"... you would be on the council."
Qui-Gon glanced at Obi-Wan for a moment, then looked out on the cityscape as his apprentice grew quiet. The last moments of day bathed the builings in yellow and orange light as the sky itself became stained with a red that slowly faded to purple. Qui-Gon paused, biting back the retort he had readied for his padawan, and followed the path of one of the beams of light. The sunset always seemed to pass too quickly on Coruscant. All the warmest colors of light, from pale yellow to brilliant crimson, had transformed the city planet into a golden world, as near to perfect as Qui- Gon could imagine. But that beauty, those few evanescent seconds of perfection, was too much for human senses to perceive in such a short period of time. Perhaps sunset lasted just as long on other planets; perhaps the rest of the galaxy yearned for a few more minutes before evening, for just a little more of that simple peace and perfection. Perhaps everyone who came home wished they could stand a little longer in the golden light before darkness came.
An air taxi slid past the transparisteel window, blanking out one of the rays of sunlight. Qui-Gon followed the small vehicle with his eyes, then shifted his gaze to the sunbeam as it fell across Obi-Wan's shoulder. The light cast a warmth over his skin and pricked out the red in his hair. There would never be enough time to teach his padawan about the subtle beauty of the sunset; it would take a lifetime to teach, and a lifetime to learn. Even if Qui-Gon pointed it out now, even if there was not tension between the two of them, even if they had come back to the Temple to stay and live out the rest of their lives together, the sun would set too soon. Already the errant beam of light crept over Obi-Wan's shoulder, and when the young man turned slightly, it caught the blue-green of his eyes.
An image flashed through his mind, of perfection and love and what the last glimmer of light could hold for him. He saw Obi-Wan and all the light and love that summed up a galaxy's worth of sunsets.
With that spark of light, Qui-Gon reached out and placed his hand where the sunbeam had been. He pulled Obi-Wan closer and held the image in his mind, of Obi-Wan laughing, sunlight glancing off his bare skin and love making the light in his eyes as perfect as the last light of day. Someday Obi-Wan would learn how to take in all this perfection, someday Obi-Wan would know. Not today, though.
The sun sets too quickly, the sky grows dark too fast, Qui-Gon thought, and squeezed Obi-Wan's shoulder.
"You have a lot to learn, my young apprentice." Qui-Gon murmured and let Obi-Wan stand nearer to him.
