The world narrows down to my gun and him. He is kneeling in front of me on the pavement. He was laughing at me earlier when he said that I wouldn't do it. He still doesn't believe that I will shoot him down like the dog that he is. Even when the barrel of my gun is pressed into the back of his skull. I pull the trigger, and he falls forward, his head hitting the pavement. I throw the gun into the harbor and go home to pack for my sabbatical. Luke Ryland is dead. Tim Bayliss, homicide cop and all good guy all around is dead. The Tim Bayliss who walked into homicide seven years ago, full of ambition to make this world a better place is dead. Tim Bayliss, the jaded, shell of a man who walked into homicide seven years ago is alive.
