"Would you like to dance?" A smiling face asked
"No, that's all right, but thankyou anyways." Lina said as politely as she could.
The young man walked away and disappeared into the crowd. Lina was alone; none of the guys had asked her to dance. Gourry had asked Sylphiel, Zel had asked Amelia (as she knew would happen) and Xelloss wasn't even there. She let out a sigh as she traced her eyes over the crowd hoping to see someone she knew. She just wished that this Valentines Day dance would end. Originally, she had wanted the night to never end, but that was before she learned that she had no partner. Tears welled in her eyes as she thought about the carefully picked dress that she had bought for this very occasion, and how it would never be danced in. She was almost ready to burst into tears.
"Madam, would you care to dance?" a soft voice behind her whispered
Lina prepared herself to shoo away another young man seeking to dance with her and turned around. There, standing in a nice tuxedo was Xelloss, holding a beautiful light red rose.
"What're YOU doing here?!" she said trying to sound anything but happy.
"Now THAT's a secret!" he said cheerfully
"I should have known better than to ask YOU that, Xelloss." Lina grumbled
Lina took hold of the rose and twirled it around in her fingers, not exactly sure of what to do next. She glanced her eyes upward at Xelloss, and to her surprise, he was looking down at her with his eyes open, but smiling. Not a fake smile even, a real, honest to gosh, sincere smile.
"Do you want something Xelloss?" she said with very obvious hope in her voice
"You still haven't answered me." He answered, maintaining his gaze
"What question?"
"Would you care to dance?"
"Yes, I would, very much." Lina answered quietly
Xelloss took her hand in his and guided her towards the dance floor, where a waltz was in process. Lina blushed at how close she was to Xelloss as they danced. She was amazed to learn that she was all right at dancing, either that or Xelloss was very good, and she felt comfortable in his arms. The waltz ended and the music switched to a slow romantic tune that eased it's way out of the instruments that played it. She found herself feeling the need to put her head on Xellos's chest, but tried to ignore it. After a few minutes however, she gave in and laid her head down on him.
Xelloss smiled as Lina started growing more comfortable, and getting closer to him. He opened his eyes and a single tear of happiness flowed down his cheek, unseen by Lina.
As the night pressed on, Lina felt more comfortable around Xelloss and enjoyed the evening. Soon, the Valentine's day festivities ended and it was time to go back to the inn.
Lina broke her hand away from Xellos's and whispered "Thankyou Xelloss" and started to turn away when he grabbed her hand gently and brought it to his lips and kissed it. She turned, tears welling into her eyes and hugged Xelloss as tightly as she could.
As she broke the hug he whispered "Will you be my Valentine, Lina Inverse?"
Lina smiled up at him and nodded.
"Yes, Xelloss-san, I will." she spoke softly as she kissed him lightly.
"I will."
