love. The Betazoids have a word for what we are. Imzadi. It literally means 'the first.' Not the first to touch bodies, but too touch the soul. Eyes are windows into the soul, and we have not only bared our souls to each other, but healed each other's souls in times of need
We are two, yet we are one. Eternally.
