My name is Rachel. That's right. You certainly remember me, don't
you? What's that, you say I died? No. No, unfortunately. I didn't. Well, I'm
Rachel, and I liked to kick butt, and I liked to fight, and... And then you
see how bad it is.
My best friend was more than willing to die for me. And that she did.
In my "last moments" I was talking to the Elimist. I remember it now, and
will for the rest of my life.
"You."
"Yes."
"Who are you? Who are you to play games with us? You appear, you disappear,
you use us, who are you, and what are you?"
He told me all about he and his race.
"Answer this, Ellimist: Did I...did I make a difference? My life, and my...
my death...was it worth it? Did my life really matter?"
"Yes. You were brave. You were strong. You were good. You mattered."
"Yeah. Okay, then. Okay, then."
I wondered if he was right. I got myself ready, and then...
"I can save you."
"But...You said you couldn't!"
"Your friend Cassie. She has offered to take your place."
At first I was definately against it. But then... All the pain I'd cause
Cassie, Jake, Tobias...
"All right."
I felt myself, not my body, but me, moving, fast... and then...
I was Cassie. I sat there, watching everyone mourn me. I mourned Cassie.
I decided not to tell them, not yet, not now...
I saw "Rachel"'s funeral, and cried at the loss of my best friend. I
wondered where she found the courage to give herself up for me. Maybe
it was there all along.
I wrote a book, still posing as Cassie. I think I was too scared to come
out of the shell, to tell them I'm still here and it was Cassie they lost.
I hadn't seen Tobias for a year. He was the one, if anyone, to tell.
Jake thought that I, 'Cassie', didn't love him anymore or something. I knew
that my friend would have always loved him, before, after, or during the war.
Author's Note: Yes, I know all my stories are too short. Review them and they
may get a little longer! ^_~
